The man's won his championships and is ready to fade into the sunset, playing for the love of, and obsession with 'cause Crosby, by all accounts, is a nut, the game for so long as he is able while living in the city to which he's become accustomed. I don't think that more cups really matter to him more than comfort and familiarity at this stage.

At this point all I really hope is that Sid gets to play in another playoff series. I don't see the Pens truly contending again while he is still playing, but a playoff berth in his last season - presuming he's done after 26-27 - would be nice. Time will tell.

It's hardly a surprise at this point. Sid has quite literally accomplished everything you could possibly ever hope for at the NHL level. He doesn't need to chase a cup before retirement. He has three already.

While may be a little frustrating for some Pens fans, I think it's pretty awesome one of the best players to ever play the sport will likely do so wearing one jersey his whole career.

Another cup doesn't really move the needle on his legacy, even if it would be cool to see as a fan. Very few players spend their entire career in one sweater, Sid is lucky enough he doesn't have to compromise on that to chase glory.

Outside of inventing a time machine to avoid the Steckel/Hedman hits there's really nothing Sid can do to break into the Gretz/Mario/Orr/Howe tier of hockey history.

A 4th cup really won't change his legacy or peoples opinions of him IMO. He is who he is at this point.
People saying this are kidding themselves as most people and sometimes wrongly place a huge emphasis on winning championships.

Case in point will be the thread about McDavid if he fails to win a SC this year again or if (insert superstar here) wins another sC how much his legacy will grow.

There’s a decent chance he retires #2 all-time in scoring. To say that wouldn't put him in that tier is ridiculous.

Well, there's always a chance they get the odd 2 unexpectedly good draft picks (as in the player, not the draft spot), and maybe trade for a good enough goalie + maybe a big name 30mins D-man. You never know.
There is a saying, in order to predict the future, you have to look at the past. There is not one Stanley cup winning team in the cap era where the core of the team was in their mid 30’s. Detroit had a 37 yr old lidstrom but he was with a prime Datsyuk and Zetterberg. An older hossa on the hawks but Toews, Kane, Keith were all in their prime.

I think it's more about the players rather than age directly. Crosby is still above PPG, and Rust & Rakell close to, so perhaps with Malkin & Karlsson traded for possibly one big-name prime D-man (as Pens already have 3 PPG-ish forwards), that leaves just a goalie. And with the cap growing next year, they could sign someone decent (Adin Hill?), and add some decent 2nd/3rd liners/pairs for a fair chance in 2025-26, if Crosby can still stay at PPG. Maybe a hungry young winger (someone like Guentzel, cough) to join him?

What I am telling you is not an opinion, it’s fact. Literally look at every year cup winning roster in the cap era, the core of the best players on each team was mostly in their prime. This isn’t something I’m making up, this is actual fact. I’m unsure how you can refute actual fact. So what you’re saying, the Pittsburgh penguins will be the first cup team in the cap era to win a cup with the mayor ity of their core in their mid 30’s. The pens have missed the playoffs the last 2 years and will miss this year. They are not even in a playoff spot. I’m curious, what makes you think the pens will win a cup? Because Crosby is a ppg? Just brutal take

Perhaps the core will change around Crosby. Everything Dubas has said and done since the Guentzel trade suggests this.

There are no guarantees. But there's also no reason the Pens couldn't make the playoffs again with Crosby if he's still playing at an elite level and the surrounding cast is filled out well. And once you're in, anything can happen.

Depends on circumstances opf said cup of course.

Does Canada win Gold with Crosby as MVP, and Crosby go back motivated and helps Penguins make playoffs this year, and surprise as a wildcard by winning the cup and him a 3rd conn smythe at age 37? If a scenario like that unfoldfed, it would do wonders for his legacy.

But yes - if he joins another team via trade....say Colorado....and they win a cup, and Crosby does well but is at best the ~3rd or 4th best player on team (behind Mackinnon and Makar), it helps his legacy a bit (a cup always does), but doesn't really move the needle much.

No reason for him to go anywhere else. I think he wants to be a player who would rather keep trying to win with the same franchise than go into "Corey Perry Mode" going from team to team trying to win another Cup.
In Perry's defense he was bought out by the Ducks, so had no obligation to or loyalty to any one team after that.

What I meant was it wouldn't all of a sudden make the big four a big five, as impressive as that would be. He'd still be ranked 5-8 all time depending on the person.

Even if he did want to leave for another shot at the Cup, he's not going to say anything in a press conference while he's playing for the national team.

His legacy is already written and there’s nothing else he “needs” to accomplish. Hell even another Cup might add nothing to his legacy.

The question though is - does Sid really not care about making the playoffs over his last 4-5 seasons? What about not winning a playoff round over his last 8+ seasons?

So, I'm sure, based on what I know/heard about him, he's probably dying inside by being out of the playoffs....he's one of the most competitive guys out there. That said, would he want to go to another team just to get there? Wouldn't that seem like he's hitching a ride with someone, rather than taking "his team" to the playoffs?

I like the idea of guys playing with a single team their entire careers. As someone suggested, he already has 3 Cups, so you aren't looking at a Ray Bourque situation here. I doubt he evens thinks about legacy at all, but even if he did, winning another Cup, like others suggested, probably doesn't move the needle a heck of a lot. Moving up the all-time scoring list is not going to really do anything. He's already way past Orr and will pass Mario next year. That simple movement in stats isn't going to move him up a rankings list. If someone has him behind them now, would make no sense to move him ahead next year, regardless what happens. I say "if" because everyone's rankings are subjective and I don't want to assume anything for everyone. Same goes for Howe....he may or may not pass Howe as an all-time scorer, but that won't impact how people rank him.
