This is dumb. What if the Pens were in the tight playoff race and needed every point they can get. Bush League IMO.

I love some of the logic in this thread. "If he plays on Wednesday, he was obviously faking an injury and just didn't want to go". Yes, not being able to play on day 4 of a week long recovery period means he won't be able to play on day 8. Flawless logic.

Anyway, why is this a thread? Everyone knew this already, the Pens specifically said he was going to miss the first game due to missing the all star game. I think it's a dumb rule because I think the all star game is dumb, but the rule is completely understandable.

If he's well enough to play a game on Wednesday, then surely he could step on the ice for the skills competition and juggle the puck around.

He could've done the creative shootout thing or even the saucer pass challenge.

It's very suspicious.

It's 2 contact sport games played with the most minimum contact possible. If anything, the NFL has a better case for forcing players to show up since its in the off-season for 90% of the league.

If Crosby thought he would be able to play tomorrow he would have made the drive to Columbus to shake hands and take pictures with the league sponsor's big wigs.

"2 contact sport games" both heaps undue praise on the NHL and slams the NFL. Post-game fatigue from hockey is normally muscular (which recovers quickly), from football is everything. NFL teams have the day after a game completely off, and the next day is usually light as well. It's not for any other reason than to allow the players to recover from the physical pounding that they take on Sundays. Most guys don't feel close to normal until Wednesday, three days after a game, and by the end of a season it's usually Thursday. Those are for the players who are healthy and can still go full-out in practice and in games.

What about Malkin?

He was put on IR and like Crosby did not practice today (I think it was seen as soon as last week neither would play Tuesday suspension or not). Also:

Coach Johnston on Malkin’s health: "Geno, until he skates, we won’t know. I don’t expect he will skate in the next few days."

What about Malkin?

He already missed a game before ASG, and is still described by his team as out indefinitely.

If a player has already missed game before ASG due to injury, then I think the presumption is that the injury is real, and there's no need for league to mandate anything.

Not that 87's injury isn't real, but the rule is in place to dissuade players from skipping ASG just to get rest, with the idea being that if you also have to miss one reg-season game, that will discourage the practice.

the games biggest star thinks he should not have to represent the league at a marquee event
he's lucky it's only 1 game

Then maybe Crosby should have gone to the ASG. He knew the consequences.

I would like to thank the NHL for telling me that I should not waste money on buying tickets for game after all-star game just in case.

It's a meaningless event that not many people watch or care about

Just because you claim something doesn't mean it's true. Plenty of people watched and cared about the All-Star Weekend. It's not your cup of tea. Fine. Doesn't mean it doesn't mean a lot to the city that hosts it, the fans, and the players.

Except it isn't meaningless to the suits from the corporations that sponsor the NHL and by extension the teams and the players.

All Star is a corporate event, as an employee of the NHL players are expected to do their part.

Sidney Crosby is not an employee of the NHL. He is employed by the Pittsburgh Penguins and his main job should be to help that franchise.

Nice of the Pittsburgh Penguins to let all of these other teams play in their league.

You do realize the uproar about Pronger earlier, right? That's because he is currently holding two jobs. One is a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers and the other is working for the NHL safety department.

It's fair. The punishment was obviously worth the extra time off for Crosby, so I don't see much of a problem either way. It's just one regular season game.

You're ignoring the fact that he didn't practice today and wasn't allowed to practice due to the injection. If he would have been at practice today, you might have a point.

Of course it's fair. They did it to Lidstrom and Datsyuk so the only way to be fair is to do it to Crosby as well. Whether or not it should happen at all is another question.

I hope he keeps missing the All Star games. I'd hate to see him injured on some sort of freak play.
