Look it up on your own the NHL Has hitched it wagon to Crosby if I were Crosby id purposely put that wagon in the ditch now the NHL Would never use my name again if I were Crosby and if they did use it to sell the game and league id find media that hated the league like ESPN or someone and crap all over the league they think twice 100 times before they used my name again if Crosby were smart hed do the same

(mod)

Bottom line - the NHLPA gets 50% of HRR, so they should be incented to do everything possible to grow the game.

I think that everyone knows that the NHL ASG is a joke, so they had to do something like this to keep the players invited who weren't genuinely hurt to avoid playing the "injury card" and having an extra 4-5 days off. I think that the NHL solution is perfectly reasonable. If you're not healthy enough to play on Sunday, and extra day (or two if your team doesn't play on Tuesday) off can't hurt.

It's amazing how important the All Star game has become around here.

Holy ****.

It seems like it was just last week that the ASG was a complete joke...

It's important to the NHL because it generates revenue which pays the players salaries.

Therefore they need to show up when called upon. Pretty simple really.

AFAIK - everyone understands that the ASG is a joke. The issue is that it is a league event, and is good for the kids and advertisers (and hence the league, and the NHLPA). That being the case, it's important that the invited players attend if possible. Every hockey player would rather have an extra 5-6 days off rather than play in the ASG, but they make the sacrifice for the good of the league (and the NHLPA). I think that the rule put in place is very reasonable and the only real way to dis-incent everyone from "being injured" over the ASG weekend.

Valid username.

He skipped the game, and now he's being punished. The same thing would happen with any other player in the league. Why is this hard to understand? If he was going to miss this game because of injury anyways why does it matter if he was suspended?

Here is the roster from the 1996 All Star Game. Gretzky, Lindros, Lemieux, Jagr, Hasek all were able to make it including a ton of other future HHOFers who I'm sure were nursing some bumps and bruises. Unless Crosby is seriously injured he has a responsibility to take part in these things due to his status of being one of (if not the) face of the NHL.

Well, were they?

Also, it doesn't say in his contract you MUST attend the ASG. That's why there is a suspension for people who chose not to.

Did those injections prevent him from hanging around Columbus while the event was going on? He is the face of hockey and earns millions in endorsements because of this status. It is his responsibility to be a part of this even whether you like it or not. It's one thing to miss the game but to not show up at all is a farce.

He makes millions in endorsements because he is the best hockey player in the World. He knew he was not going to play the game after the break so he didn't go to the media events and took the one game suspension. It's not a big deal.

He doesn't need the league for anything he has guaranteed 12 yr contract worth over 100 000 000 that no one can take away from him without the league and media he would be just fine

Yeah and if he did that the league would suspend him under the conduct rules and he'd get nothing not to mention no more endorsements.

It's not a big deal to you but for the younger fans and the people in Columbus who attended the game it is a big deal. For the best hockey player in the world to only attend a single All-Star Game in 10 years is comical. And of course Penguins fans don't give a damn but the All-Star Game is meant to be an event for everyone, especially the younger generation of fans who will eventually be helping to pay his salary by purchasing tickets and merchandise.

He does so much for the fans and he has only been to 1 all star game for a reason. Basically you are just another Helen Lovejoy who's argument amounts to:

It doesn't.

That dude doesn't represent Penguins fans. I've never seen him before. He's embarrassing us.

it's the ASG, relax... the vast majority of the fans in here are mocking the ASG every time it comes around...

And this time he needed to recover from an injury. Why is this so difficult to understand?

The fact the he has in the past participated in off-ice activities should show a willingness to do so if able.

It is extremely obvious that people are just looking for things to complain about, and that's ignoring the people who are convincing themselves that the injury itself was a ruse to get out of the ASG -- this despite the additional ineligibility for one regular season game. It's really not rocket science.

Yikes I didn't realize Penguins fans were so sensitive. If you don't understand why people want the best player in the league at the All Star Game more than once a decade then you'll never get it I suppose.

If you don't understand that the reasons he has only been to 1 all star game in 10 years are perfectly legitimate and beyond his control then you'll never get it I suppose.

Yes some of those have been legitimate reasons but like it or not the optics of not having the best player in the All-Star Game year after year are negative for the league, the player and the team that employs him. And I still haven't seen anything close to a legitimate reason for him not attending the event this year like Tyler Johnson did. Give me a solid answer for that and I will shut up.

Alright, I think we've explored all of the points to be made and have now descended into the territory of personal shots.

Crosby chose to forego the weekend all-star activities and, as a result, is required to sit out the game tonight against the Jets whether he's recovered from an injury or not. Unless something more develops, I think we're done here.
