I don't get it, do all Leafs coaches have M&M syndrome?

Let's get on Willy's case, which is fairish, but TOTALLY ignore M&M stinking up the joint? I've always felt like the Leafs org coddled those two more than anyone else.

2 goals from Marner? Matthews isn't even PPG?

Shouldn't that result in benching or minutes demotion, or PP2?

Hell, if Pasta can play some PP2 when he sucks get M&M off the powerplay until they improve in 5 on 5.

From what we can tell, Willie responds better to hard coaching, whereas the other two don't do well when the heat is turned up from the coach.

This. So much this!!
Exactly.

The point of paying these guys so much money is so they can make players around them better i.e like how McDavid turned a 50 point Hyman into an 80 point first line winger…

Matthews could do something similar for Domi or Marner could help Tavares get back to 70-80 points, this is how we can get surplus value. They won’t do that at the level of McDavid but Matthews could probably get Domi to 65 points.

If Matthews and Marner have similar or the same stats playing together they should not be together since they can enhance other players on the team by playing them separately.

Ignoring last season since it was an outlier, Hyman’s even strength scoring hasn’t really changed that much with McDavid, the extra 20 points are because he went from 0 powerplay time in TO to first unit on the best powerplay in the last decade (and he stayed healthy for once). You could keep playing Domi away from Matthews and get him to near career highs just by feeding him PP1 minutes assuming it stops being a disaster.

13 games in now, .538 P%. Can't honestly say I'm that wowed by Berube, he definitely hasn't unlocked some hidden potential from the team that Keefe was allegedly holding back.

Jan 1, we are under .500, who replaces Berube?
AM us under programing
Domi is under performing,
PP is terrible, PK is not much better.
Cannot blame goalies. Cannot blame Tre's new defencemen,
Goals are down, toughness is not on display.
Berube must go. At this pace I would make a change long before Xmas.

If you start a "Fire Berube" thread right now I bet it would be popular.

I honestly don't think the coach matters in Nylander's case. He just does his thing, which is why he's been the best of the three in the playoffs most years.

As for the other two, well, one could say Marner hasn't looked right at all, and Matthews has been not quite as awkward as Mitch but pretty subpar.

Record wise they’re exactly what most outside of the Leafs marketing department expected them to be.

While harsh, it's going to become a topic.

The real issue is that Treliving shouldn't have been hired.
when it was obvious he was all that was available they should have waited.

Wish he could split up Marner and Matthews for a bit to try to get some scoring from a third line but their playing together is obviously being dictated from above or in their contacts.
I think he's got to let Matthews get his offensive game back together first and lay off a little on the dzone starts and pk.
I wish they could put Domi on his wing to get him going and maybe Knies could get a 3rd line going but they're paper thin at center, they never addressed that and it's showing.

I have always thought Berube to be an overrated coach based on his overall record. While he certainly has a Cup and we shouldn't dismiss that, outside of that half a year in charge, his record is meh.

Having said that, it's 13 games. We can't pretend that's enough time to assess him.
