Part of having great xGA is being excellent at xGF 5v5 and xGF% in general.

The Canadiens are Actually Good.

On stattrick you want to look at on ice 5v5 xGF% rates for guys that actually get put out for dzone faceoffs.

Oleksiak immediately pops out as the best to fit this mold. Jon Merrill. Adam Larsson. Martinez.

You would want to avoid absolutely pure defenders like Scandella/Hjalmarsson types.

Of the 170 guys that played 500 or more minutes 5v5, OEL had the fourth worst xGF%.

Martinez and Forbort are two players I would like to consider bringing in. Forbort would be an above average 5/6 pairing and could give a solid 18-20 minutes. Maybe a 2nd pairing type, but I think he would do a lot to help the PK.

Watching the conference finals and it's obvious that players like Nelson/Kilorn/J. Anderson/Tofoli are so important. We don't have any top 6 wingers who can go to the net and throw their weight around. Who in UFA fits this bill?
The final 4 teams all have multiple players that go to the net, some better than others and some using speed and some using physicality. We have 3 and that's a big problem. Not only do we only have 3 but one of them is Chychrun. Palmieri and Nosek would be solid adds to help resolve that issue. Nosek is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I really, really, really, really want to sign him and Goodrow.

If we move OEL and have the available cash, I would LOVE to get Martinez on a 2 year deal. 2 years, $12m. I just don't know how feasible it is with our forward group being what it is and needing to add 4 more defenseman on top of Martinez.

He had a good season and a disappointing half season where he was traded to us I believe.

---

I still like Schmaltz but he's a 2nd line center (3rd if you want a high offense 3rd line). I think he definitely requires teammates that elevate him, not the other way around. I'm totally cool keeping him if we can add a legit 1st/2nd line center to go along with Dvorak and Schmaltz. Doesn't even have to a an elite #1, just a steady 55+ point guy that brings a bit of an edge to his game (McTavish potentially).
Schmaltz is not a full time C. He can fill in here and there but not full time. Shows how weak our C's are.

I disagree, he's looked so much better a C than RW. He's just a mid to low end 2c and that's fine with me. If Hayton and Jenik are playing well enough in 2 years, I move him but I'm perfectly happy with him at this point. In fact, Bunting - Schmaltz - Garland is a pretty wicked 2nd line. If we could get a sniper/power forward to play with Keller and Dvorak, I'd be pretty happy with our top 6. Won't win us any cups but its decent. Add a 3rd line with similar properties to the first 2 and we have a super solid group. Our 4th line is already great at shutting down the opposition, RT just wouldn't keep them together because he's a fool.

Landeskog is about the only UFA power forward that would be an obvious improvement over Crouse/Pitlick.

I'd be happy to nab Landeskog if playoffs is the goal but it kinda seems like Shane Wright is the goal.

Landeskog's UFA deal will probably be as ugly as Oliver's deal. I hope we don't.

Anyone have any insights on Zadorov? Seems like a buy low candidate that we should be in on. Does he want a bunch more money than he's worth? Any off ice issues? Tough to like in the locker room? He's on his 3rd team and if I recall, Chicago was looking at moving him this last TDL. Would seem like he's the issue but I just don't know.

I’d love Zadorov. Saw a clip where he leveled a guy and said “touch my goalie again and see what happens”

Meanwhile current Coyotes players say “could you please not do that?”

$6 M AAV seems like a lot for a 33 yo D. I think we could get Forbort for 1 yr at $1.1-1.3 M. Martinez, I would give 3 yrs, $14.75 M total, front-loaded. $5.25, $5.0, and $4.5 M. He may get more than that AAV, but anything with a 6 scares me. If AAV starts with a 5, it can't be above $5.5 M, at most.

2 years is so short, and our window is still so far away that I don't mind. I just want to see this team go 5-7 years making it into the playoffs and then winning a round in at least 2-3 of them. I'm totally good with your AAV and salary structure, just worry we may need to pay more to secure a very solid 2nd pairing guy.

Dumb player with all the skills you'd want that doesn't actually use them consistently, makes mistakes at the worst possible time, and takes a bunch of penalties.

The play that eliminated the Avs vs Dallas sums it up:

I think you can have one of these types on the team at most, on the third pair.

Arizona needs one big and stupid guy. If it’s Zadorov I’d love it. Staple him on a third pairing and you’re set

It's one of those "I'd take it for free but I'm not giving up any assets for it" situations. He's not a piece you build around and there's a dozen+ better FA options.

for sure. Wouldn’t pay a whole lot to get him, but if it’s damn near free I don’t hesitate.

So Kadri screws up, covers no one and you blame Zadorov.

How in hell do you blame Zadorov? Or is it part of your analytics.:sarcasm:
