I mean, if a house that's six houses down from you is on fire, you'd probably step outside and take a look at what's going on, instead of denying nothing serious is happening. And you'd probably start thinking about scenarios, what if the fire spreads over.

That's fair but you don't want to go crazy before the fire gets there.

People who are of the opinion that this hype train is overblown are entitled to that opinion. It doesn't mean they are misrepresenting facts. There is plenty of unnecessary panic. All paper products are sold out in most stores. My daughter can't get baby wipes for her 2 month old because people are hoarding them. Is this a normal reaction?

I think there's an irrational idea by some of these people that if you think there's more panic than needed you're walking around coughing and sneezing on people and licking lamp posts. It's f***ing preposterous.

I think so too. I ran some errands today, did what I had to do, came home and washed my hands. Pretty common sense stuff.

5,619/150,649 is 3.7%.

I guess that's going by the closed cases.

No, that's going by closed and active cases/deaths, conveniently ignoring the 8% in serious or critical condition on the active cases.

~7% as of now is correct. Again, nothing really concerning unless your +50 and in quite bad shape and/or living in a shit hole.

I live at home with my parents who are life long smokers and 50+, so that's what I'm concerned not myself. And I don't have a fever but my eyes are a bit sore and feel like I have a slight cold now. Once again, not worried about myself I don't want to transmit it to my parents.

I can kinda relate a lot to that. Lotta old folk in my family, but I think they are tough.

You have the right attitude, keep an eye on your temperature.

ps: wait, you're an active case?

Exactly. My parents and my in laws are all around 70. My wife and I are much more concerned about them (and the prospects of us transmitting to anyone elderly or in poor health) than we are about ourselves.

I have no idea, but I do feel eye soreness, but I have no fever. I also once in a while feel short of breath.

Latest numbers from CDC concerning 2019-2020 flu season in US:

36 million cases
370,000 people hospitalized
22,000 deaths

Media didn't seem to care much. No panic, no run on essentials in grocery stores, no states of emergency, no businesses or schools closed, no catastrophic economic impacts...

Given the reported 3% fatality rate of corona virus, if the same number of people caught corona as did the flu, you'd be looking at over 1 million deaths, as opposed to 22,000.

Exactly. Same situation here. People keep repeating that if your under 50 you’ve got nothing to worry about, as if nobody has parents or loved ones that they can infect by exposure.

I cannot tell you the actual death rate. No one can. It’s possible that we will never know the true death rate.

I can tell you that of confirmed and closed cases (recovered or dead) the global death rate is ~7%. This is a bad virus and treating it like a media conspiracy, just the flu, or whatever other nonsense has been spreading around is a dangerous mindset.

Not accurate. The death rate in Italy is around 7% because they have an elderly population, especially in the north. According to the WHO the current estimated global death rate is 2-3%.

Again, there is an entire first half of that sentence that people keep not reading

There have been 156,000 official cases reported worldwide with 5800 deaths. Do you really think there are going to be 36 million cases in US?

The number of cases in the US is widely known to be MUCH more than what has been reported. That’s the issue.

Also, people aren’t accounting for the deaths of people who require ICU treatment for other issues who won’t be able to if this gets as bad as Italy. There won’t be enough beds or equipment to treat people. That’s not someone dying from the virus but is a direct effect.

One hopeful silver lining from this is that we will hopefully emerge better prepared for a future pandemic with a much higher fatality rate.
