He seems to still think this is a media concocted panic as opposed to a legitimate threat from a novel virus that global governments are woefully unprepared to react to.

It's both and the media hasn't helped with the panic. They have caused it. It's ridiculous that you can't find toilet paper and other products anywhere. It's absurd. The flu and pneumonia kill thousands every year yet that seems to be no big deal but 50 people have died in the US so lets plan for the apocalypse.

Or because the heat will help kill the virus faster making it difficult to spread. But we'll ignore that.

This is incredibly irresponsible and if you had taken even one second to research this, you would realize what you're spewing is trash.

First off, heat does not 'kill' the virus. The reason viruses spread less during warmer seasons is because people are less likely to be confined in small spaces. Moreover, people's immune systems generally gain strength due to their buildup of vitamin D + melatonin levels, although this is less scientifically proven. Finally, scientists have not determined yet the impact of heat on the virus. So what you are spewing is just an opinion, largely grounded in false rhetoric and assumptions.

Regardless, even if the virus takes a break in the summer season, it does not just disappear. And if we don't take action now, it will 100% return in the fall to wreak more havoc.

And no, for those comparing this to the flu, it is not even remotely close to that. With generous estimates, it carries a death rate nearly ten times higher. There are also reports that it may leave those who contract it with a decreased lung capacity. We don't know the rest of the long term impacts, but this is something we should all be highly concerned about.

I agree that the reactions people are having are panic driven and hopefully way overboard, but to continue to compare this to the flu demonstrates a continued lack of understanding. This is a much, much worse problem than the flu.

You're right, the flu kills thousands every year, because tens of millions of people get it. Do you know what the means for a virus that has ten times the death rate should it continue to spread at the rate it has been? It means we are looking at hundreds of thousands, if not over a million deaths, should this thing not be prevented from spreading.

It's insanely ignorant to compare this virus to the flu. Maybe you should stop complaining about the media and actually read some of the stuff they are spouting to educate yourself.

This virus is serious but it is not the black plague as the media would have you believe. There are people walking around that are infected who don't even know it because they have no symptoms. People need to stop with the bullshit that this is some sort of death sentence if you happen to contract it. Many people like Tom Hanks and his wife tested positive and are perfectly fine. Stop the hysteria.

I agree with you to some point, but it's also that this is a novel virus that we know a lot less about than the flu virus, and also the number of new positives is on a parabolic trajectory. It's a lot more contagious and its potential is serious, and getting in front of it is the right thing to do.

I'm guessing you are pretty young, as am I. And you're right, this virus, for us, isn't a huge deal. But it is incredibly dangerous for older inviduals, many of whom will die, if we continue to be ignorant and operate without abandon.

Tom Hanks is one of the richest people on earth who has access to some of the best medical resources on earth. It's absurd you're using him as an example. Give me a break.

Aside from the media, is there any hysteria? People are just saying wash your hands and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Unless you think that's people spreading hysteria.

Are you an expert on the matter? I have read reports that say the death rate is below 1% and could be lower than many think because we just don't know how many people are actually infected. I don't claim to be an expert like yourself but I tell it the way I see it. The hysteria is absurd and the media feeds on the frenzy. I really don't care what you think.

Also read about mob psychology. It doesn't take much to trigger it. If one person is seen bulk buying and hoarding, people will quickly follow.

The fact that you can walk around with it and have no symptoms is precisely why it is so dangerous. That is how the disease is spreading so effectively. While it might not be a death sentence for you, emphasis on might, it will certainly be a death sentence for a non trivial number of people to whom you pass it on. You have a responsibility to society to think of other people than yourself.

Last note from me in here for awhile, I highly recommend abandoning cable news and Facebook entirely. You have direct access to the CDC, WHO and top academic institutions like Johns Hopkins thru the web. Get your info directly from those sources. Unless of course you think they are directly compromised as well and hyping this for some sort of gain. If that’s you, I just don’t know what to say to you.

Are you joking? Have you gone into a grocery store lately? Dutchess county has 1 confirmed case of somebody testing positive and they declare a state of emergency and all schools in the entire county are closed for 2 weeks. It's crazy.

Number of new cases in NYS jumped 30% over night. That's just a factual statistic. The media reports it. The media never said go out and grab anything you can grab.

I think the media hypes everything for their own gain. Bad news sells. Thats not even debatable. My point is that people feel if they unfortunately contract this virus that they are going to die which is far from the truth. Im not saying there aren't legitimate health concerns but some of this is just way over the top and the economic fallout is going to be disastrous.

If you really believe that the media doesn't play a major part in creating hysteria than more power to ya. I watched 30 minutes of world news on ABC tonight and I wanted to reach for the cyanide.

My mother is 60 and has respiratory issues. This virus could easily threaten her life. How can you sit there and say it wont kill you? You can infect an elderly person and essentially kill them...

I didn't say what you said is not without merit. But also see what has happened in other countries and go back and read the posts of non-US posters in this thread. They're in deeper lockdowns than us.

Dude I'm 60 myself and not the least bit worried and it's my age group that is most at risk. I never said it couldn't kill you. I just said this is far from the black plague. What is so hard to understand about that?

You're viewing it in an insular way. Look at the numbers on a global scale. Numbers that have occurred in a matter of weeks and months.

Bad news sells, absolutely. I hate defending the media but what are they supposed to do? not talk about one of the biggest global events in years? not talk about how governments are handling it? There are rich, modern nations out there closing down pretty much everything and still struggling. Like it or not, that's newsworthy. As is speculating on how your own country is going to handle it, talking to experts and advising people on what to do.

Obviously I don't watch US cable news but none of the mainstream media articles I've read or watched have come even close to comparing this to black plague or saying it's an apocalypse. US media included. I've not talked to a single person who thinks contracting this will be a death sentence. Sure the toilet paper thing is absurd but "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" sounds like a good idea to me.
