It's not that hard to have multiple plans in place depending on which eventuality plays out.

yeah and i'm sure they today are figuring it out...but they couldn't play last night which infected players while they figured it out. and IMO it was smart to say indefinitely, NHL would be dumb to say 2 weeks because you have no idea when it will be ok to resume.

I get the meme that Bettman and the league don't do anything right but I will say I think the NBA is much more suited to withstand an outright cancellation of the season, as opposed to the NHL

So I have no issues with them saying "let's take 2 weeks, and we'll re-evaluate from there"

saying 2 weeks and then we'll re-evaluate instead of just 'we are shutting down until its safe to resume' means that if you don't resume in 2 weeks people we go nuts cause you said it would be 2 weeks...does anyone honestly think this will all go away in 2 weeks? I don't think that resuming in 2 weeks (unless without fans) is even realistic.

Believe me I am not a fan of the idiots who run this league but this situation is a tough one and still unfolding. I think its a wise decision to put the season on hold and then reassess in a few weeks. There are a lot of people and jobs affected by this decision so they just have to be cautious right now.
I get that, and I’m not even saying ‘cancel the entire season,’ two weeks is just a ridiculously short time frame compared to the timelines of everything else that’s getting suspended

I could see that yeah

Although I guess I'm just assuming that people will be rational about it haha. The most likely outcome to me is they decide before the two week is up to suspend indefinitely

But maybe they should just do it right now

If you say up front that you'll reassess in two weeks, people won't go nuts.

Actually, it's a semantics difference anyway. What I'm saying is that they should shut down indefinitely with stated intention of when they're going to reassess and what the plan is if they resume at the reassessment point.

According to Seravalli teams are being asked to secure building availability through July, whixh allows them to suspend for up to 6-7 weeks.

yes I agree. I'm not saying suspend the season for just 2 weeks, I'm seeing suspend the season and then re-evaluate the situation in a few weeks. I just don't think any definite decisions can be made at this time due to the uncertainty of everything.

people shouldn't go nuts but people are dumb...its like when they say allow 3-7 days for shipping and people get mad if its not there in 3...common sense rarely is a factor these days

If the league resumes eventually in a month or whatever, they should play the rest of the season out at that point imo. I don't think they would just use the current standings to start the playoffs. Might be a shortened schedule to get the games in sooner but they'd adjust and manage it. Shorter offseason, probably shorter training camps and a delayed start to next year. Going straight to the playoffs would be a bit anti-climactic, but we'll see. Fewer games is also an option.

You're pushing back the season yeah, but then that would in turn push back the start of next season

Unless as someone mentioned to me earlier, they have less games next year

It would be interesting if they also shortened this season and how they'd work it with teams having played a different number of games.

it depends on how far things get pushed back, but yeah at some point something would need to be done to put the schedule back in sync...

Most of the other countries are taking more drastic measures than the USA. China is in flat out police state mode. Italy's healthcare system is in shambles due to overcrowding.

Is that the fault of all of their respective "Media?"

China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, all the Epidemiologists and infection disease experts just are doing this all for shits and giggles...:sarcasm:

Don't know about the vaccine.

We could definitely beat this thing by the summer if we handle it right.

We have to find that sweet spot between losing our damn minds and being very, very serious and go from there.

The absolute best thing people can do is go f***ing nowhere. Go to work if you need to, go to the store if you need to, and then go home. Stay in your city. That will isolate where it already is.

Man I like your posts in this thread. Why can't you be this sensible when talking about the Rangers :naughty:

Is there anyone that has anything non-apocalyptic to say in this thread? Some positivity will be welcomed.

Relax. Minimize contact with others when you can. If you can't, just follow good hygiene habits. If you are of healthy working age then you will likely be ok even if you do get it. Be vigilant but take it in stride. No reason to go out and get 100 roles of toilet paper or all the cough medicine in the pharmacy. Stay away from sick people and keep distance from elderly and immuno-compromised if you can for their safety.

Listen we have to take it seriously and do what needs to be done, even if it inconveniences us. I love hockey as well as other things but f*** it as if it's my life. It's superfluous stuff in the end. Any minor sacrifices we have to make now, pale in comparison to what others have had to go without in the past.

As others have said. It's not the mortality rate that is solely worrisome. It's the stress that this would put on our health (and economic) system. Italy f***ed up and now this: The Extraordinary Decisions Facing Italian Doctors

We don't want to be there. Only way to do that will be to cap the spread. An EFFECTIVE vaccine is likely 16-24 months away, if one can be produced. Until such a time, isolation and smart practices will help.

We are nowhere near the numbers of the Swine Flu in 2010. I do not recall the panic we hare having now. Nobody was hoarding anything. 12k people died.

Why all the panic now? Are we expecting it to be much worse this time? Or are we over reacting?

As of mid-March 2010, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that about 59 million Americans contracted the H1N1 virus, 265,000 were hospitalized as a result, and 12,000 died.[117] [118]
