I mostly agree with you, but I think it’ll be a gradual reopening rather than a flick of the switch. I think many areas of the country could open fully today.
Oh, I agree. NYC will be a measured response. But yes, there are areas that could probably be completely open today.

The info in that article says Sweden doesn’t *have* 50-60%, they have 20% in Stockholm and are expecting that to get to 60% within weeks.

There is also a lot of talk that they believe a lot of the success that Sweden has seen vs the rest of the world is due to the lack of intergenerational households there. On the other hand they think the opposite was true for Italy soo many intergenerational households led to a lot more deaths.

Which is exactly what I think affects the US the most, the reason that I am home is my parents, both of them are older and have health risks. I stay with them to limit the exposure so I can go shopping etc. That all changes the minute I have to start reporting back into manhattan because then we are talking about NJTransit (who are awful and don't clean), the seventh layer of hell known as the MTA, and of course my favorite virus breeding ground Penn Station the minute one train is delayed and 700 people cram into one room.

Guaranteeing their safety I would go back in tomorrow, even knowing that my former smoking etc even puts me at a higher risk of serious infection. I work for a nonprofit and the fact we cant hold fundraisers and of course other revenue streams have left us with 32 total employees. We used to have 60 FT Employees, 100ish Part Time workers, and now we stand at risk of not being able to get our camps open so there goes another 300 seasonal jobs. Now being that they are still at risk I don't mind being home even though I lost out on going to the Rangers v Flames game, and other personal things (happy hour, dates, etc) but I can understand the argument of needing/wanting to open back up. I know a lot of people struggling right now, I know some that are scared to walk out the door because they don't have insurance. Without a semi-functioning economy that will continue and more and more people will lose jobs because eventually no one will be able to spend.

I listened to the 538 podcast today where they talked with the guy who does the pandemic models for the White House..he said the numbers they had from the beginning were between 60k and like 120k and has been revised down as they get more data. He says he has no idea who did the modeling for the estimates trump has used when making his policies but it’s not them.
I have a 'hunch' I know

You don't necessarily need someone with hands on experience to manage an organization. From what little I've seen about him he's more qualified for the job than Jared Kushner is for any of his roles. The article from Yahoo (and whatever the original source) is a disgrace.

In general, I agree with you. But they are going to have to open up NYC fairly soon. It is just too big a portion of the overall economy. And I am not talking about Wall Street.

Of course things will need to be adapted to deal with this virus. Hospitals may need special Covid wards and other temporary facilities while waiting for effective therapies and a vaccine next year. But however challenging the treatment and worker-protection protocols for Covid, it will have to join the other illness curves the health-care system unavoidably must manage in the next year: the backlog of delayed surgeries, seasonal flu and possibly the return of coronavirus itself in the fall.

Sometime between May 1oth-20th is my. Cuomo knows they can't afford to stay shut down any longer. There will be an abundance of preventative measures taken and there will be a phased approach. It is common sense.

Georgia is starting to reopen. A lot of hair salons, gyms, etc. are taking preventative measures. My office opens May 4th. We are doing a schedule of on days/off days. No meetings/outside visitors allowed. All employees are required to wear masks and gloves while in the building (provided by our employer).

So is this objective or Trump=bad?

I don’t have a clue if this is a good or bad decision but the default “Trump is an idiot” - gets tiring and is insulting.

We're going through a pandemic that has officially killed almost 50,000 people in about a month. Don't you think we should have knowledgeable people running the pandemic task force? There are people who have devoted their entire lives to this kind of study of medicine and pandemics. Harrison is not one of them. To read the article this guy is even referred to dismissively by other Trump apparatchiks in the White House as the 'dog breeder'. He's a joke to some of them even. If that's not a WTF moment I don't know what is. Sooner or later there needs to come a get your f***ing act together moment. Practically everybody even that posts here on the NYRangers forum at HF if faced with handling this kind of challenge would I expect conclude that the leadership of this response team calls for someone with some real expertise in his field and not the friend of a friend of a friend who knows all kinds of politcians with real political clout. But yeah I'll admit I think Trump is an idiot but if it makes you feel better I don't think Biden is all that far behind.

Common sense? Different cultures react differently? Look at the Jewish and Muslim communities in NY... I’m not criticizing anyone. The US is a melting pot. That’s tougher to manage than Norway.
Yeah, this is a f***ing sketchy take and I'm just going to back away and let it speak for itself.

Nothing wrong with @Barnaby's take. We have diversity, but lack of diversity at leadership levels. The policies we implement don't always account for the myriad of socioeconomic, cultural, and religious differences within our population. We also have subsects of our population that are distrustful of what our leaders say because the leaders are not of a certain background, or deem them part of the "ruling class".

If you think "our leaders don't represent minorities and perpetuate systemic racism" is what he meant, I'm Lenny Kravitz.

That’s actually a very fair take and I agree with a lot of your point. Cheers

That is why everyone is saying flatten the curve not stop the curve.
That was the whole point of the lockdown, right? Flatten the curve to avoid the hospital systems from being overrun. Capacity is returning and in some cities never became an issue at all.

I don't know if this has been posted yet but a study done at VA hospitals found that Covid patients whose treatment regimen included the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine died at a much higher rate than those who had a more standard treatment. It looks like that drug is not a go.

As well remdesivir a anti-viral drug produced by the pharma company Gillead Sciences and that the US military bought a very large supply of a couple or so years back looks like it is not a go either. Results of a study for that drug vis-a-vis Covid patients appeared briefly on the World Health Organization website but was quickly taken down to be peer reviewed.....but in the meantime Gillead's stock is dropping like a stone.

Better news from yesterday was that a company out of Auburn NY--Tessy Plastics has committed to producing Covid test kits and in large numbers. They are talking about hiring 200 new people and hope to be up and running within 15 weeks. They think they can produce 10 million kits a month.
