He needs to stay off of TV until he has something relevant to put forth to the American people. The market meltdown would happen either way, but having a President out there with little clue and little value to add day after day is certainly spooking markets.
This is not about Trump. He has been getting out there and trying to reassure the country. Heck, he and Cuomo managed to bury the hatchet enough to be actively working together for NY. Plenty of time to go back to hating each other after.

Like him or not, getting out in front of camera in a crisis like this is the exact right answer.

And apologies, if you believe that he is responsible for spooking the markets, you do not really understand how the market works. It is infinitely much more complicated than simply scaring the mom & pap investors to panic sell.

You got that right. As a former broker on the trading floor of the NYSE, its a lot more complicated than that.

What measures? Really? many businesses closed and more closing by the day, schools closed, restaurants closed, venues of 50 or more closed for 2 months, public transportation being limited. Basically the only places open by me are doctor's offices, hospitals, pharmacies, grocery stores and gas stations and the measures are getting more aggressive as we speak. This will all help. That 495k number is absurd.

that all helps but it's not to the same level as China and we don't have the same testing abilities as other places.

We're basically looking at maybe slowing it down with these measures (and again, these things are only in parts of the country, not the entire country) which is better than doing nothing but at the same time not really as much as you and some others seem to think it is.

I hope you're right in all this but to be quite frank you don't seem to have any expertise in health or epidemiology compared to the people who do and are the ones making these kinds of predictions. It may be their job to assume the worst but...they also know more about the situation than you do (or I do)

No, I am no expert by any means but I have common sense and I don't believe everything I read online. I look at official numbers and what is currently being done in the US to suppress. Countries such as Italy with a population of 60 million have reported 2500 deaths to date. This for a country that has been in the news for initially not doing the right thing especially in the northern sections. Alarmist and worst case scenario numbers in the US just don't make a lot of sense to me. This is my opinion. We will see what the numbers say in 2-3 months. I hope I'm right.

I hope you're right too. I think some of these estimates are assuming worst case scenarios and not situations where successful treatments (not cures) are found and things progress in a different fashion

You don't think his government's bungled response to all of this has played a factor? I got a bridge to sell ya.

The market is looking for a way out of this mess as quickly as possible, and the government has given nothing but garbled and conflicting information for months now. The man has been incredibly lucky to not face a situation like this in his first 3+ years, and he's failed miserably at mobilizing the federal government's response and messaging. But yeah, that has nothing to do with him. Give me a break with that ignorance.

Of course its "more complicated"

But would you disagree that a quicker/crisper response from the federal government would've helped the situation just a bit? Anyone who doesn't concede to that fact is just being a stubborn MAGA cultist. We certainly have a president who loves to lavish praise on himself when the market is on the up and up.

I honestly don't know that, maybe in a less significant way than you say. The market was at an all time high and was due for a correction IMO even if the corona virus didn't exist. Even with somebody else in office there is no getting around the economic fallout from what is occurring and yet to come. The market is a leading indicator. I strongly believe the US will have negative GDP growth in Q2 and Q3 bringing us into an official recession. Jesus himself could have been the president and the economic fallout would be massive regardless.

Fair enough.

But the take that the market has nothing to do with Trump and therefore nothing to do with the policies of the federal government, which another poster tried to imply, is one of the dumbest I've seen in a while.

Wow glad you’re doing bettter. If you don’t mind me asking, what were your symptoms like? What did your treatments and care consist of?

I have a lung condition called sarcoidosis. I usually battle bronchitis every year and I thought I was having another case of that but within a few days I felt like death. I had zero energy, my body hurt all over, a cough that wouldn’t go away, I coughed so much I had headaches all the time..I had a steady fever but I was taking over the counter meds to battle all of this, I also had amoxicillin left over from my last bout which I started taking as well...when I started not being able to breath i went straight into panic mood. They wouldn’t see me, never mind test me. Hospitals are usually frantic and busy but you get quiet stretches... if you’ve ever been in the ER on a Saturday night in the summer in NYC... picture that madness and triple it.

Bill Gates did a reddit AMA today. He responded to a question regarding the London School model/report as follows:

Fortunately it appears the parameters used in that model were too negative. The experience in China is the most critical data we have. They did their "shut down" and were able to reduce the number of cases. They are testing widely so they see rebounds immediately and so far there have not been a lot. They avoided widespread infection. The Imperial model does not match this experience. Models are only as good as the assumptions put into them. People are working on models that match what we are seeing more closely and they will become a key tool. A group called Institute for Disease Modeling that I fund is one of the groups working with others on this.

My good friend Rick Harsch who is a novelist (Voices after Evelyn, Skulls of Istria, The manifold destiny of Eddie Vegas, etc. etc.) lives in Izola Slovenia with his wife and two children--one the baseball happy Arjun who plays little league all over Northern Italy. Izola is about 20 miles from Trieste where Rick works in the Maritime Museum or he did until very recently anyway.

For a picture of what's going on in Italy he emailed me today: 'The worst thing I go through these days is checking the statistics regarding the virus for Italy. They had three very bad days in a row and I hoped it was a plateau, but today was even worse; up from over 3, 000 new cases and 300+ deaths to over 4,000 and 400+ deaths. Doctors are dying. There isn't a lot of reportage from there and maybe that's for the best'.

I was given stronger steroids....Also got anti-inflammation meds
I got trashed last week offering just that as an idea to treat it if it gets a foothold and in severe cases. The body’s immune cascade reaction becomes harmful to itself more so than the virus at that point.

Glad to hear you’re feeling better!

Not true. We literally don't know the % of population infected in the US because we don't have even a fraction of enough testing to have any idea.

We haven't even had enough testing to test everyone who might have it.

We literally have no idea how bad it currently is.

You literally don't test every single millions upon millions with the flu either because they're fine. What's your point? If only those who were tested and went to hospitals and died with the flu were in the picture it would be 10000x worse than this considering tens of thousands are already dead from the flu this season alone. I have no doubt as many people have this new virus or will get it as the flu annually. It's just new so it's slightly more deadly to the elderly and we should take care to focus on keeping them safe not shutting down the world.

Everybody stepping off a plane or cruise ship, and everyone who was near a confirmed case

Right, when the genome was sequenced barely 2 weeks earlier and no one was mass producing the tests anywhere. In any case last I checked borders were closed in mid January from affected countries (China) and people cried racist. So again, who were you supposed to be testing? Literally the whole world?
