We have way, way more cases than 4,000. Likely an order of magnitude more. If we had the ability to confirm that, the less compliant among us might be willing to make the necessary “sacrifices” required to get this under control. As it stands now, there is still a large portion of the population who either denies the existence of the problem or is unafraid of its consequences.

I concede that some number, probably a large percentage, of these people would feel that way no matter what. But to claim that the president’s initial reaction to this threat hasn’t emboldened that type of person is insane from my view.

Everything feels about a week behind to me. For reference, I made my big emergency Costco run two full weeks ago. We are limiting damage now when we could have been proactively preventing it.

I understand, yes, there are many more cases out there. We as a Nation could never be fully prepared for this. We have 330 million people. To stock enough ventilators for something like this, which we have never had to do, doesn’t seem realistic. Anything invested in either becomes obsolete or needs some type of preventative maintenance. Imagine investing billions for epidemics which never happen.

Are we a week behind? Maybe but if we closed everything last week how many, especially the media, would claim we were premature? People would go nuts. Wish it was a perfect world and let’s hope this isn’t a disaster generations from now will read about.

Might head into the office on Thursday/Friday to take care of some stuff that came in before we were ordered to stay home. But mostly to take home my giant bottle of sanitizer that was left behind, assuming it hasn't been stolen yet.

Too funny, that's exactly what I did today. Went in to take care of office business and brought home the big refill bottle of Purell

The subway ride sucked, I'm not doing that anymore for weeks. Very anxiety filled even if I didn't touch a single thing with my hands. It's that recirculated air that makes you paranoid

You went out and you didn't get tested? Shame on you. Weren't you preaching that the other day?

No I was "preaching" social distancing as in not gathering in crowds. Even on the train I stayed as far away from other people as possible

I went to a small and pretty empty restaurant a few nights ago with my wife to help my friend save his struggling business and you were just so appalled. I guess you had to step down from your soap box for a moment.

Sounds safe.

Hudson Valley Restaurant Week postponed was really looking forward to the Waygu at Mediterraneo in White Plains. :(

Actually, ventilators never have an expiration date and are almost always useful in the long run. So this is an absolute misconception and something we should have been stockpiling for this very situation (which has been predicted for many years as not a matter of if, but when).

Also, for all those getting upset about supposed 'partisanship,' there have been some great responses by Republican Governors/Mayors and some horrid ones from Democratic Mayors. So calling something a spade a spade does not mean you are just being a political hack.

Republican DeWine is perhaps setting the standard for how leadership should be done in these trying times. The same can obviously not be said for Trump or De Blasio.

Talk about exaggerations, if I remember correctly people were discussing those pictures of people pub crawling and ignoring CDC recommendations. I've been home since mid last week and I had to go to the office to take care of things before they shut down everything. I was the only one there and it's going to be empty for the foreseeable future. If you think that's soapbox material *shrug*

we have approx 924,000 hospital beds and 330 million people. And all the ventilators would need some type of PM. They can’t just sit there for a decade plus. Do we store them next to the gas masks, defibrillators and multiple other life saving devices?

I get what you are saying but the numbers are off the charts along with the expense and upkeep.

No it's not an exaggeration. You specifically said how can I go out to a restaurant and not get tested. That i should be concerned about infecting others. I remember it because it was so ridiculous, like this 60 yo is going to go pub crawling. I don't care what you do. You can lick the poles on the subway for all I care just get off your high horse.

doesn’t that say a lot though? Blame the Government in the opening then make two legit points in which Americans still don’t listen regardless. Early or late, the message is out there yet so many go about their business. Isn’t that a “bungled” reaction?

so many want to point blame yet aren’t accountable themselves (not the op) but those flooding Disney, flooding the bars, going to restaurants, etc.

At least your societal takes are as bad as your hockey takes.

It’s the federal governments job to be the first to sound the alarm on something like this. Not only did they dither, but they willfully downplayed it until a couple days ago. And you wonder why nothing has settled in with the public? Sheesh

But there's nothing wrong right? If it were up to you nothing would be closed and there wouldn't be enough beds to treat the sick. Can't inconvenience you after all

Sounds like you have all the “shiny new” right answers. Glad we have you

what exact point are you trying to make? Cuz it seems like you're saying "we can't really do anything so why bother trying and therefor we can't criticize the government's response"

which is a pretty nihilistic take on it all

I don’t even know what the question is. A fella follows me around and now you appear. There were multiple posts and messaging so have no idea what you’re posting about.
Cheers

Just a reminder, fair critique of the President as it relates to COVID-19 is not political rhetoric and therefore will not be deleted. It is about as on topic as it gets at the moment. The same goes for praise for whatever he does right.

Please re-read the stickied post at the top.

Thank you.

Just going to say thanks for what you guys are going through on this forum. There is enough to go through in real life rn, but allowing us to discuss things here has not been an option and it's great we can all look out for each other.

All the mods deserve recognition for what you have to put up with on a day in day out when hockey is the discussion, but this is another level. Hope everyone stays safe and that this place is a spot to come to and help each other out.

Also, please, if anyone needs anything because of this and may not have alternatives, please share and I'm sure we have a close enough group to help out where we can.

Ever since I started studying health, I have always been fascinated with viruses. Are they living or non-living? They are tiny, much smaller than cells, have no nucleus, can't reproduce, no mitochondria or any way to produce energy. They have some genetic material but not much else. And yet we continue to say this virus can't survive very long on surfaces and such, and will die. Suggesting it is alive. This debate continues among those in the scientific community.

Here is a good recent article (Jan 2020) showing the immune response under a coronavirus infection. It is a bit complicated with the many avenues of response, as you can guess, but fascinating at the same time....
