Today's episode of The Daily (NYT podcast) is brutal. 25 minutes of an Italian doctor detailing all of the problems they're facing. Says that they don't have enough protective equipment to allow families to visit their loved ones and that many of those people end up dying alone in the hospital. People are constantly calling to check on the status of family members, and sometimes they call before the hospital has a chance to call them and inform them that their family member passed away.

If people resist changing their daily lives in an effort to protect others, we could very easily head down a similar path.

reason is if he closes it completely then the United States will retaliate with closed border to Canada and Canada gets screwed on all the trade that has to come through
Pretty sure the flow of people coming and going can be stopped and still allow the flow of goods to move to and fro . There of course would be testing done on drivers and such . Then again...maybe it can't be done ? I just assumed it was able to be done ? While it would be 100 % virus proof...it would be better than thousands going to and fro besides the needed goods by each side of the border . Possible or impossible ?

I did have to laugh about the idea of stopping people and checking them as they re-enter the country.

I have 4 friends who have flown back to the U.S. in the last 48 hours, and all of them walking right through the airport, got their bags and went back into society.
...and that is why this will linger for more than a few weeks . All it takes is for a few unknown carriers to come and go . I as well know people that have done the same thing @Edge . They were away for two weeks in Cuba and arrived home Friday night and they were out shopping on Saturday morning....

Next big bomb is going to be a shelter in place order
Is it such a change from now? I read about the restrictions in San Fran. My family is working from home now, I only go out to buy essentials and even then maintain as much distance between me and others. Most ppl locally though seem pretty indifferent, standing literally on top of me in line and I basically feel their hot nasty potentially virus-laden breath, but for myself I’m pretty much already sheltered in place. I go for a walk/jog at night to get exercise but that’s about it for recreational stuff outside the home. I’m hoping the morons in my community who continue to PooPoo everything will wake up soon if there is a shelter in place order

Huge difference between doing what you're doing which is voluntarily self-isolating and having a mandate from the government for no one to exit their homes except to buy food and supplies.

For example, despite the option to work remotely my office is still up and running and a lot of people are choosing to go in. I think a lot of other workplaces are the same way.

Weird briefing from Cuomo. He said the curve isn't flattening enough and to expect further measures. They can tell that type of thing already?

Which is weird because the curve shouldn't really flatten until almost a week or so from when the big lockdown measures are put into effect. It's not immediate.

Is Andy expecting an aggressive decrease in new cases and stuff? That just won't happen, especially in NYC.

When more testing is available (which it is now), did they expect less numbers to be coming in? I swear if they aren't using percentages as a model, we're all f***ed.

I think the change is it's going to be a shock to those "morons" when the guidance/requests become demands. The optics WILL look different and optics can drive people's behaviors.

If it happens, can't say I didn't see it coming from last week. Reminds me of the film 'The Rock' where at the end Maj. Baxtor wants Gen. Hummel to ask for more time. Hummel is the government, Baxtor is the citizens, putting the phone down is the isolation directives:

I appreciate it. But honestly? It is what it is. We are not going to be the only ones. Heck, most dentist offices across the country are closing right now. In a way, it is all towards the common goal of stopping the spread of this virus. This is what savings are for and luckily, were about to shave $600 a month off our mortgage payment on a refi so... things aren't all bad.

Not to mention, with us effectively being quarantined, we aren't going out and spending money like drunken sailors so we might actually come out ahead

Yeah, and I heard a guy say something like "sure it sucks losing more money than I ever have before, but not nearly as much as it would have sucked if everyone else wasn't doing the same thing". And like, its maybe not the most sympathic thing to say -- but I think he had a point... ;)

Living near SF, it's not as busy as it normally is but this morning there were still a lot of cars driving around with people going to work etc. Going outdoors for exercise is allowed so I was out riding my bike and hitting up the trails and there were maybe a few less people but still within the "normal" range out there. Saw what looked like a few people meeting for trail runs...can't really tell if they're adhering to the 6 foot policy but seems like a bad idea.

Basically...still a lot of people doing stuff even with a shelter in place order because there's enough leeway in it to allow such. It's hard to tell how much is people being careful and how much is people carrying on as usual.

Like I said I'll go out for exercise but solo or with my family, avoid people outside, and not go out for other reasons unless required. We took our kid out of daycare and basically have committed to having him home for the next 3 weeks which is going to be rough with two people who usually work full time but we'll make it work

I mean, thats fine and all, but its a little like putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound.

I can't stress enough how many jobs are going to be lost when companies finish pricing these impacts in.

This should show you that the government can only do so much to stop the bleeding. They are doing what they can. I think it is a brilliant move. You may not be impacted but tons of hourly workers, servers, etc. will benefit tremendously from this.

Now, if we can just get the payroll tax cut on top of this and the bill that the house put forward, we will be in decent enough shape.

Here in PA, there were 13,000 unemployment claims yesterday.

To put that into perspective, the peak day of the great recession was about 12,000 claims.
