And then had no money left to deal with the medical system overrun and economy trashed from crushed consumer confidence from unchecked spread in non-LTC's

I fully agree that something should have been / needs to be done to address LTC's, but it wouldn't have been and is not a magic bullet.

It and the economic impact are the two most keenly felt hurts in the path we've taken. Other paths would have had different outcomes.

I'm obviously not suggesting hiring a million people, I'm putting it in perspective how much money we spent. How about adding 5,000 LTC workers in Ontario? No way we could have done that? FYI, Ford announced a plan to double LTC workers over 4 years last week. There's some hard hitting government action for you right there.

Not to get controversial here but I do not trust numbers out of Florida quite frankly. There was a shitstorm in Florida about a whistle blower, how she was wrongfully arrested; and few folks resigned because they did not like what florida governor was doing.
This sounds like a.......conspiracy. Gasp. What, do you believe in the Bermuda Triangle too? ;)

She was arrested gestapo style, you can't take anything seriously out of Florida. Its not controversial.

my only guess is preventive measures since they assume folks would be travelling to these types of areas.

I live in simcoe county, so it’s not the best here. But if I was in northern Ontario and only had family up there I’d be pretty ticked.

Well I can tell you that folks are travelling up here from Toronto or any community south of Barrie ever increasingly and its really making people here angry, myself included. They are renting cottages or hotels doing their shopping, visiting family...

We don't have the health care availability and coverage to be able to handle an outbreak here. Not to mention our majority elderly population where I live.

Lots of people coming to Muskoka to have Christmas at the cottage (and I suspect most will stay for the duration of the lockdown). In fact lots never left after summer. Our schools had a massive increase in applications based on cottagers trying to get their kids enrolled up here.

I have three freezers full, and I have built up my pantry over the year. One final shopping trip tomorrow bright and early and were set for quite a while.

This virus affects people differently. That's an irrefutable fact. The elderly and those with pre-existing conditions are disproportionately affected.

That the government's response has not specifically been tailored around protecting those who are most vulnerable is not just a tragedy, but complete incompetence.

This "we're all in this together" BS needs to stop. We're not all in it together. For some, it's life and death.

All of the deaths today were in long-term care homes. Every single one of them. That the provincial government is talking about gyms, kids at outdoor rinks, and whether professional athletes can play in empty arenas or not, while failing to, for months, protect those living in extremely easy to control environments is mind boggling.
Clearly all governments did not know what they were dealing with here. In fact they still probably don't. I know I don't really get it yet. But your point is valid there MUST have been a way to complete lockdown all nursing and LTC homes in province. Just take every one of them over (then give them back once pandemic is over), pay da owners whatever they made last year in interim and completely ISOLATE each building with testing, entry/exit controls at every location using military resources and temp checks for all. Even for last minute people dying be diligent. This method would have been way less $$$ for our province and fed govt too. Yes there would still be a few deaths with pre existing condition people but much more limited. Yes maybe way more cases too and more sick people who recover. But always remember this is a HINDSIGHT analysis. I find in life, and we all do it, it is much easier to be right after da fact. The brilliant people are da ones who figured it out ahead of time which is why we have so few billionaires in da world who created on their own. It is bloody difficult to do it.

Common sense for once! The fearmongering needs to stop ... look at the data.

86.9% of deaths are aged 70+
Overwhelming 69.2% aged 80+
72% of deaths in Canada coming from LTC homes.

Why isn't the media breaking it down? They just want to show you the total number increasing each day. They want you to live in fear.

What's the average age of death in Canada everyone! End these nonsense lockdowns and stop small businesses from getting destroyed and people going broke. Do some research and look into the data.

Are people over 70 disposable to you?

No but when the year over year death has barely increased in Canada from the last 5 years and a majority of deaths are at the average age of death ... maybe locking down is not the answer.

Maybe fearmongering the public is not the way to go. The way the media talks about Covid - most people would never know how the deaths break down because they just show total overall numbers to scare people.

Lockdown and stuff is useless, unless there is a better and more effective tracking system.
Everyone who gets off the plane from Intl flights, need to be in quarantine for 14 days despite test results. And they need to be inside a bubble like the NHL, asking people to self isolate and be honest is stupid

I've said it before but a very significant amount of community clusters in the first wave came from returning Canadian expats through Pearson.

And we know this is true simply due to the wildly disproportionate amount of Pearson taxi and limo drivers who died of Covid during that time.

10 Pearson taxi and limo drivers have died in COVID-19 pandemic, union says

Am I the only one here enjoying the tax conversations? As a young business owner, I’m finding it interesting and educational. Thanks fellas!

And yes we pay a f*** ton in HST. We got to find a better way at taxing the rich, like the people that earn 10 million plus. Although I guess it just gives them more incentive to move their money offshore.

There was an article out in national post how "rich CEOs" used the wage subsidy that govt provided for covid to give dividends to share holders including themselves in "Millions"
FP Investigation: As CEWS flowed in, dividends flowed out | Financial Post

govt is f***ing STUPID!

all our tax money instead of helping us is helping rich people get more rich

Absolutely hate how govt is so DUMB at our expense. They should have used that money as transfers directly into worker's bank accounts (they haev the info in the T4 forms); but instead did this dumbass BS

People working in fed govt care more about being bilingual instead of having competent people doing the job. Its a f***ing JOKE

What if all of the money spent on stimulus packages and such (due to shutting down so many parts of the economy) was instead spent on isolating/protecting the elderly and vulnerable? Canada has spent eighty four billion dollars on covid so far. That would go a pretty long way to keeping the elderly/vulnerable isolated and safe.

spend some time in Ottawa.

The government "dumb" is felt everywhere. It is literally palpable.

We're all in this together" -- "You are not essential" -- but these businesses are still allowed to be open during the lockdown because ... reasons:

- Food stores like Bulk Barn
- Food courts in shoppings malls for curbside pickup
- Retailers including Dollarama, Walmart & CostCo (not just the food section)
- All Retailers in shopping malls for pickup. Get that essential sweater!
- Car dealerships
- Hotels
- Massage Therapists

- Night clubs and strip clubs are only permitted to open if they operate as a food or drink establishment, in which case they would only be allowed to provide takeout, pickup or delivery.

Liquor and beer stores --> Lockdowns mean you gotta stock up. Not like you can order online or anything. Wait in that big line instead!

and my personal favourite:

Film and television production including all supporting activities such as hair, makeup, and wardrobe --> Extremely essential!

Government workers - fear not. You will continue getting you paycheques. Also you all working from home. We might have to give news to a few thousand people that they won't have jobs during Christmas - but it's for the greater good.

Oh yeah and those 65000 people flying into Toronto Pearson unchecked each week - well that's also essential ... so listen up Canada ....stay home - stay safe --- don't see family or friends during the holidays. Btw we also have a goal of 1.2 million immigrants coming into Canada (400k/year) -- I know unemployment is high and we're telling you to stay home and not see family ... but the 15,100 immigrants were essential who came in October 2020. But please -- stay home - don't see family or friends for the holidays - it's too dangerous.

Small businesses - stay closed. Even if you own a small shop. Gym owner you say? Think of the people ... close it down!

And remember -you still have time to do all your Christmas shopping before we shut it down! We understand it will be more busy due to Christmas shopping -- but that's alright !

Two weeks to flatten the curve!

Is this a copy and paste or did you come up with that? That's brilliant.

Thanks :) -- I don't get too many compliments - mostly insults thrown my way. The list of things open and all the data/numbers are from news sources -- other than that it's my own opinion. Just trying to point out the hypocrisy because if the government gave a shit about the average Canadian - steps would have been made long ago.

And don't get me wrong. I think immigration is great - my parents were immigrants. But if this is the deadliest pandemic since the Spanish Flu and you can only have 10 people at a family members funeral (WITH MASKS) .... and your killing Granny for seeing friends or family during the holidays --> tell me how 65k per week at Toronto Pearson or 15,100 legal immigrants make any god damn sense.

People need to start opening their eyes.

This is a joke. Literally the only thing I enjoy about the winter (other than hockey and basketball) and it gets shut down for NO reason. You telling me I’m gonna catch COVID skiing down a f***ing hill? It’s not like you can use the facilities to eat or even to use the bathrooms, and you have to wear a mask which many do already when they go skiing, so where is the danger exactly?

They're breaking up hockey games on outdoor rinks with 50ish people in Alberta. Not surprising that they are shutting down ski hills where hundreds of people will congregate, no matter what measures are in place. Sadly.

Yeah I know I have a couple neighbours who have done exactly what you said. They left last summer and are not back yet. But they still have their homes here. They just don't want to catch COVID and decided they could work and live in their cottage this winter. And a lot of Torontonians in core bought places up there too which is why your real estate has doubled in past 9 months. Toronto's condos are depleted down 20%+ in value/rent easy. And can you really blame these people. To me it is a smart move if you already had a cottage up there. You have BY FAR less odds of catching in Muskoka then in Peel. It is da law of supply and demand. Da real $$$ will be made in 2022 when immigration is back to normal and all those cottagers move back to city. Smart move today is buy a couple large well placed condos downtown for cheap and wait and hold for a year. Big $$$ landlords/banks can't renovate those office buildings to condos so lets get real folks all you office workers are going back to your buildings. I know you don't like it but it will happen. Guaranteed 30% return on your $$$. I am waiting for bottom of market but will buy 3/4 condos in late winter. I don't see a better return right now then that one.
