Copps Coliseum is now officially a 'relic'

Don’t renovate FirstOntario Centre: city staff

I'll agree not to renovate it to make it "NHL ready" - it would be a waste of money.
Howver, I wouldn't mind some sort of exterior renovation just for aesthetics. Wonder what it would cost to only renovate the exterior to look like the mockup above?

Could Hamilton build a new arena around one of the piers that are being redeveloped?

If only private money is involved, sure - why not? But no way in hell should any public money be used to build a new arena.

People need to see this for what it is.

A mostly privately funded study to examine the building, determine its potential and determine what it would cost to get it there. It was split into doing a lower bowl only....then upper bowl later scenario.

This is good for the city to know....but that's not why it was done. The people that pumped the dough into the study want to know. Why would private investors want to know the capability of Copps Coliseum? Why would private investors want to know how much it would cost to be "NHL ready"?

The city was never going to look at this and say "Well....lets spend $235M and bring this sucker up to speed!".

This was to find out the capabilities of the building...and the cost to reach those capabilities.

It should be pretty obvious why someone or some people would want to know that.

And now we (and "they") know that updating First Ontario Centre is a much cheaper option that building new.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Even with the results of this study, I'm pretty positive that still no one will be attempting to bring a team to Hamilton anyway. This should finally put a nail in that coffin.

Not too interested in reviving this thread, but can't leave this comment without replying.

This study would do the opposite of putting a nail in that coffin. In fact, the guy that spearheaded the study inquired about Private/Public partnerships as well as the City's willingness to develop an 'Entertainment District' around the venue.

With the results of this study.....the carrot again gets dangled. Why do the study? Why now? Why is this guy interested in Private/Public partnerships? Why is he looking into creating an entertainment district? If nothing else....ignore the NHL for now and we'll look at this subject of this thread, it should prove Copps/FOC isn't a "relic".
