I think all posters have to put this trade in perspective. Chevy is trying to deal a player in Copp, that's had a couple of concussions, has mostly played on the 3rd line, and has very poor scoring hands. He's a great skater, and a great team player, and a well liked guy, but what do you expect to get for Copp ? A really good shot to the head, may end his career. I believe he's already had 2-3 concussions. That's serious stuff, and if I were the Rangers, I don't think I'd give up 2 2nd round picks, to acquire Copp, and have the right to "overpay" him, after dealing with Overhart. No great deal for the Rangers IMO.
All the other GM's knew Chevy's number, and I'm sure they weren't lining up with their first round picks for a player like Copp. Chevy did the best he could, and from what I see, he did great, getting 2 seconds. Also the Rangers may make the Conference final, if you think about the fact that an average team like Montreal did last year. Anything can happen.
Also, to keep Copp would have been foolish, as our chances of making the playoffs are about 30 - 35 % at best, even with Copp, so you take what you can get, and run with it.
Considering the circumstances, I don't think any GM could have done any better. I'm happy with the deal, as Copp would have walked anyways, and we'd be holding the bag with "nothing." At least we got something in this deal, and in the other deal, we got Appleton back for "nothing." All around I'd say a pretty good job by Chevy.
