That's why I said I can only see this scenario coming to fruition if Malkin is a UFA. Is there a deadline to when a player has to be bought out via a compliance buyout? Malkin could be signed on July 2nd and Richards bought out 2 hrs later?

You'd be counting on Malkin wanting to "step out on his own" which is highly unlikely. The guy really likes Pittsburgh and the guys he's playing with. Not like he's going to get more money elsewhere either. He seems to be perfectly content riding shotgun to Crosby and taking over the reins when he gets injured.

I was watching the NHL Network last night. The Penguins want to re-sign Malkin and are willing to pay Malkin more than Crosby to get it done. Their share the agent in Pat Brisson. Pitt told Brisson they wanted to re-sign both of them before they did the Crosby deal. They have to wait to do the Malkin deal.

Yeah. That's all clear to me and I agree. I've just been playing with the idea ever since it became known that teams could use 2 compliance buyouts. I mean does anyone think it hasn't crossed Sather's mind, also? If I as a fan overseas am thinking about it, he's aware of it also, not?

It's a huge longshot, I know, but as long as he's not signed, he's scheduled to become a UFA. I'm not saying Glen should plan the future of the team on the hypothesis that Malkin might become available, just saying it's a scenario worth discussing as long as it's possible.

Good. Just make us and MTL count the cap hit this season as if they were still in the organization, declare them free agents and wipe them from the books in the summer as if the teams used the compliance on them. Seems straightforward.

I could see the argument opposing that position.

I think the question that comes across everyones mind when you are that good is "Can I do this on my own"

Malkin can make a strong case for being better than Sidney right now.

However, he will NEVER be THE guy in Pittsburgh as long as Sidney is there or as long as Malkin is there.

I'm not saying that he is destined to leave, but it wouldn't shock me one bit if he did want to venture out to another team and look to cement his legacy in this sport as one of the best in the game today and a leading man as opposed to a support player.

As good as Malkin is, as long as he and Sidney play on the same team, Malkin will always be a support guy much in the way Jagr was to Lemieux.

It's the competitive nature in all of us that want to be the best. There's nothing wrong with it as long as it's not done in a selfish way.

Redden is owed $7.129M in salary. $2.129M this season. $5M next season. 2/3. $4.75M. Paid out over 4 years. $1,118,667 per.

Appears as if agreement reached as suggested here earlier.Compliance buyout can be used now on Redden with NYR taking 5.6M cap hit (1/2)...

2/2..NYR would take cap hit even if Redden signs with another team as UFA. This option will be available to all clubs (Mont/Gomez).

Good on all sides to come to an agreement for the benefit of Gomez, Redden and any other bad Sather signings out there.

This means Gomez will soon be available.

Umm, that's ridiculous. This isn't an amnesty buy-out. Going to wait for a corroborating source before I jump on this one.

Yeah, Kyper's had a knack for being wrong in details like these. I wanna wait 'cause I'd much prefer a buyout period in June 2014 to this. This seems like a buyout you can use instead of the one this June.

I hope the buyout windows stay the same, with the only change being that teams can choose to use one now or after the season. I want that one after next season dammit.
