Rangers are screwed next year with the 64.3m cap. Say goodbye to Gaborik and maybe even Richards.

Not an expert but we look fine for next season. I think we might be in bit of trouble in 2 years time however. Del Zotto will get a longterm deal. McDonagh, Stepan and Hagelin are RFAs after this season and then in 2 years time Kreider is RFA and Hank, Girardi, Gaborik and Callahan are UFAs. There'll be some tough decisions to make, namely Gaborik and/or Girardi.

Let's win a cup or two before then and it will be a lot less painful to deal with.

I say they most likely are not
Depends entirely on the RFA signings
In a few days we will see where del Zotto winds up
Hagelin, Stepan & McD will cost around $9M, maybe a little less.
This is all elaborated on the first post of this thread.
Time will tell
But it is possible to make it work - ie resigning RFAs and retaining core

Torts-take out the bonuses from Kreider, Miller, and McIlrath, as they no longer count against the cap if you're on an ELC.

Small difference, but next year, every bit of cap space counts.

Maybe Lindberg replaces Boyle. If he's ready, it would save the Rangers some more space.

It'll be a tight fit, but I think Sather will find a way.

The bonuses can't be used to satisfy the lower limit.

Couple of small items from the MOU.

It looks like compliance buyouts can only be executed during the ordinary course buyout window, which is June 15-30.

Also, revenue sharing is not a fixed dollar amount, but rather a percentage. That means it will grow (or shrink) as revenue does.

Mats Zuccarello, playing for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL, remains on the Rangers’ reserve list and would be eligible to play for the Blueshirts this season — without clearing waivers — if he were to sign with the club following the end of his season in Europe. That represents a change in the CBA.

Similarly, management will keep a keen eye on a pair of 21-year-old forwards skating in the Swedish league — Jesper Fast of HV 71, and Oscar Lindberg of Skelleftea — for possible late-season NHL duty.

“I don’t know if it’s a good rule or not,†Sather said. “But we’ll sure take advantage of it if it makes us better.â€

I have a feeling we're not going to see all of those guys back, because Glen will go after a certain UFA in 2014...this Evgeny Malkin dude.

If the Rangers somehow got Malkin as a UFA id poop myself lol.

Use Gaboriks freed up money for him?

I do agree that I highly doubt he makes it to UFA.

Since MDZ is signed and we now know what kind of cap space Sather is working with, I was looking at defensemen who are set to become UFA this coming offseason. Rangers absolutely need a reliable, veteran d-man to round out the group.

Here are some potential targets. This is of course assuming the Rangers are in the playoff picture and the trading team is out of the playoff picture by the trade deadline:

Lydman (ANA) - $3 million
Leopold (BUF) - $3 million
Aucoin (CLB) - $2.25 million
Sutton (EDM) - $1.75 million
Fistric (DAL) - $1.475 million
Hannan (NAS) - $1 million

Slim pickings but don't see Sather obtaining a contract which carries any salary over to next year unless he makes some kind of big deal while getting rid of an established forward.

This would be a non-issue if Sauer was healthy. Ugh.

Brad Richards

So what are we to do with Brad Richards?

Do you guys really think he will play out to his full contract ?
-Richards will be 40 years old by the end of the 2019-20 season, which is the final year of his contract. He won't be worth a $6.66 million cap hit at that age, or in the few years before that.

Richards is 32 years old and his offensive production has dropped by at least 10 points in each of the last two seasons.

Team Year GP G A PTS
Stars 2009-10 80 24 67 91
Stars 2010-11 72 28 49 77
Ranger2011-12 82 25 41 66

Would you use the other buy-out at the end of the 2013-2014 season ?

CAP ADVANTAGE RECAPTURE
Teams receiving a “cap advantage” from long-term contracts — defined as seven years or more — will be penalized in the event the player retires or “defects” from the NHL before the contract expires. A team receives a “cap advantage” when the player’s actual salary exceeds his cap hit in a given year.
Following retirement/defection, the “advantage” will be “recaptured” and charged against the club’s cap in equal amounts each year until the contract expires. This penalty applies to any team that received a cap advantage from the contract — ie. a traded contract — except in the event that the trade occurred prior to the new CBA coming into place in January 2013.

They signed him to a retirement contract. It's technically a 9 year deal, but it's really a 6 year deal. Each of the last 3 years he gets paid $1 million. He either retires after 6, or they buy him out if they feel it is necessary.
