I just can't feel the same way you do. At this point, the guy cares more about the cash he's owed than rekindling his career with another team. All he has to do is walk away from the contract.

Yeah I get that, but he'd be stupid to do so. He has to decide--do I walk away from a ton of money to see if I can still do it, or sit here and rot while collecting a paycheck? Again, it would be silly to walk away from the cash, and he knows it. Which is why he isn't doing it. I like Wade and he seems to be a good teammate, so I just wish it ended differently for him.

I think you've got it right, nyr2k2. He was a great player. He got paid for it. He went into steep decline much faster than nearly any other player I've ever seen. He continued to do his job and by all accounts was a good teammate and mentor in HFD.

Sure, it eases the blow to be set financially (hopefully he had good financial advisors), but doesn't change the fact that he can't do the one thing he loves and knows (or knew) how to do well. I sincerely hope he's got other career ambitions/interests that he finds fulfilling.
 
Right, from a purely human standpoint I feel for the guy. He can no longer play the game he loves because of the realities of the world (as in how stupid it would be to walk away from millions of guaranteed dollars). Yeah there's a choice to be made, but is it really a choice?

I understand most people won't feel that way about the situation, but that's always how I look at things.

Guy has made over $68M playing hockey since 1995. Two years left giving him almost $6M more - to do nothing. Not many people (less than 0,001% of the world) make that kind of cash anywhere. Not saying that money is all - but it has certainly given him fantastic opportunities later in life that a miniscule fraction of the world population will ever get. I hope he enjoys it too, and I am sure he will get over his "treatment by the NYRs during his steep demise".

I think it is a choice, given all the money he has made already. Will it really make a difference to him, his future or his family's future if he makes 2 mil instead of 6 mil the next 2 years? I doubt it. If it does, then he hasn't managed his money well and I won't feel sorry for him for that.

But if he were to terminate his contract, the possibility exists that no NHL team will sign him. I'm sure his agent has talked to teams, but we don't know if there's any interest. There might not be any. If that's the case, yes, he really doesn't have a choice. But I won't feel sorry for him for that either. The game passes every player by eventually, but not all of them are fortunate enough to still make millions of dollars after it does.
 
There should be a market for a 6.5 hit making 5 million for cap floor teams.

The extra 1.5 mil cap hit isn't enough incentive for a player that at best is only worth 1 or 2 mil, assuming he can even play at this level any more. Teams would be much better off trading for Tim Thomas. 5 mil cap hit (because of 35+ clause), but no salary since he retired. I wouldn't be suprised to see that trade go through as soon as the ink is dry on the CBA.

Edit: Actually, I just looked. The cap floor for this season is 44 mil. Every team is above that, even with bonuses no longer counting toward the floor. So even Tim Thomas probably isn't going anywhere unless boston is willing to give up something to free up that cap space.

So Redden was paid $1M of the $5M as a signing bonus. He probably got that last July. $4M left. 99 day season. $2,129,032.

Yep. Just saying that giving the agent permission to talk to other teams about signing Redden doesn't indicate that Redden is considering the possibility of terminating his current contract. Not to say that you were implying that to begin with.
 
Rangers are screwed next year with the 64.3m cap. Say goodbye to Gaborik and maybe even Richards.

Still the team has some tough decision to make to keep the core of the roster intact. Logically, it seems Gaborik will play his final season here.

Also, CapGeek's numbers include the $5.6m hit of Wade Redden, even though he doesn't show on the roster. Add up all the numbers you put on there. You'll get $65.081m. Still over, but definitely manageable. Especially since I believe you overpaid Stepan and McDonagh, but time will tell on that.
 
Torts-take out the bonuses from Kreider, Miller, and McIlrath, as they no longer count against the cap if you're on an ELC.

Small difference, but next year, every bit of cap space counts.

Maybe Lindberg replaces Boyle. If he's ready, it would save the Rangers some more space.

It'll be a tight fit, but I think Sather will find a way.
