Great point.

Anyone in here with a legal background that can comment on the plausibility of Rogers being hit with an anti-trust lawsuit for this blatant monopolization?
With former Bell and Rogers honchos running the CRTC?!?

forgive me if this has been discussed--How much does this affect the cap for next season, percentage-wise? When they project league revenue I'm assuming they raise or lower the cap according to some set percentage based on how much they think it's going to lower or grow.

Pierre LeBrun with an explanation of the revenue split and "invasion fees".

The NHL’s new Canadian TV deal with Rogers will help raise the salary cap.

The 12-year deal, announced Tuesday morning, is worth $436 million per year for the league and its 30 teams.

Divided by the 30 clubs, that’s an average of $175 million over 12 years per team ($14.5 million per year), although not every team will get the same share, a source said. The seven Canadian NHL teams will get a bigger share of the TV pie due to "invasion fees."

Invasion fees are designed to compensate the Canadian teams for the local inventory lost to the national TV deals.

With more national broadcasts - it means that GCL has less games to show though. The blackouts are due to nationally available games. Whether they change it to be intended for in-market viewers or not is a different story (and if you're an in-market viewer currently you aren't actually the intended audience for the product) - but for the out of market viewer, increased numbers of national games (or exclusivities) is bad because it creates more blackouts.

GCL shows all games, but it is/was subject to blackouts. With no blackouts, you will be able to watch all games, 4 at a time, on GCL.

Just want to mention (and sorry, I have no link/source to prove it), that Rogers' president was on Bob McCowen's show on Sportsnet and he was saying they want to raise the bar of programming quality to that of the NFL's.

Just thought I'd mention this as many are worried about the SN quality vs TSN's quality.

It looks like viewers having nothing to fear and a lot to look forward to.

Since when? If the Oilers are being televised on Sportsnet West, a person with an Edmonton area IP address cannot access the game on GameCenter.

I'm saying that when the new agreement kicks in next year and the blackouts going away games won't be blacked out on GCL any more.

OK, misunderstood.

But is this confirmed? I highly doubt there will no longer be blackouts, if there aren't everyone will just order GCL or CI and not even need cable at all. Rogers wants to force everyone to order up all of their different Sportsnet channels, there's no way they'd leave this massive loophole open.

Hockey Night in Canada has survived without CBC paying a cent.

I still have major doubts SN improves its presentation; can't think of the last time a monopoly was created and the product improved.

The NHL confirmed it in the press conference.

Concerning TSN, they might need to create something big for themselves. An example might be Bell trying to get MLB back in Montreal or TSN pushing for more CFL teams to be created.

I don't know what they can do now though for Winter programming. Basketball gets abysmal ratings in Canada and I would see it taking alot of effort to turn that around.

I personally would love it if European hockey came on TSN.

A Sportsnet show almost made me puke. Some 'Tim and Sid' show with the one guy telling cable subscribers to 'shut up' if they are concerned about it being a monopoly and their bill possibly going up.

I think the inevitable effect to all this is an INCREASE in subscription fees. Whether it is cable bill increase (most likely) or pay-per-view hockey (possible).

Second, I suspect sportsnet/Rogers thinks that the CBC will not have their NHL deal for long. If the Cdn economy gets into enough trouble and the public investment has to be curtailed, HNIC may lose their coverage benefits. Whenever hockey on the CBC becomes reduced, Rogers is the sole benefactor. Rogers is a monopoly not just in this dept. but any future situation, they are the only winners.

Imho, the hockey fan loses, big time.

We don't know that. But I wish Tim and Sid would go away, they are terrible.

Like I said it look a lot like the last few years at the SRC. When you knew it was just a matter of time and that the Saturday game RDS let them show for a while would be going away soon.

This isn't directed at you specifically, you just reminded me of something

Because HNIC has been on CBC so long, the two are intertwined in the public eye. "Hockey Night In Canada" is indeed living on, it's just that it's going to turn into "Hockey Night in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet". There's going to have to be an interesting mental "division now" between "HNIC" and CBC-particularly in 4 years when CBC loses the rights entirely.

What are the chances of Quebec getting their team back with TVA involved?

A journalist was saying that the way that Rogers and Quebecor have conducted themselves quitely, they have become fast friends with Bettman and that it's proof that a NHL team in Quebec is almost a sure thing.

With HNIC staying for the time being, do you guys knows if Sportsnet are going to do a similar program on Sunday Nights like the press talked about last year?

For what it's worth, it is the TNSE model of courtship to a T.
