Concerning TSN, they might need to create something big for themselves. An example might be Bell trying to get MLB back in Montreal or TSN pushing for more CFL teams to be created.

I don't know what they can do now though for Winter programming. Basketball gets abysmal ratings in Canada and I would see it taking alot of effort to turn that around.

I personally would love it if European hockey came on TSN.

I was thinking the other day that Bell could build/co-fund a CFL stadium in Halifax and get naming rights to the stadium, own the team, and benefit from the extra CFL games

They still have regional coverage of Leafs and Jets. I'd assume theyll bid high for the other Canadian markets when they come available.

If people who love the CBC and programs like Sazuki and little Mosque on prarie. Why dont they pay from their own pockets and set up their own Tv network that way people like me dont have to pay a cent of my money.HNIC could have easily survived in the private industy because its about ratings. The BBC check that out you know what I mean. There are criminal charges and lawsuits.

How many times will you post this cr*p. Enough, talk to yourself please. The majority of Canadians as represented by their MP's believe the CBC is worth it and something to support. HNIC used to pay for itself and contribute profits to subsidize otherprogramming. It was never paid for by taxpayers as a few wingnuts with agendas keep repeating ad-nauseum.

This will probably be deleted, but then all CBC bashing posts also should be. CBC news and "little house on the Prairie" etc are great. The BBC gets the mandatory TV licence fee for its support. You want wall to wall TMZ and E! and Armenian***res on TV? (American commercial TV)

I hope I can still get to see the Habs outside QC in any language. RDS was not easy to get everywhere....

Lost in all the "Sportnet is amateur hour...this sucks" uproar is the sad state of things when Canada's national broadcaster has to pimp itself out and surrender all control just to be able to still make the claim that HNIC is still on CBC.

I'd be happier if HNIC just moved over to Rogers, rather than this sad sham of an arrangement that they reached with Hubert Lacroix.

There is an interesting article in the National Post right now that says this might be the beginning of the end for the CBC as we know it, since they basically have no real cost recovery vehicle now. The NP likens the partnership b/w Rogers and CBC to the partnership between someone drowning and the person who throws them a life preserver....pretty apt comparison.

I don't have strong feelings one way or another about the CBC, but I know I don't like watching them act sad and desperate.

Sad for TSN in this. They have really been good in their broadcast of the NHL. And have the best staff/panel or whatever you want to call it of experts.

Shame just to dump them like that.

Is there anyway for them to buy into the deal somehow?

Or the exact reverse.

CBC gets $1B a year from taxpayers now, and the numbers being floated by the Post are that half of its $400M in ad revenue, or $200M, comes from NHL hockey.

So the taxpayer gets further shafted. Now their expenses also go down, since they don't pay NHL rights or the cost to produce the broadcasts, but from what I am reading it's still a net loss to the CBC's bottom line.....and we pick up the tab.

Neither of us have their balance sheets in front of us.

If its unprofitable, they should go away.

I guess what I am nervous about is that the NHL is eventually going to be cable tv only. No CBC at all. There was a time when I was real poor and could not afford cable tv and internet, and I am still not far from that. I still could in my small one bedroom apartment get CBC with my rabbit ears television and watch the NHL games for free. In a few years I am sure that will not be the case anymore. For people that have $80-$150 to pay a month for cable plus internet service it's not a big deal but for poor people like myself it means a lot less hockey. Also a lot of cable tv providers make you buy expensive packages you can't buy specific channels so you might have to buy a package of crap channels just to get Sportsnet and see NHL games. Right now I do have the internet so I can download games when I need to. Still it'll suck in playoff time to have to wait a few days for games to be uploaded somewhere to watch and not get to watch it live. There are some streaming sites out there but most streaming sites are laggy/choppy have poor picture/sound quality and have lots of pop up ads. It sounds like from what I have read in a few places CBC is still going to air some NHL games but I have a feeling that is not going to last long. The 60 year traditional of Hockey Night in Canada is going to die and it'll just be cable or tough. I know I am just looking at the negative but I can't help it I'm a natural pessimist.

Except for Rogers was just named the fastest ISP in Canada:

The PCMagazine article reeks of ignorance. Contrary to what they claim, there IS a FIOS-equivalant in Canada, namely Bell Fibe. Also, cable has congestion issues. I get better viewing on Youtube and browsing in general on my 7 mbits ADSL connection than many people get on 50 or 75 mbits cable. See the Rogers forum posting http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28...t-crawls-so-much-that-I-cant-even-open-sites-

"the agreement guarantees that there will be no further regionalization of games or local blackouts"

"no further regionalization" Meaning the current regionalization stays in place. 3 national broadcasting days, the rest will be regional IMO depending on what games are SN1, 360, City along with those regional games.

I was reading that rogers is going to have a hard time wanting to part with so much cash as the years go on and bell believes they will sell games off to tsn.

I agree with this. Very sad when the day comes that Canadians will have to pay for Cable to see Hockey, no more "free TV" / CBC on rabbit ears...I watched the Habs in the late '60's and all the '70's on a black and white 12" TV....and now people are complaining if they can't their game on HD....Give me a break. $50-$150 for Cable!!! On welfare / Canada Pension? Students?

HNIC on the CBC is worth subsidizing if my vote is there.

Sad. We are losing our soul guys

Just want to mention (and sorry, I have no link/source to prove it), that Rogers' president was on Bob McCowen's show on Sportsnet and he was saying they want to raise the bar of programming quality to that of the NFL's.

Just thought I'd mention this as many are worried about the SN quality vs TSN's quality.

It looks like viewers having nothing to fear and a lot to look forward to.

not really. I hate the guys on sportsnet. the broadcasters on tsn owns SN and always will. the intermission guys do also. you can add as much glitz and glamour as you want, but hte guys we hear and watch make a massive difference.

As a taxpayer, I just dont want to fund the CBC. I can get mediocre TV in other places.

There are a wide variety of stories out there about how profitable or not profitable HNIC was for CBC. You dont know the real numbers, neither do I. Dont play this game with me that you have access to the real numbers. We both know you dont.

Sports right fees are now big business, if CBC cant hack it, then they shouldn't be in the game. If their other shows dont drive a profit, then start fundraisers to get money. But dont ask the taxpayer to pay.
