Rightly or wrongly Cups will impact his legacy. Every other generational player has at least one and most have several.
I know it’s a team game but he’s in the Finals and so far has been shut down. He needs to at least have a strong series imo even though we all know the Oilers wouldn’t even be here without him. The Finals are where legends are made and he needs to be a lot better.

Ovechkin and the caps were forever chokers until they won the cup when he was 32/33

I would be surprised if he doesn't win at least one, the Oilers already had better runs than the Caps

But yes fair or not a cup will affect his legacy

What does Matthews have to do with this thread?

f*** McDavid. For the so-called best player in the world, he's yet to show it.

Yesterday is proof how much hockey is a team game. He was without a doubt the team's best player. If anyone made opportunities happen it was him.
All I remember him doing was digging a puck out of the corner which gave him an accidental assist. Even Draisaitl did more taking out Barkov.

Then the next could be one of a lot of players - Crosby, Yzerman, Shore, Richard, Hasek, Lindstrom...but no way is it McDavid...yet.

the caps had better teams that were gatekept from having to play pittsburgh in r2 year after year after year. the oilers don't have that problem. i would have agreed with you that there's no way he doesn't win at least one, but his performance so far has made me question that

I honestly don't like to factor in injury as I don't think it's fair when comparing. Sandy Koufax is widely considered the greatest pitcher of all time and his career was cut severely short because of injury. I apply the same standard to Bobby Orr, who I do opine as the best ever. I also won't fault Lemieux for much of what he went through considering he lost so much time due to cancer, and frankly, considering what he had to endure injury-wise and still put up the numbers he did is more impressive than playing healthy with a HoF surrounding cast and a personal bodyguard on the ice at all time. I'm not knocking Wayne for his accomplishments and what he did for the game, especially in California, I just have Bobby and Mario ahead of him. Just my opinion. No one has to agree.

Not to sure about widely considered. Many give that mantle to one of Clemens, Cy young, Walter Johnson, Tom Seaver etc.

In only his second NHL year at only 20 years old Gretz outscored Kurri by around 90 points. Do you know how hard it is to outscore your own teammates/linemates by 90 points? The next year he outscored his nearest teammate by 107 points. Who else has done anything like that? Only one close was Mario but was a little older. Gretz and Wayne were the best along with Bobby.

For reference, 107 points would place you 6th in scoring this season. So that entire gap would be an elite statistical season.

He was easily Edmonton’s best player and you obviously didn’t actually watch the game if you think he “did nothing”
His play yesterday reminded me of young McDavid in the playoffs, who would resemble a rich man's Scott Gomez. Great at entering the zone, but would just get pushed to the perimeter and Florida was prepared to prevent odd man chances from him.

Thats not really relevant to my post, but Mario also had a more talented team around him in 91 than McDavid has this year.

McDavid could also score 12 points in the next 2 games and your point would be moot.
Lets try not to get crazy here.
