Because they can't stand McDavid is in Edmonton, same as Bettman/the American owners. If they want to build their sport on markets who don't care when they don't have a winner, that's fine, but then the Canadian teams should be told the truth. It's often forgotten, but there was a time that Crosby was the most explosive skater in the league. In his third season, he suffered a high ankle sprain. He never remotely gained that explosiveness again. For the next several years, he was still a "fast" skater, but not like he was previously.

Edmonton went backwards with their depth. They lost three you, fast forwards. McDavid isn’t getting replaced by any one guy anyway. The club needs to be hyper focused on playing defensively sound. They just haven’t been very good at that so far.
