You can bury 1.15 million.

And then what?

Go without no defensively responsible Cs? Go without an excellent PKer who can win faceoffs?

Or replace him with someone who can do that and provide more offense? That's not cheap.
Kampf was so so on FOs last year 50.9%, and the truth is he's paid way too much for a 4th line centre 2.4m ouch. Maybe getting a 3rd and holding 20%(480k) wouldn't be out of the question unless it became a bigger trade.

Holmberg perhaps is a viable option on the 4th line

Dewar is also a centre but he is lacking on the dot

Perhaps Steeves is finally ready for a 4th line C job he had a solid year with the Marlies

Minten? He's defensively aware and according to some scouting an excellent PKer and face-off man who creates turnovers and turns them quickly into transition

Quillan projects as a potential a 3C NHL who was a top 20(18) NCAA scorer who played in all situations for Quinnipac

they aren't lacking in potential replacements for that job all of them making much less than Kampf even if you have to retain the 20%

I changed my mind.

Good for Dewar. Stick it to the team. Everyone else made sure to get theirs.

What's the worst that could happen.

You're already making league minimum. Can't go any lower. There really is nothing to be lost here by going to arbitration.

Other than your spot on the team I mean.

The fact you're an easily replaceable chump doesn't change cause you might get a 50k raise. Treliving might want to send a message. The buck stops here.

With the lowest paid players on the team.

You lose term going to arbitration.

It's also a very brutal process, where you sit across the table from a team fully prepared to list a number of reasons why you suck. That can have a huge detriment to confidence - we saw first hand what it did to Samsonov last season, and why Swayman isn't doing the Bruins any favors this summer.

I think Dewar is probably worth the amount he is looking for via arbitration. My understanding is the Leafs would have the ability to walk away if they dont like the amount.

It is a big gamble on Dewar imo. If he just signs without arbitration he probably gets a 1 or 2 year deal at around a million. If he goes to arbitration and wins, he may find himself not in the NHL.

Imo he is a good enough 4th liner but easily replaceable. If the 4th line was holmberg-kampf- minten/reaves I dont think it would make a difference.

They can't walk away but they can waive him.

Treliving's dad is part owner of Boston Pizza and Mr Lube. Maybe Tre can pay Dewar low but give him an ID card for unlimited free pizza and lube for the duration of the contract.

Teams can only walk away from arbitration awards if it's greater than $4.5m.

If it's less, than the award is binding between both player and team

Kampf took 2nd. most Short Handed face-offs in the league.

Purely speculation, but my guess is you're most often going against the PP team's best face-off man.

Top 10 for Leafs below. Only "center" to come out on top ...

How many PK Faceoff specialists win while SH? Top 15 below ... mostly they lose.

BTW no JT?

When it comes to Kampf for 2.4m I want a % somewhat higher than 51, it wouldn't hurt for him to to chip in 12g, 4 or 5 of them shorties. Premium defensive killers make that kind of coin not ham and eggers like Kampf.

Again it's about the cap space with him and pretty much the blanks he fires.

What is his SH% compared to the rest and not his overall? No time for calculators, sorry.

The Leafs can only walk away if the amount awarded is over 4.5 mil, which isn't likely to happen.

That said I don't think it's much to worry about. He doesn't have a super strong case, this is all just haggling over a few hundred thousand

This is exactly why he was dealt. Hopefully they can get something done in the 1ish million range.

The fact that it went over the $1 million mark feels kinda iffy to me even though it doesn’t matter.

There’s not that much daylight between a Dewar and an Aston-Reese or an Aube-Kubel or a Gregor.
