Pretty sure he can't actually sign an ELC until he's 18. So there is a good reason. ;)

Actually he could´ve already signed. The rule goes like this:

"Signing Age is age on September 15 of calendar year in which first contract is signed, regardless of actual age when contract signed."

But maybe Blackhawks want to give that ELC as a birthday gift?

Now that he can buy cigarettes legally today might be a step back in his progress into being a pro....but he sure would look cool firing up a dart right before firing off some wristers at practice.

i think you’re misinterpreting the Puckpedia post where you pulled that from.

That’s in reference to how long the player’s ELC can be, not when he can sign his ELC.

The length of the Entry Level contract is outlined in the CBA Section 9.1b:

Signing Age* Years of ELC

18-21 3 Years

22-23 2 Years

24 1 Year

25+ No Limit & Not-Entry Level if drafted from North America

25-27** 1 Year if drafted from Europe

No. All that does is determine the length of the contract that he's able to sign. It has nothing to do with him signing the contract. Generally speaking, you're unable to sign a binding contract under the age of 18... because you're a minor.

Now that he can buy cigarettes legally today might be a step back in his progress into being a pro....but he sure would look cool firing up a dart right before firing off some wristers at practice.

The smoking age has been raised to 21 in the US. And no, it wouldn't "look cool" if he fired up a cig.

Take it from someone who smoked them for 23 years, and wishes he never fired up the first one. Even if it's a joke, what a ridiculous comment.

There is no rule in the current CBA that player can´t sing his ELC before he is 18. He just must turned 18 before September 15th. That is a fact and you can check it out for yourself if you don´t believe me.

But what is most important now is that Bedard era has started!

No one said it was in the CBA, but contracts with minors(those UNDER 18) are generally not binding, and the player can leave that contract much of the time, without consequences. For Bedard, who was turning 18 shortly after the draft, it just made sense for both parties to wait a couple weeks.

The Puckpedia post you pulled that quote from was not in reference to whether they can sign under 18. I never said anything about the CBA, just that you were very clearly using that quote out of context.

I think players can be signed before 18 but if they are in the US/Canada, it’s just a bit cleaner for various child labor reasons to just wait until they are 18 unless they have a Jordan Staal like birthday where they bump right up against the deadline.

Do you think the main boards are more pissed that Bedard is a Hawk than they were when McDavid went to the Oilers?
