The last thread is beyond 1000 posts and it seems Mess has forgotten to create a new thread so I'll get it started for our pal. New year, new thread!

The goaltending has held up well. It's only January and of course the important thing will be to see if it holds up in the playoffs. So far, so good but not time to chalk it up as a W just yet (but hopefully we're on our way to that).

Here is an update on how the Leafs goalies have done so far and how some of the missed opportunities are doing.

Matt Murray
9-3-2
.920
2.44

Ilya Samsonov
11-3-0
.920
2.20

Jack Campbell
8-6-1
.876
3.90

Petr Mrazek
2-9-1
.881
4.13

Cam Talbot
10-9-1
.911
2.74

Frederik Andersen
5-3-0
.891
2.72

The Leafs team defense has really improved and they were able to win a ton of games with all of Muzzin. Brodie and Rielly out. That tough defensive play will obviously help the goaltending numbers. Lets hope they can keep it up. Happy 2023 to all of you. Hopefully an exciting year to come for our Leafs!

Just going to add some interesting defensive/goalie stats during the Matthews era.

Team defensive numbers and save% under Babcock start of 2017-dismissal (league ranking):
Shots Against: 28th in the NHL
Scoring Chances Against: 24th in the NHL
High Danger Chances Against: 19th in the NHL
xGA: 25th in the NHL
Team save%: 9th in the NHL

Team defensive numbers and save% under Keefe up until the end of last season (league ranking):
Shots Against: 11th in the NHL
Scoring Chances Against: 12th in the NHL
High Danger Chances Against: 6th in the NHL
xGA: 5th in the NHL
Team save%: 20th in the NHL

Team defensive numbers and save% this season (league ranking):
Shots Against: 5th in the NHL
Scoring Chances Against: 7th in the NHL
High Danger Chances Against: 6th in the NHL
xGA: 8th in the NHL
Team save%: 8th in the NHL

The Leafs were an absolutely horrible defensive team under Babcock and were carried by a prime Andersen and their scoring much of the time.

Once Keefe took over, team D had the biggest turnaround of any team in the league but injuries had hit Andresen hard and continued to do so the rest of his tenure with the Leafs. (he finally had a 6 month stretch of healthy hockey last season but has fallen back into how he looked with the Leafs again after another major injury) The best Leafs goalie since Keefe became coach has been, by far, Jack Campbell and it appears more and more that he was carried much of the time by the great team D in front of him. Team D numbers this season are pretty much the same as the rest of Keefe's tenure except we have much better quality of goaltending that is hopefully sustainable (and healthy). Murray is the first goalie with actual playoff chops to play for the team in forever and looks good in there too. Really excited for the playoffs.

Here's the GSAx (and GSAx/60) for the goalies in the OP so far:

Murray: +6.8 (+0.487)
Samsonov: +6.3 (+0.462)
Talbot: +2.7 (+0.135)
Andersen: -3.6 (-0.445)
Mrazek: -10.9 (-0.882)
Campbell: -11.1 (-0.733)

Post count hasn't been a thing for a while now.

Samsonov crashing back down to earth in a big way. Interesting to see how he bounces back - hasn't quite looked the same since coming back from injury.

Cautionary tale for those that were ready to anoint him last month. If you have time, use it.

Samsonov is screwing up basic fundamentals in this recent stretch. Unlike his calm collected play leading up to the Washington game, he's been giving out rebounds like candy, swimming around in his crease, cheating angles and giving up his short side too easily and is getting caught deep in his net often, making himself small. I'm not gonna press the panic button yet, but he needs to be better and fix these basic things.

Tough stretch .. Hopefully those two big saves in OT give him some confidence. Can't be too hard on yourself in a shootout.

If it's that simple and hopefully it is, Sanford should be able to fix this. Until then, Murray gets 65-70% of the starts and maybe more

I hope so but Samsonov does seem to lack that mental grit still. I'm not sure if it's something he can change but I hope the Leafs are throwing sports psychologists at him. He's far too gifted to be playing this bad and making simple mistakes like this

Neither goaltender is playing well and the strong team D is almost non existent now. At the moment Murray gets the slight edge.

Now, it is the offence that is being asked to pick up the slack and hopefully lead the way to victory more often than it might have been previously. The ebbs and flows of an 82 game season. Perhaps a slight edge to Murray right now, yes. I still wouldn't want to keep Samsonov idle for too long of a stretch though.

4 rough games in a row for Samsonov since he posted those back to back shutouts

Should be interesting to see if he can rebound.

At the end of the day it’s about the Leafs getting hot goaltending in the playoffs

I think we're being a bit more aggressive offensively/ less focused on team D

It's why goals are easier to come by as well.

We have played great team defense on occasion which we need to. Neither of these guys are Hasek but can make most saves if we help them like we've been doing.

We can't mind melt them like we have Jack and Freddy however

Sammy's reputation is an inconsistent goalie. His cold streak isn't much of a shocker. At the price we got him at, it's really not a big deal. He's done a lot of good for the Leafs so far, some bad games doesn't change that.

It changes things if you want to win
