If this city ever wants to be considered a major league city, much less, a hockey town, they should sell out every game when in a playoff race like they are now. It shouldn't matter who the opponent is. With that said I donated my tickets to a worthy cause a while back and will probably check out stub hub for a couple cheapies.

I agree with this point, though I can certainly understand why the city has soured on the team.

Could the ticket sales outlook for tomorrow's game against Detroit look any bleaker? Just sad, especially in the uppers.

Red Wings fans snapping up lower bowl:shakehead

Don't know if we should hope for a big walk-up crowd or not. Team gets stage fright when big crowds show up. However, the game is a late start, on national TV and essentially a playoff game, so this is a type of game that should attract more casual fans.

General statement, to no one in particular:

Imagine if half the people who ***** about attendance on here actually made it to a game once in awhile.

I never let empty seats ruin my fun at the games, after all I am usually able to upgrade most nights, but to go from such an awesome atmosphere as the NYR game the other night to another ho-hum "14,000" Tuesday game is disheartening to see. This market has so much potential that still has to be recaptured. I thought this year would be the year for that, but there is obviously still a lot of work to do.

I'm willing to give benefit of the doubt and assume that most on here who live within a couple hours of NWA do attend games once in a while. And I would hope "out-of-towner" fans aren't going to ***** about attendance when they aren't part of the solution. I have seen a couple locals mention they don't have financial means to attend games to often, but other than that, I have a hard time believe there are a contingent of people on HF sitting in their homes in the Columbus 'burbs rarely going to games and *****ing about attendance on HF.

Seems more a choir preaching to the choir thing to me.

It might be smaller crowd, but I doubt those there will be ho-hum. Should be a great atmosphere. Casual fans will be skeptical until actually get to playoffs. Can't blame them. They came out for a sellout on Friday night and see a loss and then the team loses again on Sunday and are outside of playoff picture. Can't blame the skeptics thinking "same 'ole jackets".

Hit the nail on the head here. I mean the 1-11-1 record in sellouts is particuarly damaging to building a fan base. Cause if there's one thing that brings the casual fan back its winning when they're in attendance.

The CBJ marketing department needs to actually start marketing again. Having a Tim Hortons family pack once a week isn't really cutting it. This is the only area that makes me miss Doug MacLean. That guy could sell water to a fish. I can't count the number of different promotions that occurred under his watch. Having JD talk about "t-shirts out of a Gatling gun" 72 times per game isn't terribly awe-inspiring.

I think the Student Rush campaign really needs to be revamped. CBJ should be much more visible on the OSU campus. The Crew have been really trying to tap into that demographic.

What marketing department? I'd forgotten we even have one of those. The team doesn't have to go to the level of the Clippers with giveaways every night and food/drink specials every game, but for goodness sakes try putting some effort into it. I can count on one hand the number of giveaways we've gotten this year. Yearbook, T Shirt, maybe a rally towel one night, and that's pretty much it. Come on CBJ, get creative and at least try to get the people back in the door. Winning helps, sure, but you have to try.

I really think the CBJ marketing department thought the move to the Eastern Conference meant the tickets would sell themselves. In their defense, who would've thought barely 14,000 would care to see Detroit two weeks ago?

I'm also a Reds STH. Dare I mention that the Reds have a promotion for darn near every game, and sponsors are putting their names on all kinds of products & giveaways. Just seen on FB that May the 3rd, get a star wars themed t-shirt. Creative ideas.

Maybe CBJ marketing has figured out that passing out freebies doesn't work?
Again I can just speak for one person but I've never bought a signle ticket to a single game for a freebie - not a bobble head, not a t-shirt, etc.
I mean if they show that a promotion costs $2.50/person (just assume a cheap t-shirt like in past) * 14000 in attendance = $35,000 just in costs for the fans who will show up. Their calculation is easy, how many additional fans did it add (more precisely additional ticket and spending revenue from a comparable game) and then see if atttendance picks up after that game. If it adds 1000 more seats sold * 35/average cost = $35000 revenue - $37,500 cost (15000 *2.50) = Loss of $2500.
More prcisely if they can get FSN or Ohio healthcare to put up $37,500 for a promotion could they make more money by putting their banner up in the arena for a few games?
Marketing is a lot more than give aways. Bottom line is the CBJ attendance is down but I get the feeling they are doing less discounting of tickets - so big thing to ask about is revenue (ticket sales) up or down? I think they got a lot of feedback from STH about discounting too many games (you know paying $70/ticket and having folks beside/around you saying they got tickets for $25. That was something IDWT was big on - he would give players contracts and part of deal was the player had to buy a certain number of tickets (discounted) to each/certain games and give to charities - hence attendance increased. I'm guessing that type of behavior was part of his contract (bonuses for attendance) or from ownership (needed attenadance up) or Leage/NHL standards for attendance to get profit sharing.
Attendance is important and you don't want that number to lower - but key point is ticket revenue.

I would disagree... look at Reds attendance on the bobblehead and other premium giveaway days. Friday night fireworks is also popular.

Also, your math just accounts for 1 day. Get the fans inside the Arena, show them a competitive team, and a great time, and they are likely to come back again and again.

Marketing is a combination of many things. It includes winning, the perception of a valued arena in-game experience, promotions, costs, etc.

Ditto. That's just stupid. Any promotion should center around the price of the actual ticket (not the Tim Horton Value Pack nonsense). For the people using the Reds as an example of promotions thats fine--but keep in mind the list price of 99% of their available tickets are 60 dollars or less. HUGE DIFFERENCE were CBJ tix in lower bowl are double that (around $120 dollars).

The group I'd be targeting would be students (looking at you OSU). Those are young impressionable people who could be fans for life (if they stay in the area upon graduating and getting a good job). I'd practically give away tix to them upon confirmation of a Student ID.

My question is this...if attendance and season ticket sales are so horrible, why am I not able to get as close as i would like when I bought mine? If you check the website there isn't alot of available season ticket spots
