"Well, we knew we needed to rebuild. We were an older team at that time with some really good young players. It's not like we didn't have anything on our team, but they were young. We felt getting it to turnover, we draft [Cale] Makar and then we get a [Bowen] Byram, but we had [Nathan] MacKinnon, Landeskog and Erik Johnson, who wanted to be part of the rebuild

This right there is the reason why EJ will play next year if we don't win the cup this year. Sakic won't trade him after he stayed for the rebuild while he was in his prime and UFA because he believed in the young guys. That'd be quite a betrayal to keep him for the bad years and trade him before winning the cup.

100% agree. EJ retires an Av at the end of this contract, or after a cup, whichever comes first.

I think you underestimate Joe Sakic and his ability to separate business from friendship.

If Erik Johnson is going to hurt this team with his contract and play, Sakic will find a way to move him. Even if that means buying him out and then re-signing him at a much, much lower cap hit.

I think the moving/buying out EJ ship sailed last summer and vanished into the sunset when Sakic moved both Barron and Helleson at the deadline.

Johnson is wildly overpaid but Sakic will probably just say "hey, this guy scored 19 points with a +17 rating. He's good in the locker room and we like him on the PK".

Wouldn't even shock me if EJ is given an extension when his contract is done (obviously something in the ~$1M range).

Buying him out and signing him to a league minimum deal makes the most sense. His $2m buyout would be completely covered by the cap rising $2m to $83.5m in 2023/24.

Some people forget that NHL players are still humans and not only assets.

Looking at this lineup suggests to me age was not the prominent problem here.

Exactly. Sorry, doesn't matter how loyal the guy is, if he's no longer contributing at the level you need him to contribute at, then it's time to move on. GMs have to be a little ruthless at times. IMO they get into trouble most often when they make things too personal. Lacroix did this too when he held grudges against any player who didn't sign their RFA contracts right away. Burke hampered himself with sentimental crap continually.

The one guy who don't GAF is Lamoriello. That guy would fire his grandson if it meant getting closer to winning another Cup.

I don't mind that Joe is someone who wants to do right by players. You can tell he does, given he went out of his way to tell Alex Tanguay he was trading him. But there comes a time where he has to do what's right for the team. I think he can, and he will, but there have been instances where he's been a little too loyal to certain players.

Oh shit, Troy Renck's Twitter got hacked by some bullshit outfit trying to hock animated dog NFTs.
Why doesn't anyone hack Dater's account? Anything written by any hacker would seem believable for at least a little bit. Someone could be selling overpriced towels and we'd all think well Lyft probably isn't seeing any demand today.
