This is a really good article - I didn’t realize Bally Sports filed for bankruptcy. This has huge huge implications for all RSNs - Bally is the biggest one of them all.

Yep, the dominoes starting to fall. All that are left are going to be team-owned networks and we know how those get treated by the broadcasters. Its funny Altitude is claiming Comcast wants to put them out of business so they can take over the network but why would Comcast want to own this anymore? Pretty obvious this is going to a pay for the content if you want it world. Its probably something like $200-250/season for everything with no blackouts and $150/season if you just want to follow one team similar to what they have with MLB and NFL.

If Bally can't even survive, Altitude is toast. I mean I think the writing is on the wall for that, but Bally not surviving is pretty incredible.

I have no idea what's gonna happen with these RSN's. Eventually I think they have to be absorbed by all of these other streaming outfits somehow. Mergers and acquisitions are probably what need to happen, but you've got all these super rich owners like Kroenke that own Altitude and I can't imagine that he's gonna sell the network for cheap. But then if he doesn't, it just bleeds cash forever.

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I (unfortunately) haven’t been able to follow everything as much as I used to. Is Mars V now working for Dater at Col Hockey Now? Interesting and cool for Mars if true.

Funny thing is, now that I've cut the cord, I find myself flipping through endless generic exactly looking the same movies on netflix. There's 500 movies available and not a damn thing worth watching. They started making content instead of purchasing or making shows. Content is not entertainment, at least not for me anymore. Just about to cut all streaming except for Disney Plus...gotta keep my hockey fix and the wife's Marvel fix satiated.
If you are looking for movies, HBO Max is the best one, imo.

He took over for Dater.
Thanks…….No shit. Good for him, I always liked his takes, I’ll have to check out ColHockeyNow out more

What is Dater doing now?

If Bally can't pay licencing fees, it will have a big impact on hockey revenue and the cap.
This is certainly the nail in the coffin for next year's cap... maybe the following season if this drags on. Longer-term, the NHL needs to be aggressive and snatch up the rights so they can stream without restrictions.

I mean...there's just no way, right?

How is this guy still alive?

One day Dater might learn this isn’t a NHL problem, it is a RSO problem.
He's just repeating the same talking points that Keefe, Moser, et.al have been repeating.

Not excusing it, mind you, but there's just an extreme lack of understanding the reality of the situation from the people who excitedly lap up what they're selling.

The Keefe and Moser group at least have an excuse, their livelihoods depend on Altitude continuing to be a going concern. But Dater should clearly see their bias and also understand how the NHL operates.

FTR I think it is quite absurd the Altitude is on the local cable, but at this point, the blame is really more on Altitude at this point. Comcast doesn't need Altitude to survive in the market and Altitude is unwilling to take any scraps they can get. This is a story as old as time in business. One party has all the leverage, one has none.

Don't get me wrong, I will have sympathy for the Altitude Sports Entertainment crew if Altitude goes under.

I don't necessarily know what the answer is, I suspect that someone like McGahey will be fine because I don't anticipate radio going away anytime soon (weird to say lol); but I remember McNab and Kelly calling games when the Avs were on Fox Sports: Rocky Mountain...so I guess I'd just assume that if RSO's go away, and Altitude goes under/goes away, then each team could hire their own PBP & Color Commentator and utilize them for the NHL's purpose.

Like, let's say all RSO's go away, or somehow the NHL gets the memo and creates their own streaming service without blackouts, then each team can just utilize their own people for the home/away broadcasts.

The answer is sadly, just take what you can get at this point. It has been two years (IIRC) and they are shooting themselves in the foot by not taking the scraps of revenue they can get. In the end, they won't survive unless Stan wants to foot the bill forever.

I understand and empathize with being on the losing side of negotiations. It has happened to me many times, but sometimes, a bad deal is better than no deal. In a dying industry, they need to accept that.

Wasn't sure where to put this, figured here worked fine.
We've all known that the Avs suck at hitting anything in the lower rounds, but seeing it spelled out like this is pretty bleak.
Really makes you appreciate what Sakic was able to do in winning the Cup.
