Moser complaining about every time a player falls or gets hit that there is not penalty os by far the most annoying thing about him… and that is saying a lot. As he’s annoying af about scissoring.
I’ll say there are also times (not as often obviously) both Moser and Rycroft point out the Avs sometimes getting away with an infraction.

Yeah they do sometimes, but like you said, not as often. If Moser had it his way there would be 20ish power plays a game, but interference while on the power play wouldn’t exist.

They say familiarity breeds contempt, and McGahey is getting there for me.
I've always preferred him over Moser, mostly for his voice, but he's abusing that gift by coming up with the dumbest catchphrases as he tries to carve out a niche. They're mostly horrible or cliché or both.
Moser runs phrases into the ground as well, but I guess I just expect him to be lame. With McGahey I had hope, but that's fading with each passing attempt by him to find his personality.
I'm trending that way as well, but I can appreciate that the stuff he does come up with tends to be much more original and enjoyable than most in his position are capable of. He's certainly more creative than a Randy Moller-type, who somehow carved out a following by lazily throwing out random movie quotes after every goal.

My biggest issue with him is the homerism that is pretty standard for all the Altidudes. He'll bitch about the Avs not getting this call or that call but when I watch the game replay most of what he's bitching about is fairly inocuous.

Meh, that's an exaggeration to say the least. I'm not gonna sit here and say the Altitude boys ain't homers. Of course they are, but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as y'all are implying.

In fact they were pretty critical of the Avs' play last night and against Washington.

Maybe slightly… but I’d bet there are at least 5 instances a period on average where Moser says something about a penalty not being called.

I haven’t said they can’t be critical at times… Moser is just a whiny guy. Complains about a lot of things and penalties tend to be very high on that list for him.

I could do without hearing "scissoring" and "pool cued" 15 times per game. That'd be nice.

I'm not a big fan of Ryker either tbh. He complains less than Moser but also just isn't very good.

He's positively tame compared to Jack Edwards.

I know some on here won't agree but to me the ideal scenario would be to have McGahey move into the TV booth alongside Moser, not sure who takes the radio reins in that scenario but I'm sure they'd find someone.

I was going to say they should hire Jerry Schemmel (the best in the business) since he's outta work but I just read he's back with the Rockies. Why'd they even let him go in the first place?

I will say the bad news about Ryker moving into color commentary is that we don't get telestrator breakdowns of key plays like we did before. He's also toned down the harsh rhetoric, which, to me, was a huge reason why he was so good and took over full-time duties as analyst. He never spared the rod when the Avs were playing shitty.

Have to admit, I always liked McNab, but I'm a ton more appreciative of what he brought to the table now.

Ryker used to be great in studio. He was usually the only one that would take the team to task for playing like ass.

As a color guy he's acted more like McNab in that he'll gush over players even when they haven't played well in weeks. I truly wonder if he's in the mindset that he's just a steward of McNab's chair so he wants to just be as much like McNab as he can instead of doing his own thing.

I mean Edwards is just a clown. To me, Moser is clearly bottom 5 in the PbP across the league. McGahey would be too, but I'd slightly prefer him to Moser.

I think Ryker is really trying to find his way in that spot and it is clear Moser and him don't have chemistry at this point. I'm not sure Ryker will ever be great in that role, but I understand giving him a run. I wouldn't mind the Avs sniping Cohen from the Hawks personally.

Pete is sorely missed... he had all the right pieces in the role.

BTW I dunno if people noticed but they announced the departures of two longtime producers on Altitude the last few weeks. I have no idea what precisely those people did but it sure seemed like both of them were fairly important to day-to-day operations. Don't know if that's a trend or not but I found it kinda curious.

Agreed about Moser's homerism.
Sure, you expect the hometown booth to be a little biased, but it's an easy line to cross between rooting for the boys and feeling persecuted whenever something goes awry.
Moser crosses that line too often for my tastes. If there's even a penalty on the play or if he's got the right team it's been called on. I mean, really. It happens more often than the Avs get a Too Many Men penalty.

The gal (can't remember her name off the top of my head) jumped to DNVR the very next day

I was really hoping Footer was going to take over when he made his first appearance on the show after Pete passed. I think what the broadcast is missing mostly is credibility. They need a vet to help lead the way, but how can they attract vet talent with their ongoing battles with Comcast? I have a feeling that Altitude is winding down and will be gone in a year or two at most. And while I'm optimistic the overall presentation will probably improve (especially technically with replays during the games) I will be sad.

Unless Stan wants to keep footing the bill, it is probably likely they'll be gone. It'll suck too...

But don't worry Footer will be back in 6 months.

I dunno, do they really want or need a "veteran talent?" I don't have any huge issues with Johnny Malkin or Eric Lacroix. They've obviously pretty green but they're catching up. Footer was good and as Henchy says, strong possibility he's back next year.

Also, if they need to tap more former Av players, Liles is head of the Alumni Association. I'm honestly surprised Rick Berry hasn't made an appearance. Few players fell in love with the area faster than he did.

I don't even hate Moser and co. I actually choose the Altitude feed for every game. I don't want to hear other team homer commentary. I want the Sea Eagles edition of the Avs play.

On the Moser front though he's not all that bad. Apart from getting player names wrong, mixing players up, talking about seagulls, being slow behind the play, missing plays completely, getting the wrong call, scissoring, squirting it through, pool cueing and other fun sayings he's fine.
He has gotten better at one thing for sure — he’s learned not to mention icing any time the puck heads the other way. It felt like it was the one rule he could identify clearly. He’s cut waaaay back on that. Canadian broadcasters rarely mention icing.

Also he’s been using “struggle bus” a lot lately which is to me an urban term and sounds ridiculous in a hockey broadcast.

I’ve been watching Altitude for so long that I don’t even think about how bad it can be, but Keefer has finally grown on me and the only one I coolant handle was Julie B, because she always looked awkward and like someone said, doesn’t seem to know anything about the sport. Katie G is solid, I hope she sticks around.

I don’t hear him much since I only get the tv version but he sounds like a Simpsons broadcaster caricature. A real try-hard.

McGahey's got a great voice and delivery, I'll admit he does lean on catchphrases a little too much. Mike Haynes once said in an interview he actively avoided them.

I called him out on Twitter because he told me he would use "Vladdy, Vladdy, Boombalatty!" at my suggestion and then when Kamenev scored, he forgot. And now, we'll never get the chance again. :thumbd:

Does anyone know where he is now? I can't believe how bad he took that demotion. Completely disappeared from the public eye, no comment on anything.

He was only asked to split the TV/radio broadcast with Moser IIRC. He didn't take it well at all.

I remember he put out a demo reel on YouTube not long after he quit, but I guess that never amounted to anything.

That's interesting about him actively avoiding Moser. Probably thought it was an insult to be replaced by him at the time...and he must've burned the bridges pretty badly considering that Altitude never made mention of him again.

I was hoping to see him on the McNab thing but I forgot how acrimonious the exit was.

He put a reel up of his work somewhere, or so I read, that's it.

Honestly I don't necessarily blame him for not going with it.

Haynes put this on youtube shortly after he left Altitude:

"This is the Emmy Award winning submission for 2018 Heartland Regional Emmy Awards."

I don't think it helped him get a new job.

This is a really good article - I didn’t realize Bally Sports filed for bankruptcy. This has huge huge implications for all RSNs - Bally is the biggest one of them all.
