News Article: Colorado Avalanche Media Coverage Part VI

Wow...... the title of this thread is Colorado Avalanche Media Coverage so I came here to see if I could find out why the NHL Network I am viewing via my Comcast Xfinity home cable subscription always blacks out Avalanche games.

And I end up finding a protracted political Elon Musk Twitter combat battlefield that seems to have zero moderation?

OK. Back to the main point........

I reside within the NHL's Colorado Avalanche viewing area so am subject to the NHL's blackout rules. I also realize Comcast doesn't carry Altitude. I also know there's a big dispute going on there and it likely won't be resolved. So my work around is ESPN+ and VPN. Fortunately, most network carried games (TNT, ESPN, NBC) are national telecasts and not usually blacked out. But Avalanche games on NHL Network are consistently blacked out. (On Xfinity cable and/or streaming services.)

Does anyone know exactly why?

I'm sure some are going to suggest switching to Dish or some other Altitude carrying provider. That's fine and I'm exploring that. But I am confounded when my Xfinity on line program guide lists the Avs game as being on the NHL Network yet I receive substitute programming?

So, anyone else experiencing this within the following critieria:
Xfinity cable subscription with NHL Network included,
Service address is within the NHL's Colorado Avalanche assigned viewing area?
Bill is paid in full

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Please realize that talking to a Comcast service rep about this is like trying to convince a 13th Century monk that the world is a sphere using a foreign language.

If the game is shown on Altitude and NHLN, it will be blacked out for Comcast/Xfinity and Dish subscribers. It might be part of a national broadcast, but Altitude will still block the game locally. Comcast and Dish will only get nation games that are exclusive to ESPN, ABC and TNT.

Thanks. So in a nutshell, it's the Altitude/Comcast war of attrition and I'm caught in the middle as a subscriber.

Short interpretation then, Altitude owns the feed that the NHL Network is using and Altitude has control over who or what channel can display/broadcast it.

Bottom line, I need to subscribe to a service that carried Altitude.

Also forgot nationally, it's ABC and not NBC any longer. Thanks for the reminder. My brain fart.

Yep. This whole thing is extremely tiring. I got sick of streaming the game and ended up just getting that Evoca TV. It's okay and it works, but the quality isn't the best. The box is slow and installing an old school TV antenna on top of my house was annoying. It's insane the whole dispute has lasted this long. I just wish it would end already.

Yeah. I live behind the hogback here in Jeffco and the HD signal over the airwaves is limited. Even with an antenna in my attic.

Direct TV is just as expensive as Comcast. And I will lose some of the (very) few channels that I actually enjoy via cable.

Fubo might turn out to be the best alternative but I'm having hard time convincing myself that paying another $70 per month to watch an occasional Avs game on NHL Network is worth it. Might as well go out to a sports bar instead.

Just get rid of Comcast and pay for Fubo. I got rid of Comcast back in 2020 (seems like a million years ago now) and streamed the games illegally. I got tired of that and signed up for Fubo recently, and it works fine. Got rid of YouTubeTV for Fubo, since they're basically the same, though I don't really like Fubo's interface/layout.

Yeah I was confused too, but on Twitter it's showing as verified.

Seems it is for some people and not for others... clearly a bit buggy.

If it is treated as other 'impersonation' accounts, it'll be suspended. How timely will be interesting. Also how many people are going to pay $8 for these jokes as it fades?

The fact remains that the very thing everyone warned Elon would happen...happened.
The fact is also there that people abused the prior system with fake accounts (many of which had checkmarks), and this was resolved with a suspended account within an hour. Much faster than those other fake accounts were taken down in times past (you can still find some out there from last deadline).

How this goes past the initial lolz in a few weeks will likely give a better barometer of how this is working.

Roku launches new sports hub on TV's and streaming players. I wonder if we will be able to watch Avs live games just by having this Roku device installed. Would be awesome.
