No surprise there. Dude is going to kill it.

Yeah PK's is gonna crush it.

He'll be ESPN's Biz. Guys like them are just natural talents in front of the camera.

I hope they're paying Biz accordingly too, because he bascially runs that whole show. Everyone defers to him, even McHugh. And because he's so experienced with his podcast now, he knows how to bring everyone into the conversation, and set them up, like he does with Tocchet and Anson and everyone.

I remember last year during the playoffs, there was a woman on the panel (I forgot who) and the guys were just dominating the conversation back and forth and ignoring her, including McHugh, and Biz was the one guy that intentionally brought her into the conversation by specifically asking her how she felt about the topic. He's become more of a pro than everyone else at TNT.

Regardless of what folks thought of Biznasty the player, there is no denying he really is a force in sports media. I mean, he's a freaking natural and a naturally likable personality. He's also really toned down what some would call his rougher edges and knows how to keep it funny, edgy and family friendly on TNT.

Can't wait for PK to get going.

Hockey really needs enjoyable personality to grow in popularity in the US. Like it or not, to reach the younger demographics and really try to grow the league in popularity, they need to be entertaining and somewhat flashy. I think with the personalities TNT and ESPN are bringing in and with their reach simply just resonating with younger demographics much more than whatever the f*** NBC did for a decade are going to help with growth.

Sucks that they removed it. It was JJ talking about how it was with the Avs last year. Greatest team in the cap era, no clique inside the locker room, team was all business from day 1. He loved it here and felt lucky to be a small part of it.
Thanks for recapping it @Balthazar!

Every single time his mouth is open it seems like there are just positive vibes coming out of it. I've worked with very few people like that in life and they have all left an incredible mark on myself and our organizations. JMFJ seems like a dude you'd want to keep tabs on when he officially hangs them up.

Last day of The Athletic's $1 (or 1 other money) / month for 12 months deal. It was valid for return customers so I returned. I didn't really read it enough last time, but I can't possibly read it this little.

At a buck? Yeah, I'd probably be there still. They finally raised my rate to like $70 and I quit. They offered to give me another year at like $25 so I took it, but when it renewed they charged the original $70. *LMAO* Got it fixed and then just set the subscription to cancel. It sucks, but my account will go dark right as we move into the playoffs next spring.

Altitude wants paid like other RSOs, but they just aren’t profitable. The sooner the NHL can buy them all out, the better.

Are any RSO's profitable? Legit question because I thought they were all more or less on life support.

I'm starting to wonder why Stan is trying to force an RSO to work in such an openly hostile market. If I was him, I'd be doing cost projections on what he could get for leasing the rights to say anyone other than NBC (owned by Comcast) and folding the channel; or seriously consider rebranding Altitude. Instead of a sports channel, adopt a different model that people will want, and more importantly get you back on Comcast at a good deal. Whatever model that is, be it syndicated MASH episodes, PBS programming, or consider joining forces with Denver U for a college run cable network...but whatever it is, you also happen to have premier live sports on top of it and get all those tasty advertising dollars associated with it.

I know some of the execs at some of the former Fox Sports ones, and they they were mixed bags when you talk about regions. Over the years those kept getting consolidated to minimize losses as a whole until they eventually sold to Bally… no idea how Bally is doing (though rumors they want to sell to MLB and NHL exist).

Altitude is likely profitable simply because they don’t have to bid for the local rights and are basically owned by the Avs/Nuggets. That makes them more sustainable as a sole enterprise. Problem is there is just very little RSO demand to national carriers. Easy place to trim and get some excess profits from places like Comcast and Dish. Been happening for 15-20+ years now. I dont personally think Altitude will be around 10 years from now. NHL will seize the opportunity to secure local rights and the NBA side will splinter elsewhere.

Basically buy a local broadcast channel. The only issue is that gets you Denver/Boulder, you still have to buy or make distribution deals in other markets if you want coverage.

My guess is the NHL will go the MLS way and offer a full package deal with no blackouts for those willing to pay for it. And it will be just like the deal they didn't want to do, charge viewers $10-15/month to watch games, which is what Comcast wanted to do by putting them on a special tier. Not exactly a win for Stan and family but with most of these sports networks falling apart and losing all leverage there will be at least 10 teams like the Avs in the coming years so might as well be ready for it when the current deals allow for it.

The NHL is working towards that. They have been trying to buy Bally Sports since the that deal closed with the rumors picking up since September. I know the MLB and NHL were working together to create a bid (I think the NBA would be involved, but I don't recall them in that bid). Which would give the NHL ownership of 12 teams' local rights where they could eliminate the blackout for those teams. Then it would be about the random mixture else where with NBC, MSG, AT&T, Root and Altitude in the US (AT&T and Root have had talks with MLB and NHL too). I can't see Sportsnet or TSN giving up the Canadian local coverage, but the blackouts wouldn't really apply in the US (Canada likely still would). MSG in the US is probably the most difficult for the NHL grab.

I sent a message to Altitude asking if they would make any accommodations for Evoca subscribers if it shuts down and I got a response saying we encourage you to investigate other options such as Fubo or Direct. In other words, the answer from KSE is as always, screw you customer.

Yep. I don't know why they won't let us subscribe directly to them. I would gladly pay 10 - 15 bucks a month to just get it directly from them. I'm sure somewhere along the Walmart branches exists some sort of streaming structure in place, that they could easily piggyback off of.
