I don't see why the assumption has to be that a guy has to grow up an Avs fan in order to be a competent beat writer covering them.
I'd probably argue against them being a fan... keeps bias out of the job.

Someone in the state if Colorado that has some background covering pro hockey.

Would they hire some kid from Vermont who’s covering high school hockey there to be the Broncos’ beat writer?
So Adrian?

On one hand, if he puts any effort into it, he's better than Chambers. But you're not wrong, this could be frustrating if he's trying to learn the sport on the job. Maybe times are so bad in the paper business that "hockey knowledge" is one more thing DP would have to pay for?

I don't get this "learning the game on the fly" argument at all. Has Peter Baugh made some grossly incompetent error regarding hockey and/or NHL rules? Did Ryan Clark? The answer is no. If anyone continually makes such errors, it's avowed fans and veteran hockey scribes Adrian Dater and Mike Chambers.

If they got the job but don't have any experience covering hockey, we should trust that as a professional, they'll do the necessary research.

That the beat writer is a fan or not is not important. Being competent is what is important. With time if the person puts in the time and effort required by the job he will most likely become a fan anyway as he becomes invested in the organization. At that point it will become important that he keeps the bias out of his work as much as possible.

Steve Simmons has really worked out for Toronto being from Toronto and all.
He's 1 out of ~50 journalists covering the Leafs for a traditional media in Toronto. They can afford to have a few bad ones.

How many do they have in Denver to cover the Avs outside of that one for the DP? Zero?

Really? 50? You don't need to exaggerate that much.

I don't get your point even without the copious amounts of hyperbole. Are you saying the DP should've snagged someone from DNVR or MHS like Aarif Deen or our very own @The Mars Volchenkov?

Yes.

PS: If you combine everyone covering the Leafs on a daily basis from TV/Radio/Newspapers they are probably close to 50. Only in TSN they are like 5+.

In Montreal they are easily 30+

I think both Ryan Clark and Peter Baugh turned out well. Who knows if this kid will be a good hockey writer, but he does have a cool name. Sounds like the name of a hitman in a Tarantino Neo-Western or something.

Okay, well, that's not gonna happen in a midlevel market like Denver. They don't even have that many covering the Broncos.
Yea I know, I was just making the point that one bad journalist is nothing when you have so many.

FTR I'm not saying the kid will be bad and IMO Baugh is doing a good job. I just wish the Avs were more popular locally I guess. Having the chance to cover a professional team, to travel with them, interact with the players and all that stuff should be a dream job for many journalists in my book.

Oh I'd say Simmons is not nothing. That two-bit hack has one of the biggest platforms in the sport and regularly uses it to spew his drivel.

Anyway, that's a different discussion for a different day.

As for their popularity, hockey is MUCH more popular now than it was when I was growing up, I can guarantee you that much. They'll never be on the same level as the Broncos, which is fine. But also, refusing to spend a dime on the team from 2008-2013 on or off the ice and the current TV impasse have definitely taken a toll.

Anyway, I'm largely fine with the coverage the team currently has. The Athletic, MHS, Locked On, DNVR, the Gazette, and the DP (Kizsla and his hot take garbage aside) are supplying me with more than enough analysis and what not.

I get the sense that the Avs really don’t want the media at all in their business and only want to give any “insider” access to folks affiliated with Altitude. Ditto for the Nuggets. Covering the Avs definitely doesn’t seem glorious and I’d venture to guess there’s a lot of “yeah you can cover us and talk to players/coaches but you cant do X, Y or Z.“ It’s changed a lot since the early 2000’s.
