Crazy to think that we acquired Blackwood for only a 6th and now he is the main part of a deal that is netting us a 2nd. Good job by Grier.

The most valuable asset in the deal, the ‘main part’ of it, was Colorado unloading the Georgiev contract for the rest of this year.

That’s the difference between Blackwood for a 6th and Blackwood for a 2nd. They wouldn’t have gotten a second if they refused to take back Georgiev.

What a weird trade.

Avs sure know about forwards but they seem to suck when it comes to understanding goaltending.

The Annunen for Wedgewood deal was horrible.

But this is way worse. To give up a 2nd and Kovalenko to basically get a goalie that’s at best on par with Georgiev (at worse Blackwood is usually injured)?

Wow
If you think Blackwood is on par with Georgiev, you're the one who doesn't know goaltending

God we're getting Georgiev, aren't we.

For about a year and a half he was the best goalie I have ever seen in a Devils uniform not named Brodeur or Schneider. He had no business winning anything behind those porous teams, but he did.

Wheels fell off after Covid, but I always held out hope he'd make a comeback. Maybe this is it!
Didn't covid coincide with a nasty foot injury for Blackwood?

Why are the 5th round picks in there? Did the Sharks’ analyst really go “the value is almost there, but we really need another 5th this year instead of 2027”

A late 2nd for maybe the best goalie/goalie contract on the market seems like an iffy return to me.

I also don't rate 2nd round picks and think they're the most overrated asset in hockey.
Again, what were you expecting? More likely than not that 2nd round pick will help the Sharks acquire a more useful player than Blackwood. Top-4 defensemen go for two 2nds all the time.

I think the biggest thing the sharks get out of this is a drop in the standings and increase in grabbing Schaefer. Blackwood has been legitimately good- 16th in sv% among starters and he’s earned it behind a shitty defense. I’d have wanted a 1st to move him at this point in the season. Ultimately a 2nd is nice, and 2026 may be a better draft so I’m cool with that, but not sure we needed to do this now. Let Celebrini, Smith, and Eklund have a bit more a taste of ‘winning’; winning is relative in SJ, but you know what I mean.

One other thing, is Kovalev good or just a guy?

Blackwood is in good form. I’m not convinced he’s a good goalie for a team with contender ambitions. At the very least, this is another huge gamble by the Avs on this position.

Kovalenko at the moment is a fine bottom six player but nothing worth writing home about. He’s been getting less and less run with the forward group getting healthier, was down to about 10 minutes per game. Only a rookie but also 25 so not sure there is a ton of upside. He will be more useful in your bottom six than featherweights like Gushchin or AAAA tweener types. Don’t expect big upside though.
