Outside of actually goaltending performance, the other big piece here is the Avs getting rid of someone that wasn't a good fit. He had some outbursts when things weren't going well and other players didn't seem to like him much, along with some statements from management.

- Him and Rantanen got into it verbally during a game, with Mikko coming up to him and telling him "I'll f***ing kill you"

- Last year during a post game interview, Toews called out some players who thought they were playing better than they were, most were pretty certain this was about RyJo and Georgiev

- This year, Newcomer de Haan had words for Georgiev after a couple bad goals

- Bednar Mentioned Wedgewood being a breath for fresh air attitude-wise

- Today, CMac mentioned that the Annunen and Georgiev trades were "home runs" in terms of team chemistry and fit.

So even if Blackwood isn't a big upgrade over Georgiev, the locker room should see some good effects from this trade.
Don't forget about when George slashed malinski for screening him on a goal

just pasing by to say Im glad Georgiev is not in the Avs anymore. Bednar is probably crying right now in the corner, but I dont care. Ill be able to watch games again without that lingering fear that we may suffer 4 goals in 7 shots midway through the first period in any given game. phew

also, last time the Avs won a Cup they had a Johnson duo on D. now theyll have a Wood duo on goal... hmmm :sarcasm:

I'm a little confused at people who don't get why the Sharks did this now. The answer is simple:

Colorado needs starting goalie help now. This is not a playoff team looking to shore itself up. This is a hopeful playoff team that needs to fix its biggest issue before the fact that they basement-ass goaltending snowballs and costs them enough points to slip out of a tenuous playoff position. Teams at the deadline can compete for limited assets and drive the prices up on rentals of scoring forwards or depth d-men or whatever because it's just tinkering around the edges of the roster.

If Colorado waits to fix its starting goalie problem until March it'll be too late to make a difference. So the value of a starting goalie will never be higher than it is now when it can make the most difference. Given that, it's no surprise that Colorado would make that move and no surprise that the Sharks would pounce on it because this is the best price they're gonna get on a goalie whose contract expires next summer.

Actually??
Ironically, Blackwood thrives when he's hung out to dry. Like Tomas Vokoun of old.
God I love the previous generation of goaltenders. Vokoun, Kiprusoff, Nabokov, Miller, Luongo.. so many high end entertaining ones.

Scott Wedgewood, Mackenzie Blackwood, and Miles Wood, all drafted by New Jersey and under contract to Colorado. Who would have guessed?

But for 1988 pick Bob Woods, who never made it to the big show, that pretty much clears New Jersey draft picks out of the Woods.

I don't think Grier got very good value in the Karlsson, Burns, Meier or Hertl trades, but they made a lot of strategic sense and he was somewhat handcuffed. I think the trades this last offseason and this have been good. You can see how he's building the team right now and I think its a good strategy.

Karlsson, Meier and Hertl turned into Dickinson, Granlund, Muhkamadulin, Musty, Zetterlund, Askarov, and some later picks. That's great value given where the team was contract wise. It also set them up to draft first overall last year,
