Confirmed with Link: [Col/Chi/Car] Rantanen (50% by Chicago), Hall, Nils Juntorp to Car - Drury, Necas, 2nd, 4th to Avs, 3rd round pick to Chicago

I have a wire tap on Ahos phone and just overheard his call this am with Rantanen:

hei ja tervetuloa joukkoomme. nyt kun muodollisuudet ovat poissa liiketoiminnasta... sinun on parasta oppia tarkistamaan hidas vanha hirvi tai laitan cappuccinosi laksatiivilla.
I'm Finnish and can confirm every word is Finnish.

Especially cappuccino and laksatiivi, very old proto-Uralic words.

Will be interesting to see the ice time Rantanen gets here in Carolina.

He was averaging 22:30 per game in Colorado. Aho is getting 20:03 this season, but Aho kills penalties, Rantanen does not. I imagine he'll probably match Aho's ice time at even strength & the PP, which is about 18:15 total per game. Which if that remains, Rantanen's ice time is getting cut by about 20% coming here. 20% ice time cut, he's likely no longer the perennial 100+ pt player we think we're acquiring.

Our top line should turn into a true top line with Mikko incoming. Hopefully that means we'll see Aho + Rantanen closer to that 22+ minute mark per game like Mackinnon & Rantanen do in Colorado.

I mean the problem in Colorado was that they had to run Mackinnon& Rantanen to the ground during the regular season so they had nothing left for post season

Playing more doesn’t mean more points. They were logging top pair defensive minutes as forwards

Give him more breathing room and he’ll be able to keep the elite play up more regularly I’d argue

Leafs fan coming in peace. This is going to help Canes tremendously offensively in the playoffs. Canes have not had issues with their defensive structure its the offense that didn't have that extra oomph but now they do.

Playoffs this year for Canes is gonna be very fruitful. I really like this trade for you guys. Rantanen is an awesome get. He still produced and dragged Avs to playoff spot when MacKinnon and Makar were out injured and Landeskog is not even playing. Rantanen is a stud! Hall would also provide secondary scoring.

I'm still processing this.

Necas has been my favorite Cane to watch and is a rare talent. I'll miss watching him in OT. On the other hand Mikko is going to he fun to watch and more Finns = more wins.

I really hope we don't Guentzel this situation 😕.
If his demands are true we may be happy if we did Guentzel it. I don’t know if I feel Rants is millions better than Jake, it would be ironic to lose Jake on price then pay way more for Rants.

We didn’t even discuss contract with Rants. I’m not saying it won’t happen, it just had nothing to do with whether or not they acquire him. He’s giving up his fa to sign with us. We have no idea if he’s interested, or if he wanted to test the market (safe presumption) or if the power of our sauna team is strong enough to keep him.
Yeah, given that they didn’t talk to him, and it wasn’t a sign and trade, there is a risk that he is just a rental, and the borg is ok with that risk.

At the end of the day, losing 1 year of Necas and Jack Drury for a rental, would be disappointing, but it isn’t the end of the world. Even if Necas goes on to become a perennial all-star, sadly the writing was on the wall that it likely wasn’t going to be here.

My point is, given the roster construction/cap available going into next year, the recent willingness to pay exceptional payers into their later years (Slavin, Guentzel), Rants age, I’m thinking it’s more likely then not that the FO has every intention to try to sign him, rather than viewing him as a rental.

As good of a fit as Guentzel was, I feel that Rantanen is on a much higher tier. He’s also 2yrs younger. Is that worth the extra $4-5M a year to resign him at $13-14M vs Guentzel’s $9M? Who knows.

They’re going to have to spend all their cap space on something. Now it makes the most sense to blow the lion’s share on Rantanen, especially if he’s as good a fit as Guentzel.

It’ll all depend on whether or not Rantanen wants to extend, I’m not worried about the Canes meeting his ask, for now at least.

Based on what I have read, Rantanen signed his current contract kinda last minute so maybe he thought that could happen again so I can understand the shock - even with the asking price. I can't imagine that they didn't discuss this with Mackinnon beforehand though?

Having watched Necas since going to the Checkers games with my family, I am gonna miss him and his sweet, kindness to fans/kids. Yet, it seems it was a long time coming. Excited for him to get to spread his wings and hopefully, play with some top tier talent. Zoom zoom.

For what's it worth, there's lot of buzz that the trade took Rantanen wholly by surprise. Obviously it shouldn't be, in the circumstances, but looks like he didn't get much warning. In which case obviously he hasn't been asked about re-signing with Canes either.
13x8 or 14x8 offer would help ease a lot of that surprise

Thanks, but if you watched every Canes game this year, you wouldn’t feel like the defense is sound, like previous years, and could very well be their undoing in the playoffs.

They are not as good as they have been but they are still one of the better Defensive teams in the league. We are just used to better.
