Confirmed with Link: [Col/Chi/Car] Rantanen (50% by Chicago), Hall, Nils Juntorp to Car - Drury, Necas, 2nd, 4th to Avs, 3rd round pick to Chicago

IF…

- the cap truly goes up to$92.5M
- Nikishin can be an immediate top 4 option
- they can keep Robinson for around $3M, Drury replacement (Jost?) at $1.5M, expect one of Nadeau/Unger Sorum/Artamonov (twitter report he may come over) to be a full time NHL player next season…

By my calculations, they’d still have roughly $14M in space AFTER giving Rantanen his $14M x 8 to find a Burns replacement and an Andersen replacement. (Even more space if they think Morrow is ready…)

They can still do a TON this summer

Another factor to be excited about is adding both Rantanen and Hall should improve our PP. Necas, as great as he was, was a complete dunderhead on the PP. His last significant move on the PP was that Columbus game, where he spent his entire shift turning it over.

Seriously, he took it from his own zone, attempted to skate through the 4 PKers, got it sent right back down. Then skated it back up the ice and attempted to pass through the 4 PKers, got it sent right back down. Then skated towards the bench. It was a stunningly bad shift.

In no world is Jost getting 1.5 from anyone. Robinson if it’s a long term deal shouldn’t be more than 2.5 or you move on like they did with Noesen. There’s no way you pay Jost and Robinson a combined 4.5. Jost will be a league minimum guy for the rest of his career

Waking up this morning feeling like:

My sources say Tulsky was trying to get Teuvo Teravainen back from Chicago, but Chicago misheard him and thought he said, 'Taylor' instead of 'Teuvo.' I expect them to correct this momentarily
Teuvo softly said, "please take me with you"

I'm also surprised they didn't want Turbo who can, ya know, play defense over Hall.

Team clearly values speed circa the Penguins last cups with Roslo and Hall.

I'm guessing Hall put in a trade request with Chicago since they retained just to move him.

We got Mikko freakin Rantenan…. Wow.. just stopping and trying to process it again.. Wow..

The CJ article on athletic provides good context. The posters from Avs board in here provide good context.

We got the higher performing player or more acknowledged higher end player. We got a bigger body which has been a rub for our roster construction and playoff play for years.

It makes total sense why Avs did the deal. I think Necas will be a cheat code for the MacKinnon line…. And their 3 on 3 overtime of MacKinnon Necas and Makar will be even more crazy to watch than our Aho Necas duo…. The Avs don’t have the same roster value construction we have so had to make a hard choice on going further down the path of. Able Leafs roster construction and being too top heavy. They clearly think Makar and MacKinnon are their keys and are trying to be stricter on salaries for the others. They are hoping that MacKinnon can get most of the same success with less expensive linemates. I have no doubt that if Rantenan would agree to a 9,10, or even 12m deal then this trade never happens. So they gave up the best performing asset in the trade but the long game contracts wise is why they had to do it.

We got the best overall player in the trade and are hoping some chemistry magic happens with Aho…. And that it solves a lot of the things we were looking for to go deeper in the playoffs… if so then we will pay more than Avs would because we can given how ruthlessly efficient we have been with all our other contracts on the roster.. all those smart moves over the past few years gets you this as a payoff….

This could overall be good for both teams and Chicago got their 3rd rounder back for retaining some salary which is a low second in reality and could give them another asset for their rebuild underway.

Hate to see Necas and Drury go. We get attached to our players and they were good players for us and good citizens and good representatives for the Hurricanes. Wish them nothing but success in the future except when we play the Avs.

Hello! Still the Preds fan who cheers for the canes on the side! What a crazy trade. I'm sure there are a ton of mixed feelings about it.

My main question is center still seems like a little bit of a question mark for this team? Is that just me or am I missing something?
that comes down to if kotkaniemi steps up his consistency.

drury was likeable as hell, but the roster is flexible. jost could slot in, they could call up suzuki or unger-sorum, or they could shift swiss-army-martinook back to c. drury was solid, but not exactly lighting it up even by fourth line standards.

or - and this won't happen, but just for funsies - maybe they liked what ratanen did at c when mackinnon was hurt and decide to give him some run there. if it works, him at center makes forking over big money in offseason more palatable. rants/aho/staal/kk (in whatever order) wouldn't be the worst we've put out down the middle over the years.
