That is true but with the cap going over 100 million in a couple seasons and Nikishin on a entry level deal Skjei at 7 million wouldn’t look that bad
The cap may go over 100 mill soon, but will our budget?

In all fairness, for whatever reason (covering for Skjei, injuries, motivation, etc), the chinks in his armour last year were showing...sometimes glaringly so. I don't think it's ridiculous to see that and think he was on the precipice of a steep decline, it happens to lots of d-men when they hit 30.I don’t see how they play for another team applies, compared to how they’d play for us.
Pesce has looked great every time I watch the Devils play. He’s definitely solidified their lineup. He also looks like he’s gotten over some of whatever injuries he was fighting with us because his skating is much better. The whole “Pesce is toast and is going to age poorly because he’s lost his mobility” canes board philosophy…..didn’t age well.
I’ve always thought Skjei’s rise was a product of Pesce so I wouldn’t have paid him what he got - but I haven’t watched Nashville so I couldn’t say. Pesce has also babysat Hughes and allowed him to start his rise. I doubt Hughes’ personal review of Pesce would be that he isn’t playing very well.
Everyone keeps talking about the rise of the cap and its effect on contracts value, but somehow paying Pesce 5.5 is over the top. He’ll only be 36 when it’s done. They could get six years out of him.
