Mikko taking so long to make a decision really screwed them IMO. With more time they could have easily turned one or both of those 1st round picks into something really good which would have keep them as a contender this season. Now it will be very difficult for them to make it far in the East.

After seeing/hearing everything that has gone on with the Mikko situation for the past while here is what I strongly believe happened.

There were strong reports about Carolina approaching the Avs during the offseason regarding Mikko but at the time Necas hadn't really broken out yet. Then Necas had a very strong start of the season which made him a lot more appealing to them especially if they were geting Drury as well. From that point on I believe the Avs had no longer any intentions of re-signing Mikko because they knew it would take 12M+. His new contract would have destroyed our depth completely starting as early as next season so really giving us only one shot at the Cup. Getting Necas at 6.5M was allowing them to get a 2C and most likely have at least two shots at the Cup.

They had a problem: how do you move Mikko without looking like you don't want him. Well you negotiate as normal and then you offer a final offer that you are absolutely certain he will counter-offer. They were convinced Mikko's camp would look at that 11.75M final offer as a negotiating tactic and counter-offer with something at 12M+. When they did they used the opportunity to trade him making it look like Mikko's demand was too much for them. They even warned him he could end up being traded so they had set the table for it.

I believe thay had no intentions of paying him more than 11M.

Because, at that time, Rantanen and his agent were obviously still looking for that bigger deal in Colorado. They were initially looking for 13M with Dallas as well, and the deal almost fell through because of that.

To say cling on to the fact that Rantanen signed for 250k more in Dallas than what was offered in Colorado, is extremely disingenuous. At the time, Rantanen was probably looking for much more money. He didn't choose between 11.75 in Colorado and 12M in Dallas.

All of the details between the 11.75 million offer in Colorado and the 12 million signing in Dallas are consequences of decisions made by Rants. So maybe at the time of each individual decision being made he was not intentionally forcing himself out, but the ultimate consequence of his own decisions is that he was forced out of Colorado. Ultimately, he chose to sign with a division rival at a number we may have met had he countered with it.

TLDR: he may not of intentionally forced himself out but the result of his own decisions is that he was forced out of CO.

Remember TML had a deal in place but Marner said no, then it shifted to Dallas and he played chicken on their contract offer right up until the last day before settling for 12M. Sounds like the Leafs offer was higher.

You're making a lot of assumptions that we just can't prove. I get where you're coming from but I believe some nuance should be used in the wording I guess. There's a world of difference, in my opinion, between demanding a lot of money, and demanding to be traded elsewhere.

Regardless, I'm happy they made the decision they did - whether or not Rantanen was overtly trying to get out of here, or if he was just trying to get the most he could. Glad it's over and glad we did what we did, and I don't think Rantanen looks very good for it either.

I could easily be wrong. But from what I remember, Duchene was in heavy trade talks well before he put his foot down and asked for a trade. Then it took forever. Duchene, in my mind, didn't force his way out. He knew he was out and just wanted it done with. Can you imagine your childhood favorite team drafting you, the team does nothing for 8 years, and then they want to trade you?

This tells me that the Canes agreed to send Mikko to Edmonton but Dallas came back with a better offer and the Oilers couldn't match.

It took time on draft day because Mikko was making less money in Dallas than the contract he negotiated with Edmonton.

That Edmonton report just doesn't make sense. Unless they were offering him a shit ton more than even the Canes, why on earth would he sign an extension in Edmonton (not in Carolina) if outside of hockey/gf was also a big factor in his decision lol.
