It sounds like the the Avs were serious in signing Mikko if Rant's side accepted their offer. But trades are complicated, Tlusty was on record saying the deal was a very complicated dance and part of the negotiation was that there could be zero leaks about any of the negotiation. This implies they didn't already decide to trade him because a leak would've actually helped bring in more offers. If they were actually interested in signing him, they could have gotten closer to each other's numbers with an honest conversation.
The approach they took, meant they were playing hardball with a lower number, which meant Mikko's agent needed to play hardball with a higher number.
This may have resulted in the Avs thinking Mikko wouldn't sign for less than $13M+. Which sounds like it wasn't true, Mikko said he didn't need more than Nate at $12.6M.
But I'm not really convinced the Avs honestly wanted to re-sign him. I think they might have already decided they'd use his cap hit to spread around the lineup. Which arguably makes sense, especially given Cale's pending raise.
In which case, an honest conversation would have been about giving a core player and fan favorite, who had been with your team though thick and thin for 10 years, and helped you win a Cup, the respect he deserves IMO.
Can you make sure you never buy a jersey of my favorite players? My first jersey was Laine Winnipeg jersey and my second was Kotkaniemi Habs jersey... lmaooo

You can't sit down and tell Rants he may be expendable at the right price, because if the trade falls through than you have a player that knows they aren't valued. It wasn't 'we're trading Mikko regardless of the return' but rather 'we'll trade Mikko for the right return'. In this case it was Necas + Drury + picks which is a pretty damn good return all things considered.
If there weren't any decent offers on the table i'd bet CMac ups his offer or sets a deadline on when a deal needs to get done.
My 3rd jersey is Aho Canes jersey and hope that'll be fine for another 10 yearsCan you make sure you never buy a jersey of my favorite players?
Funny enough that peak speed for Necas was against the Avs.Marty has registered the fastest speed of any skater in the NHL this year.
He is also skyrocketing up the 20 and 22 mph burst charts since joining the Avs. He’s now 3rd in both of them.
SPEEEEEEEEED!!!!
(Yep, MacKinnon is a freak on his own planet)

There’s no doubt there could be some truth to that.Listened to Strickland’s podcast from this week. Let me preface it by saying that I know he can be a tool and that he’s a bit of an Avs hater. I also know he gets his news from agents so his facts are probably exaggerated to one side a bit.
But after absolutely rinsing him last week about his whole “panic move” tweet, I listened to what he meant and I think I actually agree with him. When he said “panic move” he didn’t mean the Avs felt they had to trade him immediately or lose him for nothing. What he meant was, Carolina had this offer on the table and threatened they had to make a decision (be it Mikko, EP, Miller or whatever). Colorado obviously had concerns about what Mikko’s contract would look like in the end, they didn’t think a player like Necas would be an option to acquire anywhere else and they made the move without exploring all their potential options.

You are forgetting, Miller was almost traded even before the Rantanen trade happened. The deal with NYR only fell through because New York asked for retention in the end. What we heard from other sources was that the offer has been on the table for a while.
Basically the Canes had 3 trade offers (Mikko, Miller, EP) and had to choose one. It's no coincidence that Miller got traded shortly after Rants, Canucks were waiting to see if Carolina would pick one of their guys first.
The lack of substantial pieces from the Blackhawks in the trade leads to a potentially rushed decision before those element could be hashed out to make sure it didnt fall apart completely. Probably involving Seth Jones with a first going to Chi but Carolina wouldnt go that high and talks with Vancouver sped things up before the full trade could be worked out.Listened to Strickland’s podcast from this week. Don't look now but Necas is only 6 points behind Rantanen in the scoring race. I obviously love Mikko and will never discount his talent. He's always going to wow fans with his quick release and sniping ability. But I do think whoever plays with MacKinnon gets a bit of a boost. I wouldn't be surprised to see Rantanen and Necas finish very close (2-3 points) apart at the end of the year.
Not to mention Rants is only ahead because of the ridiculous amount of empty net points he has racked up. Necas is already the more productive player this season with the goalie in net and has done so with less talent around him.Don't look now but Necas is only 6 points behind Rantanen in the scoring race.
