I dunno. One of the most common themes on this board for the least few years was the, uh, "unpredictability" of Mikko's nightly efforts. Guy's talent is such that he could glide around like Johnny Weir for 55 minutes, and then score twice in the 3rd (OK, including an empty net). The question is what that type of effort is worth. Answer? Apparently not what Mikko and his agent were asking for. So you make a business decision in an effort not to become Toronto 2.0. Or worse - get nothing when the Moose hits the trail. Problem is that your trade targets are cut in half - no way do the Avs send him to a contender in the West.

We got a Cup out of the guy when he was affordable. But that was then. This is now. Gotta find another way of doing it. Because we can't recreate 2022. Nobody can - maybe this is the deal that finally brings that message home.

I give MacSakic credit for being unafraid to throw the furniture around. I hope it works. And frankly I'm excited about Necas.

He is a passenger most nights, he is a more consistent, more talented Burakovsky; but he isn't a Mac, Drai, Kucherov, he's more of a Bernie Nichols

That doesn't mean exactly the Draisaitl number  other reports made it clear that the 14M was the UFA number on a 7 year deal. The number for an 8 year deal with the Avs most likely would've began with a 12. The Avs didn't want to go even there.

We shall see. If and when he signs for less than 112M dollars, we will re-visit this.

It's kinda funny how Edmonton now screwed Colorado but if they paid Drai 14mil, how much is McDavid worth? They will be hurting.

11.75 - 12.5 is a looong ways away from "Draisaitl's number", though, even after negotiating will lead to a lower AAV, imo. 11.75 - 12.5x8, that you're so adament on, is 94-100M, also quite a ways away from 112M.

More things have changed, too, after Draisaitl signed that contract, with regards to the salary cap and expectations of how much it will rise the upcoming seasons.

It's not at all surprising to me if 14x8 is the initial ask and he'll end up with a, say, 13x8 for 104 total, after negotiating.
For that kind of contract, I feel the Avs made the right decision. Painful, but correct. If he signs for 12x8, I think I would have kept him. That's also based on the fact that Necas had big demands on a contract with the Canes last summer, which is why he ended up signing just a 2-year contract that took him to UFA. I expect it to be very hard to re-sign Necas, too.

It's funny how divided we all are on Rantanen and how not divided the rest of the league is. I've been getting a lot of 'haha' reactions to not being upset with losing Rantanen.

Definitely the most annoying reaction we have on this board lately.
Your GM wants to run the team rather than let an agent do it. He is a big loss but so is $14M x 8 in cap space. Lets see what the next move is because there will be one..

I mean other people see how it is in terms of paper. We lost a top ten player in the league for a worse one. The reality is, we would have had to trade Mikko during the trade deadline and the return would have been worse than this. Imo it's a fair trade but of course it sucks to give out the best player in the deal.

In my opinion, we should have sent Rantanen bagging in the off-season if he didn't sign a contract. Now it took too long and it hurt us.

This trade keeps us competitive and you can see how we are "rounding" this team up more now with better goaltending, better depth potentially and maybe something we don't know yet. There's imo more potential to this team but it can be also worse if things don't work out. Either way, I think we have a chance to win now. I think Rantanen would have eaten up especially in the future way too big part of the cap. This was the right decision long-term. We have the best defenseman in the world and one of the best centers in the world. Keep those and round out the lineup and we can competitive for some time. They alone are that good. Especially if Blackwood keeps playing on a high level.

It's massive to have three corner pieces, a great center, defenseman and a goaltender.

Avs are my West Team, this move has me scratching my head on 2 fronts.

Necas is extremely fast, talented, has hot streaks and then disappears. He wants to play center. Rod evidently doesn't see it.
Drury wins face offs, smart player. Can play up the roster, but don't recommend for long term, better off 4th line to take advantage in situations.

I think Necas just wasn't a fit in Carolina for Rods style. Now the question is, will Rants Guentzel us.

I'm not an actual betting man, but I can bet you his next deal starts with less than 13M if he re-signs with Carolina. Other sources have pointed it out plenty of times, the ask is between 11.75-12.5
I'll do an avatar bet on this. Winner gets to choose the loser's avatar and has to keep it up at least a month.

If Mikko signs for anything that starts with $12 or lower, you win

If Mikko signs for anything that starts with $13 or higher, I win

What do you think?
