To be completely fair, this was before the Draisaitl deal, which has been reported as being the game-changer that altered negotiations past the point of no return. How things got from "close" in July to not remotely close in September...yeah, that's not a great look.

Fair. Also, they share the same agent and Draisaitl's deal would've been in the works much sooner than September when it was announced so things could've shifted. Having said that, I still blame Jesse.

If nothing else comes, this will be one of the worst trades in recent history. It made us worse and didn’t fill the holes the roster has. I just can’t think CMac is done. I’m about 95% sure he’ll do more

Davidson in Denver multiple days meeting with CMac and Jones being scratched because he was "sick" make it even more confusing.
Byram was scratched for being "sick" before being traded too, but I think it may not have been that day either. I think there were reports they had been talking about a bigger deal prior. Can't remember for sure.
Maybe the Avs and Hawks had been talking about a bigger/different deal with Chicago involving Jones, and now after the complexity of the Mikko trade, they gotta restructure it, or simplify it?

I have to admit I didn’t see that coming from you.
Mikko has been dragging ass all season, hasn’t been able to carry a line, and wanted 14m per year.
Necas is 3 years younger, signed through next season, and get this… was Carolina’s leading scorer with 55 points in 49 games and has CARRIED HIS OWN LINE. His center has been f***ing Kotkaniemi and he’s 11th in the league in points.
One of the fastest skaters in the league, he goes from Kotkaniemi to likely MacKinnon as his center. Him and Nate will be absolutely flying past opponents. If he could put up 9 less points than Mikko this year playing 6 less minutes per game and next to Kotkaniemi, imagine what he will do with Nate. Mikko was also feasting on empty net points.
Drury is a solid hockey player. Finally a guy to win draws. Very solid defensively. Tenacious forechecker. Strong PKer. A natural center unlike Kelly and other dudes we have forced into the role.
Draft capital will help in deadline acquisitions.
If Mikko truly wanted 14m per season, I actually love this trade.

It's obviously going to hurt losing the best goal scorer on the team but if he didn't want to sign for something palatable, this is much better than Rantanen walking in free agency.
Best of luck to Mikko wherever he lands eventually. It's a bold strategy for Canes. Let's see if it pays off for them.

I'm as all in as anyone, but this is definitely a MAD scientist move that gives you a very good player in replacement, for now, and the future.
We were both solidly in, no way you make a trade that makes sense now and in the future at this point. Cmac just did it.. No UFA has gotten that return in my memory.

We’re in a position to compete for the cup before Nate gets old and regresses. If CMac doesn’t fix the 2C issue and the defense, we will be in deeper shit. Mikko was the only pure sniper we had, I guess Nate is too if he shoots the puck more, but we have so many pass first players and Necas is another one. We gonna lose significant goal production without Mikko.
We aren’t a rebuilding team to worry about future cap problems. We need to win now, and for now at this moment, we are a much worse team, but again, I don’t believe CMac is done. He can’t be done, there should be more to come
