Interesting rule, I didn’t know that.

but looking back it seems like I overlooked that possibility. Unless Avs file for arbitration which I doubt

I

It's my understanding the 2 year rule only works if there is two years of RFA left. The team can't elect 2 years and one of them be an UFA year. Pretty sure the Preds went through this recently with a player, although can't remember who it was.
I think you are both correct, I didn’t realize he only had one RFA year left I thought he had two, if he’s only got one that’s all the arbitration can be for

Mitt’s current contract ends in June. 1 more year of control.

That’s two playoff runs. Not much for a top pairing level defender thats 22.

Makes this trade substantially less appealing vs having Mitts for 3 playoff runs. Our real window.

This forces Ritchie to be a 2C on day one.
Two more years after this, so three playoff runs.

Mitts won’t be a UFA until the 2026-2027 season.

It’s a moot point anyway, since the Avs will sign him long term and probably at a discount.

Despite the barrage of lefties I like Byram on Buffalo, lots of good pieces that I think will turn into a team.

I’m not convinced Mitts the 2C answer to Kadri question, but I 100% see him as an upgrade to RJ. Therefore worth a shot and even if he’s not the 2C answer he’s still good depth on a team that needs it. If Byram stays healthy I could see him being the better player, but that’s a really big if.

Mittelstadt is UFA eligible 2026.

I actually went back and looked at our conversations about this and due to some weird covid rule, Mitts isn't UFA until 25-26. So 2 years.

That’s what I said. He’s not eligible for UFA until after the 2025-2026 season. So another two years after this one.

With Byram in chain Sabres won against Oilers last night really nice onset even it was only first round and going second and third and more rounds.

So you think they let Byram go just for a rental ? Mitts is rfa. I think They will sign him 5-6years at less than 6M
The Avs have Middlestadt for this playoffs and two more. If he comes in on too big a number July 2026 they will move on. Of course they will want to keep him, but he’s not a core piece. He’s a support player. So if the cost is too high, they will move on.

He’s not signing a one year deal lmao. He’s signing 7Mx5 or something close to that.

The Avs usually don't trade for a player with expiring term without having an idea of a ball park figure to re-sign the player. Mitts will be extended this summer no doubt. I expect 5-6 years at around 6.5-7M.

Where is this incorrect information coming from?

The Avs have two years of control after this one, not one.

The Avs don’t truly HAVE to make a decision on him until after the 2025-2026 season ends.

However, CMac said that the Avs would have only given up Byram for a long-term piece and that should tell everyone how highly they think of Mitts, so I think this entire conversation is pointless. CMac went on to say that they would get the contract handled after the season.

I think what happened is that you haven't watched these two players much the last couple of years.
It's an old fashioned hockey-trade that will be beneficial to both teams in the long run, imo.
Byram's trajectory has fallen off so hard that he fetches a C in his peak that isn't even on pace for 20 goals?..

Yeah it doesn’t really matter, a deal will get done unless Mitts is asking for the moon or has an awful run here - which I doubt. Probably 6.5.

Why are people talking like Mittelstadt is only going to be in Colorado for like a year, or two.

I think it’s far more likely that he gets a long term deal this off-season.

It’ll be 3 years at the shortest and upwards of 8. It might be a 6 year deal, since that’s a term Colorado has liked in the past.
Mitts is the type that will take a discount to play where he’s comfortable as well. He’s a humble kid and as long as the Avs are fair with him there’s no doubt he signs there mid term.

The real question is what will Byram command on his next contract. Buffalo has a ton of money in Dahlin and Power.

They’re likely going to agree to a deal this off-season with some term on it.

I think one guy is just convinced he is going to walk so the rest were just discussing what the contract situation is. I don’t think anybody believes Colorado is gonna let him walk except one poster

The Avs are going to pay Middlestadt 7 per? I don’t think so.

They let Kadri walk.

Cherry-picking one specific stat to try to make a point, huh? Classic hf, right there.
Mittelstadt has become a much better player than you seem to think based on your two posts.

I bet he comes in around 6.35 or so
I’m sure the Svs will try to get Mitts locked up long term but there will be a number they will not go to. Same as Kadri. They will have Mitts for at least two playoff runs. If the numbers don’t work then they can bring in a different guy. Mitts is good but he’s not a core piece.

It’s not all about goal scoring, besides the Avs are the #1 goal scoring team in the entire NHL, so that’s not what they’re missing anyways. They have guys who can score.

Mitts is one of the best playmakers in the league and has a deceptively good shot that he rarely uses. As long as he plays good defense and distributes the puck to the Avs goal scorers, that should be all that is asked of him.

Sounds like an annoyed rival fan trying to stir up a troll by bad mouthing two players that would likely be two of the best young players on the trolls team.
