Buffalo’s been looking to add a top 4 defenseman for ~2 years. A righty would’ve been better, but I’m quite certain Mittelstadt doesn’t get traded for straight up magic beans. The Sabres org obviously view(s/ed) Byram as a young top pairing D. Whether they’re right about that is still tbd, but I can’t imagine they’d be anywhere near as excited about a pick.
Why? They got Dahleen and Powers, signed for nearly 20 on the left side.

If he was a righty, it would make sense but not another lefty when that is locked up for a decade.

As for picks, there is a ton of defenseman available this draft and they will finish within range to get one.

He reminded me a little bit of Ryan O'Reilly. The skating style, his quick stick to try and steal pucks, body positioning along the boards, good 200 foot game. I think once he settles in to our system and gets chemistry with his linemates he'll do well. His line consisted of him, a guy who played his 1st game back from 7 weeks in rehab, and Jo Drouin. They didn't have much chemistry going but seemed to get better as the game went on. Good trade for both teams.

Kinda small sample size. And Byram isn't bad at all. He's a great young defender. This trade is good for both teams. Why can't people happy for both teams and hope it works out well for both instead of always having to "win" a trade and especially after just a handful of minutes on the ice for both players. :help:
Did you read my post? I’m not trying to be that guy, dude. So stop treating me like I’m that guy

Wonder what he will sign for and if the avs can even get a deal done if not be an expensive rental

Well for a start Mittelstadt is a pending RFA not UFA...I believe he also has two years of RFA eligibility left which means that, even if things go horribly this offseason and Mittelstadt files for arbitration, the Avs (as the party not filing for arbitration) can select a two year term. So, the Avs can pretty much guarantee he's here until 2026.

But the Avs have needed a decent #2 centre for long enough that I'm guessing they will get it done. By all accounts the Avs were offering Kadri 6+ million per year two seasons ago but couldn't move the necessary cap (EJ) in time.

He’s an RFA still, so it’s not like Mitts can just unilaterally decide to go to FA. Even then, I can’t imagine the Avs would give up what they did for him without a plan to keep Mitts long-term.

I think there's a decent chance Byram is the best player moved during this deadline, in terms of peak performance during their careers. The trade is augmented by the fact Casey is arguably the best player moved, right now.
Ehm Tarasenko and Kusnetzov got moved. Are you telling us that Byram was better at his peak then them? I think he is arguably outside of top 4 if you count in Hertl and Guentzel...

This trade has potential to be a franchise changing one. Byram adding a second elite 1D talent along with Dahlin would be wild.

At the same time proving young Mitts with the most support he’s ever had, who in his own right isnt finished developing and could develop into an elite 2C and allowing Colorado to win multiple cups with that 1-2 punch.

Byram is better than both Senko and Kust right now. I think he’s referring to him developing into what his potential is as well.

I'm I the only one who thinks it's weird that people are still questioning the LHD thing after Byram plays 2 very solid games on the first pair with Dahlin?

Both of them and Power each managed to play well over 20 minutes in each game. Which is kinda what you want from your top 3D?

What are they thinking? Isn't it that? ^^^
Two games is a bit small for sample size, especially regarding the chemistry with Dahlin, but yeah agreed in principle.
If that's normal game-day Byram we're seeing right now, this trade may turn out to be a good one for Buffalo.

I find it weird that there’s a “I told you so” crowd, when the majority of Avs fans are sad to see Bo go, and are happy for his success. He’s in a good situation where the team is younger and there’s time for him to grow - unfortunately, the Avs in the past couple of seasons have shown that they don’t have patience for guys to “figure it out”.

I think Bo is going to look great on the Sabres as they have a less strict system in place. I hope he grows and reaches that potential we saw of him. He’s a great kid, he’s overcome a lot of adversity already, he deserves any success he has.

Byram is up there for most overrated defenceman, he CAN be ok but he usually isn’t

Colorado really f***ed up by not selling him after the playoffs when he did well with sheltered minutes/pairings
They just got a 2C...In some cases he had less value back then due to how often he was out.

I think Bo will thrive in a system that has no system. I also think if there is a coaching change he might struggle. He might also have a tough time if his minutes get eaten up. We're all rooting for him. I hope that Bo works out well for Buffalo, I hope Mitts works out well for CO. I'd rather have Mitts for where the team is at. Bo couldn't move up the lineup over Girard in CO. He's had multiple chances.

Yeah it’s weird.
I’m sure most of us realize that in a vacuum, the Sabres probably got the better value. Imo Byram has the potential to be one best defensemen in the league, but that just wasn’t gonna happen in Colorado when the actual best defensemen in the game was playing right in front of him.
