Yeah it’s weird.
I’m sure most of us realize that in a vacuum, the Sabres probably got the better value. Imo Byram has the potential to be one best defensemen in the league, but that just wasn’t gonna happen in Colorado when the actual best defensemen in the game was playing right in front of him.
That’s just it. Any trade including Bo we would lose, because he’d never become what he could with the Avs. Dude is gonna flourish and challenge Dahlin for #1 in a few years. Book it.

Why? They got Dahleen and Powers, signed for nearly 20 on the left side.

If he was a righty, it would make sense but not another lefty when that is locked up for a decade.

As for picks, there is a ton of defenseman available this draft and they will finish within range to get one.

Dahlin frequently plays the right side, and there’s a MASSIVE difference between a 22yo you think you can put on your top pairing today and a pick that you aspirationally hope might be able to do that job in 3-6 years.

1.25. He could take the qualifying offer and walk if he wanted. I doubt it, but he could.
Major Ouch.

That makes this trade significantly worse for the Avs unless this guy is willing to take a big discount to resign.

Avs don’t have cap space to pay him like a 2C.

Arbitration is definitely not out of the question here. If he came to the Avs to also get paid, he’ll be a little more than a rental played for us. Gone next summer as a UFA.

Avs are reloading in hopes to win the Cup during Middlestadt’s current contract. Then, if he walks as a UFA, they will reload again with different players around their core. When a club has an elite core (especially Mac and Makar) they will reload and try to get the Cup each year.

It would actually be for 2.25, in arbitration cases the party who did not initiate gets to choose the term. In this case the team would select a two year term which would walk Casey to UFA

I think a lot of that depends on how his time with you guys goes. If it’s a good fit and successful deep run he could sign an extension for below vslue.

If it goes to arb I could see Mittelstadt getting 7.

Mitt’s current contract ends in June. 1 more year of control.

That’s two playoff runs. Not much for a top pairing level defender thats 22.

Makes this trade substantially less appealing vs having Mitts for 3 playoff runs. Our real window.

This forces Ritchie to be a 2C on day one.

Interesting rule, I didn’t know that.

but looking back it seems like I overlooked that possibility. Unless Avs file for arbitration which I doubt

We don’t have the assets to get another 2C now. Byram was the only one we had that could fetch one. He did. But for just two playoff runs before we lose him to UFA is very painful. If it’s 3 playoff runs… then it does start to pencil. That’s a nice window to have a guy in his absolute prime.

The Avs will continue to reload every year around this core. Mitts is just one of those support players the club will bring in and let go (if the cost to keep) is too high.

We were operating under the assumption that we had guaranteed control over Mitts for the rest of this season and next only. Am I wrong in that? @dotcommunism
It's my understanding the 2 year rule only works if there is two years of RFA left. The team can't elect 2 years and one of them be an UFA year. Pretty sure the Preds went through this recently with a player, although can't remember who it was.

I find it weird that there’s a “I told you so” crowd, when the majority of Avs fans are sad to see Bo go, and are happy for his success. He’s in a good situation where the team is younger and there’s time for him to grow - unfortunately, the Avs in the past couple of seasons have shown that they don’t have patience for guys to “figure it out”.

I think Bo is going to look great on the Sabres as they have a less strict system in place. I hope he grows and reaches that potential we saw of him. He’s a great kid, he’s overcome a lot of adversity already, he deserves any success he has.
Is there an I told you so crowd? Or is there like two people on the internet being goofballs?

I think most people see this for what it is, two good players got traded to better situations

There definitely is a couple of people, there’s a group of Avs fans that are convinced Byram is a franchise D, future captain, generational talent and Mitts is a random nobody that will walk ASAP. It’s weird

So you think they let Byram go just for a rental ? Mitts is rfa. I think They will sign him 5-6years at less than 6M

It honestly wouldn't shock me at all if he takes less than he could get on the open market, especially if he gets there and really likes the team and city.

Sometimes these guys come from these organizations that have struggled, get to one that is doing well and is more than willing to eat some money just to make sure they stay with a good team. Some won't, some are strictly in it to make the most they can, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did take less.
