My faith in Lou Lam's sanity is beginning to be restored. :handclap:

If he hires Oates, your faith will be destroyed again, though. :help:

Just caught up with this entire thread now.

Oates? ADAM FRIGGIN' OATES??

Excuse me while I barf.

I mean, as someone said, might as well keep Deboer if you're going to hire Oates. geez...

The one thing I found interesting from Wyshynski's article on Puck Daddy was this quote
Those close to the team have told me that his refusal to go young hurt those players and hurt the team. It was a point of contention, internally, for the last year.

Only sense I can make of firing him now is if Lou knows this is a failed season and at least wants to get someone in that will better manage the young players on the team.

Well, that's that then. Obviously not all his fault, but something had to change. Now let's see how the team responds.

I just came here to post that article and is is very fairly written, looking at the entire situation from all angles and not tunnel vision view

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/should-lou-lamoriello-follow-pete-deboer-out-the-door-for-devils-211902811.html

Only area I question in that article is when he brings up at the end who Lou used to replace certain guys. Sure there were a questionable contract or two given out, specifically the Clowe one, but it was either bring in some of those guys like Clowe, Ryder, Brunner, etc or bring up younger guys from within which would have been even worse than what we've seen since. Bringing in those guys was the prettier and essentially only option to remain competitive.

I am going to speculate that that is a reason why Stevens ended up leaving

no basis for that, just a hunch.

I honestly thought before the Oates rumors Stevens might have been coming behind the bench to coach. If for no other reason than because this would have at least been a low-pressure environment to give someone their first HC job and because he and Pete weren't exactly of a like mind anyway.

Maybe Stevens comes back now?

Not as an assistant. I do buy the family stuff as a reason he didn't want to be an assistant though I think the conversation changes if he had gotten offered the head job.

The only purpose of bringing in Adam Oates as HC would be to solidify the McEichel guarantee. Aside from that, I want to see some new blood in here. At least the next little bit will be interesting to see in terms of player decisions, lineups, etc. Something interesting in a season of dull, dreary hockey.

There aren't a lot of great looking options out there, but Paul MacLean is one of the handful that should be of interest, John Stevens would be an interesting option, but the way he went out with the Flyers doesn't sit home too well

I don't think Torts is a great coach, but the one thing you can't fault him for is holding his players accountable.

Not that I endorse hiring him on any level, I don't, but a different coach that has the same accountability would be welcomed IMO. Enough of the country club atmosphere.

I doubt Torts is willing to sign as an interim coach.

But I really want an interim coach of the disciplinarian type. For me, the #1 thing I'm looking for is someone willing to break up the country club for veteran players.

This is largely an incomplete picture being painted with horse manure.

Of course is incomplete, never claimed otherwise. Outside of 1 season, we have not been competitive since April 2010. Since this date is prior to DeBoer's hiring, its a sign that he wasnt walking into the greatest of situations.

There has been a LOT of poor decisions made that has nothing to do with DeBoer even when he has been here and the team has not been competitive and is likely to extend past his dismissal.

While it is one thing to feel relief of DeBoer's firing, it took Lemaire a couple of weeks (and trading of a captain) to right the ship with the given roster. Is any new coach going to have success with this roster which needs to be overhauled? We dont have a system of a GM/Coach so a consistent failure like weve had 3 seasons running cant surely be solely pinned on the guy tasked to get the players he doesnt sign to gel.

How much time should Lou be given to clean the mess he made when we should be expecting him to not make this in the first place?

The success of the new coach will hinge on the changes Lamoriello makes...or someone new.

What are some good things about DeBoer? He had good possession stats for you guys the last couple of years(before this year).

What are his offensive strategies? Does he fit well with a skilled line-up or a grinding line-up?

Would you say the teams struggles have more to do with him or the roster?

It's mostly the roster but he is unable to adjust his strategy. It works with the right players but without them it doesn't. This team would be garbage with any strategy though.

I think Pete would be awesome for SJ.

My thoughts on Pete....decent systems coach in the offensive zone. Defensive zone system mediocre. Probably the worst coach the Devils have had from a talent evaluation standpoint since Herb Brooks (and Herb Brooks was awful in this regard). A very stubborn coach.

He fell in love with a lot of the 2012 fringe guys because it was the inly success he had as a coach. When ever things got tough he would go back to those guys. This should have been a playoff tram the previous two years and lineup personnel decisions are the #1 reason why they missed. This year add in those same issues and another year of age on an old roster and you get what you get.

The way he managed the roster imo and the lack of overall success says to me he is not an NHL caliber coach.

He is an average coach. If he's got top end talent he's ok (not great). Anything less then that, be prepared for some bizarre decisions and stubbornness that will make you pull your hair out. Along with mediocre results.

We arguably do not have a top 100 forward.. Jagr is too old and Cammi can't stay healthy. This was not pdb fault and is going to be a challenge to any coach coming in

Yeah Pete's biggest weaknesses are being stubborn to a fault (two years of Zubrus getting top six duty is about 1 1/2 years too long) and falling in love with the overachiever-type players to a fault.

Agreed, but something had to change, and it's easier to change coaches than to turn over half your forwards. And I think, kind of like with Marty, it was time to move on.

They are certainly waiting to name at least an interim replacement. They've now got effectively 24 hours or less for someone to come in an name the lineup for tomorrow, gosh isn't there usually a pre game skate? You would think they would have known when they let Deboer go whom they were naming to replace him. Wasn't that rather a key thing?

Stay tuned I guess.
