I can't wait until the Leafs start winning more games than we lose....then maybe we won't be looked at as a dumping ground.

As to the OP....lol....no.

Doubt very much Ottawa would trade Macarthur to a division rival. If this is it for him they LTIR him more than likely.

The concern wasn't the LTIR..it is the rumour out there the contract is uninsured. So Sens are on the hook and leaves them the hole by 4.6m for the next 4 years. Melnyk won't spend more than 68m...so now his budget is really 63.5m.

That's the problem.

Clarke MacArthur's recent concussion appears to be career ending, Ottawa having $4,650,000 count against the internal budget will hamstring any chance they had at contention.

What would it take to convince Toronto to take on the financial burden, and help out a divisional rival?

Tough luck for Ottawa

There are special programs for teams that need to borrow money??? Yeah...they are called bank loans. The NHL isn't going to give Melnyk any money. Franchises lose money every year. That's the risk with ownership.

No the nhl has their own ways of lending money to teams....

It use to only apply to teams in the USA but it's within Canada now too.

I don't like to see teams limited by internal budgets...the league needs to prevent that because it causes teams like Ottawa that could be perennial playoff teams to have a harder time icing a competitive roster due to a cheap owner.

That being said, the cost has been established in the Bolland trade. Anything less and it's a no from the Leafs.

100% ridiculous

The only thing more ridiculous, was a Habs fan (of course) suggesting we send someone young and useful, for the retirement bound player.

Here's an idea: No deal.
...and why the Leafs?

Out of the entite league the leafs have the most resources like to eat a 20m dollar contract on LTIR.

I also disagree with the notion of a "divisional rival" price.
Smart GMs do whats best for their team, regardless of who they're trading with.
Besides, it's been a long time since the Leafs have had a rivalry with anyone...maybe briefly with Boston but thats it.

Why would you want to help Ottawa out? In a year or so they are competition for a playoff spot. Why do anything?

Chabot is a decent prospect but he isn't likely a top pairing guy. Lupul situation is currently handled. No need to move him at this point.

Chabot's ceiling is a top 2 d-man. He is showing signs of possibly being a #1.

If you think a prospect of Chabot's caliber would be included in a cap dump like this, you're nuts.

Leafs already have way too many dead contracts to take on MacArthur's. The Rangers would be a much better fit imo, they've got the money to bury MacArthur and seem to be trying to rebuild on the fly. Maybe something like this would work:

Nash for MacArthur, Chabot, and Ottawa's 1st 2017 or 2018 (their choice by end of season)

Nobody has proof it was unisured.. Its not like Melnyk to leave himself vulnerable like that. So im calling BS.

But even so The leafs would be the last team i contact about the contract. And Chabot/White/Brown would be off the table. Itd be picks

You are saying the Senators signed Clarke MacArthur to a five year contract extension and didn't insure the contract?

Why on earth would they do that?

Sounds like utter nonsense. Please provide a link.

Well Columbus signed Horton to a 7 year contract and didn't insure it. I have seen nothing to indicate that MacArthur's contract was uninsured though. Very curious where this "information" is coming from.

Horton failed a physical to get his contract insured like amare stoudemire with he knicks. Macurther had no health issues at the time of his signing. It is possible he is uninsured though , but that would be ownership decision not lack of options like horton

yeah im sure melnyk will have no problem paying the guy 18.75 million not to play if his contract is uninsured. surely that wouldnt hamper a team with an internal budget:)

You know what would hamper a team on an internal budget more? Trading a blue chip prospect that is cost controlled for 7 years to get rid of a contract for a player that may still play again, and plays well when he is in the lineup.

What we need to do is jettison a-holes like Sieloff that lay dirty hits on teammates in training camp. I'm all for guys working to try to earn a job, but hit clean. Or better yet, let good, honourable hard-working guys like Neil and Ryan continue to use morons like Sieloff as punching bags and make an example of them.

Leafs might do it for Karlsson, I'd wager.

Whats that I'm hearing? Matthews for Sieloff? We might do that, I'd wager.

Melnyk has a net worth of over $1 Billion dollars...why again would the NHL lend him money?

It's a fund set up for any team. I don't think you've been following the media with all of the Sens money troubles

Melnyk himself complained of not being able to access these funds publically when it was only available in the USA.

Business is complicated net worth is not liquid assets or cash on hand. If he doesn't have 4 million on hand then you need to liquidate positions you have. When you sell assets in the millions it costs tax. It's cheaper to borrow money from league set up funds and try to find ways to write off the interest. You borrow the money hoping to make money which he does after the first round of the playoffs according to him.
