If Laine is not scoring goals he's just another 20 year old trying to figure out the NHL game
He's not even that. Most 20 year olds trying to figure out the NHL game put in more effort than that.

He reminds me of a spoiled child out there, like the NHL owes him goals. If he added a little passion and grit to his game he'd be amongst the NHL point leaders right now.

Sure would be nice if he had a fiery personality that translated on ice, looks like he would prefer not to go into the dirty areas, thinks he can stick handle like the greats, and generally thinks d is a afterthought, I've said this before most people will over look his game at the moment if he scores and score often but when they don't go in it magnifies his lack of overall game even more

The Jets were trapped in an episode of The Cronichles of Rittich, in which the Jets were the bad guys. They looked more dangerous and fired more shots, but still lost the fight in the end.

Does it matter? I still want to know if Johnny will be able to play hockey anymore. He took a vicious slash to the arm and shoulder and his he was holding his wrist like it was chopped off. I won't be able to sleep again until mr skittles is back on the ice.
I would suppose it matters to me, that’s why I asked the question.

The reason I am so hard on Laine is that he has all the tools to be one of the GOAT. Until he really wants to be one of the best, and does all the things he can to be that (sacrifice, team play, supreme effort) he will only be a one dimensional scorer (albeit an amazing one).

Even if he never figures that part of the game out, he will always be a useful tool as someone who can put the puck in the net, it would just be a shame if he didn't realize his incredible potential.

  • A mostly positive showing on the scoresheet that was for naught because of some post-Christmas gaffes, running into a stifling defense, and maybe a bit of the referees still in a Christmas dinner hibernation.
  • Hellebuyck can't save half of a goal, but hard to fault him on the first two of three (I think he could have had the third but positioned himself incorrectly based on how Byfuglien played the middle of the ice). Laine scored on his own net against the grain as Hellebuyck was correctly moving laterally to the open man on his left, and all six Jets got caught puck-looking as Gaudreau and Lindholm made them look like fools:
    eCnlkzY.png
  • What would you say if I told you that this iteration of the bottom-6 should be expected to outplay the top-6? Perreault-Lowry-Tanev and Copp-Roslovic-Appleton were an absolute force tonight, although most of the shots were coming from distance and Flames did well to negate any second chances. That being said, Connor-Little-Laine is a line combo that has been in disarray for quite awhile after their torrid start (something I've been saying for a while) and I think it's because Little needs help on the forecheck. Would anyone be against a line combo of the following?:
    • Ehlers-Scheifele-Wheeler
    • Perreault-Little-Laine
    • Connor-Lowry-Copp
    • Tanev/Petan-Roslovic-Appleton
      • Here's the problem - to fix your conundrum on the second line, you need to break up your third and thus you can't utilize Tanev at his best - with Lowry, defensively. But, right now you're not maximizing Laine at his best - scoring lots of goals. Quite the problem to have, and I know this will cause a discussion in and of itself. I'm not too sure here either because I do appreciate Tanev's defensive play as of late, but you can't depend on his gritty style of goals (second chances, rebounds, bang/crash crease, etc.) night to night. The team needs Laine to score; Connor to score; Little to score; Wheeler to score.
  • Honestly, there's not much else to say in this game, as all three defensive pairings had strong play, and really it was Morrissey-Trouba that gaffed on the second goal against and Chiarot-Byfuglien got caught penalizing yet again (and yes, Kulikov-Myers is a night and day difference than the start of the season). Jets got caught playing Calgary's style of game and suffered immensely for it, getting beat on quick counters, having trouble moving through the neutral zone, and not getting any second chances as Rittich saw most of the shots he faced. Jets need to look more alive to beat a trap-game like this.
Chief's final eyetest says: wish there was a way to actually see this in numbers, but it's visually apparent that the Jets are giving up way more odd-man rushes than the previous season. Need to fix that, especially against teams like Calgary which feast on those chances.
Great post. Actually, I'd move Connor to the 4th line at this point, and run...

ESW
Perreault-Little-Wheeler
Copp-Lowry-Tanev
Connor-Roslovic-Appleton

You could also swap Copp and Connor. But I agree that with Connor in a bit of a funk, Little needs more support on the forecheck.

Is that Wheeler on two lines? Geez, he's gassed as it is, any more work and he'd need this:

Mind you, he'd block a lot of shots with all that stuff.

Note: The figure in the bed is a dummy. That is just a coincidence.

great more minutes for wheeler.
Maurice has convinced himself that Wheeler is some sort of iron man robotic hockey machine that can save the universe. He should go re-watch the Vegas 4 game sweep loss so he can re-educate himself and realize that Wheeler has his limits too, and that there would be some benefit to not having him completely spent come post season this year.

Calgary played a trap game.
Calgary had their goalie playing at an unsustainable level.
Calgary had the refs on their side.

This is the Vegas way.
That is my thoughts. Calgary is the new Vegas and Rittich is having his hamburglar time. It'll end soon, Im sure.

It’s complicated though Jet. That back check effort he made where the puck accidentally went off his stick is a thousand miles away from a lazy one dimensional goal scorer like Brett Hull was. It took Ovi until a few years ago to accept the defensive responsibility Laine already has. There are serious gaps in Laine’s puck protection, compete level on the wall, and mood management but he has A good base to build on.

For the record I get pissed off too when he seems to give up to easily at times but then I watch him bust his ass on a back check I think f*** that’s something I never saw from many of the great goal scorers.

This description fits Chef, Wheeler and Connor even better, but hey, let's focus on the kid that fell into your lap at the lottery and who every team in the entire league would sign in the blink of an eye, if they could. At least Laine showed an effort, although the outcome wasn't great tonight. A couple of nice plays and a shot off the pipe with 5 sog is still OK in my books.

Laine and Connor need to both get going but the thing that stood out the most in this game is how brutal Trouba played , guy is making 6 million this year , i expect more out of him .

In Winnipeg it’s much better to hustle, block shots, and try hard (even if you aren’t great) than it is to be an elite shooter that is fighting it and looking a bit lethargic.

Yup. And the team is doing pretty darn well. There shouldn’t be this much negativity. It’s crazy.

I’m still of the opinion that Laine is doing what he’s being told to do for whatever reason. It would sure help the mood of this board if we knew what Maurice was telling Laine. I have a very hard time believing that Laine has changed his entire style of play and on ice demeanor on his own.

Can someone explain to me how the Flames got a PP after Buffs slash? I mean if that was a called penalty, Gaudreaus goal immediately after should have cancelled the PP, right?
Haven’t checked stat sheet, but guessing the decision was to call a double-minor; if so, I believe only the first minor of the two is nullified by a goal.

Edit: just realized: for the same reason stat sheet never shows a single minor penalty when it’s nullified by a delayed penalty goal, the first half of a double minor wouldn’t show on stat sheet, either. Guess we’re left to deduce this.

Edit 2: confirmed that, if a double-minor was indeed the call, then Buff serving 2 minutes would be the result. From Wikipedia:

“In the NHL, if the non-offending team scores a goal in a delayed penalty situation, then it is treated as if a goal was scored during that penalty. Thus, if the delayed penalty is a minor, the penalty is waved off. If the delayed penalty is a double-minor, only the first two-minute block is waved off, and the offending player must still serve the second time block.”
