disagree, I wish him the best if he does get picked up, but I would rather have the ability to have him in the minors for call up in case of emergency

Would be much better not keeping a 900k cap hit just for the option to bring back some more Ehrhoff.

Just curious...why Gravel and not Forbort?

Is Gravel now ahead of Forbort?

Hard to know. A few years ago, when Gravel was still at St Cloud, Tonnelisghost (TG)
(miss him here) said that Gravel was almost NHL ready then. TG raved
about him. Obviously, it took another 2 years...and now Gravel is playing first PP unit in Ontario
and Stothers calls him "a leader and possible future captain"...so the ones in the
know, think very highly of him.

I think it's 1 or 2 or both: the Kings kind of know what / where Forbert is
in being able to contribute and they do not know where Gravel is, in terms
of stepping in and getting a few games. AND, possibly the Kings are talking trade
with teams and there is interest in Gravel / Forbert. Why wouldn't there be?
2 big young defensemen trained in the Kings system that has produced some good
defensemen the last few years: Voynov, Martinez, Muzzin, Colin Miller.
If teams want Gravel, it would behoove BOTH the Kings and said team to see him
in some games.

I hope the Kings can keep both, unless there is a deal that they cannot pass up.
Don't want rentals though...highly regarded Ladue should be joining Ontario soon and then there's Lintuniemi and Cernak not too far away. Those 3 may be in Ontario next season.

Agreed PJBII. I think it's a chance to create some competition too since they were almost always seen on the same footing. But for all we know Gravel comes in and blows the doors off. Glad he just finally gets a chance to show off.

Curious what opinion will be like around here though if he stinks up the joint considering how sour so many are on Forbort (who I personally think needs more playing time to see what we have though I can understand why Sutter doesn't want to give it to him).

depends if that means not being able to do something at the trade deadline. Us being fans likely will never know for certain if it will

That hooking penalty last night must been the last straw for Sutter. Despite how the game ended up, that was a huge mistake early in the game.

I think the story isn't finished. One of Gravel or Forbort is probably gone in the next couple weeks. Which one? Probably isn't determined yet. Kings want to at least see what they might be letting go. You have to. It helps you decide better. I wonder if anyone will claim Ehrhoff. If not, there will be cap hit above $900 still. I don't think Gravel is actually ahead of Forbort. But that's not what this is about right now.

Forbort hasn't been given a full chance yet. DS has no problem giving McBain, Ehrhoff, and Schenn all the time in the world to settle in, and by the time it's all finished, he probably won't like what he sees in all 3. Will Gravel get more of a chance than Forbort? I really doubt it.

Really looking forward to Gravel at the NHL level. He has been an absolute treat to watch this season with the Reign. I was commenting at the last game with another Kings writer about we felt like Gravel looked better than Forbort.

Should have a full post up later on Hockeybuzz, but I think the kid has at least earned this much. Always been a big Gravel guy. Will be interesting to see how his NHL game looks.

It'll be I believe $600,000 because the first $900,000 is eliminated when you are in the minors but other than that I agree with you. Rather hope someone claims him, ideally someone in the east.

DS has broken many rookies in during his time in LA and has two cups. He gave Forbort 14 games, averaging 11 minutes a game and has seen him play many times in prospect camps, training camps and in the minors. He's been given more of a chance than many other kids get to prove themselves so no, he's actually had a very fair shake and it's time for Derek Forbort to start playing up to his skill or be moved for a useable asset because after five years of development he's looking like a borderline NHLer.

The Kings are saying to Gravel and Forbort, show me what you got! Forbort with some self-doubt and lack of moxie so far, but the tools are there. Let's see what Gravel can bring. He has been playing on his off side when paired with Forbort in the AHL, so that's a plus for Gravel.

I thought it was the other way...hopefully he gets claimed so it doesn't matter.

Thanks Ehrhoff for taking a chance with the Kings... Sorry it didn't work out...

I'd much rather the time went to someone that may still be developing.

Excited to see Gravel... nothing big... just DL seeing what they got before the deadline.

Edit: Rough to get waived after a 9-2 game.

Up to 375k + league minimum salary can be put into minors without counting towards cap. Since league min is 575k this year up to 950k can be taken off.

So in Ehrhoffs case (his cap hit is 1.5mil iirc) he would still have a cap hit of 550k if he is assigned to ontario.

No he is right. Its like when we were trying duck Richards into the minors, we still would have had millions in cap hits. Infact if you got stuck with the lesser amount, that probably would have been a good option.

And for some reason 950 stands out in my head... Either way it only saves you the first 900-950K of the cost.
Lemme look.

edit: yup Holden beat me to it
What is a Buried Contract?
Teams do not receive full cap relief when a player on a one-way NHL contract is reassigned to the American Hockey League, or is loaned to a team in another professional league.

The players salary cap hit, minus the sum of the minimum NHL salary for the respective season and $375,000, still counts towards the team’s salary cap total.

The cap hit relief is therefore equal to the minimum salary of the respective season + $375,000:
2014-15: $550,000 + $375,000 = $925,000
2015-16: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
2016-17: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
2017-18: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
2018-19: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
2020-21: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000

Ehrhoff was always going to be a low risk roll, the fact is NHL teams are very rarely wrong and it was pretty telling when a guy who was a pretty good #3 d-man only a couple of years ago was only able to get $1.5 mill so late in the offseason. Oh well, he will probably be the last of Dean's former Sharks that the Kings ever bring in (maybe Marleau down the road) but for the most part all the former Sharks fizzled out wearing the crown.

As for Gravel, I am excited to see how he looks, watching him in college I always thought he was a pretty solid NHL prospect. The nice thing for Gravel is the bar has been set so low by Ehrhoff, McBain, Forbort and Schultz there isn't much pressure to step in, he would have to be pretty awful to be worse than any of those guys.

The Gravel call up is clearly a message to Forbort -- if you want it you better start showing up with a lot more desire. I like this move a lot although I will be surprised if Gravel sees much if any ice time.

And we're approximately 2/3 through the season, so his cap hit is ~1/3 * $550 = $181k if we stick him in the minors.

The bar is set by DS. How much you want to bet after he plays one game, doesn't do too bad, and DS says he's just a college boy!!! Forbort has the highest Corsi stat on the team. DS chose not to play him more games and minutes. He did take a couple penalties, but most do when they don't play much. Schenn has about as many minutes in as a King right now as Forbort and his Corsi is low. I'm an eye test guy, not Corsi, but I thought there was no reason why Forbort didn't get more minutes. I really don't think DS is thinking about going into the playoffs with Gravel, and neither is DL. This is not a rap on Gravel. He's played extremely well in Ontario, but none of that is going to matter. He will get 7 minutes tops, make a few good plays and probably a few bad ones, and all DS will dwell upon is the latter, even though one more slow footed heavy set vet we trade for will do the same thing and more. IMO.
