Fully expected they would sign him as cheap depth and veteran presence. Good for him to get a 2nd year and job security. Petry is gone, no doubt.

Let the tank ride on.

Yep. That's not a move you make when you want to compete next year. That's just a warm body taking space. I'm perfectly fine with this. Now, hopefully Price doesn't come back next season and steal any wins.

I knew it, I mentioned it in a thread as the season was winding down that I thought he would be back and I was told there is no way...well voila, cheap price and they can send him to Laval in the worst case and it won't cause any issues with the cap.

No problem with this. He's good for the tank. But he also seems like a guy that is good to have around your team.

And despite it all, he put up 27 pts in 64 GP last year (35 pts prorated for 82 games).

I always like to have a feel-good late-bloomer on the team, they generally have a great work ethic as a result of their grind to stay in the league. Generally speaking, also great guys for the room.

It seems he has a genuine relationship with Caufield and Suzuki too, which is great for their development.

Glad to see he’s back.

This is a good move. He provides some sort of pp qb ability for the young kids. Even if we are tanking, it's important that Suzuki, Caufield and all get to practice a decent PP.

Am I glad for Wideman himself. He looks like a great teammate and now he can stay in Canada near his friends and family.

At this cost, it's awesome because he was a serviceable PP specialist for the Habs. He showed great attitude in Montreal, which was a question mark since the Uber incident.

Good for him 2018-2019 to 2021 in the AHL/KHL were probably not very fun/$$$. Now he gets 1.5M and can probably do what he's best at; being a PP specialist D-men.

I was afraid there were some truth to the Letang rumors and we were going to waste cap space on the guy. Tell the french media it's over.

I'm happy for Wideman and for the Habs, especially looking at that cheap contract.

Now, we trade Petry and sign a defenseman for approximately half of what Petry makes. We don't have enough bodies on D yet.

Happy for Wideman.

It's a pretty solid move for the Habs, having Wideman gives the young guys room to grow into their roles instead of being rushed because there's no one better and if they surprise and become ready earlier then expected having Wideman as 7th Dman or even in the AHL is perfectly fine.

1 year too much even at that salary , but who cares hes bad enough to get us a chance for Bedard which should be our goal.

We don't have salary cap at all neither , scratch all you can.

Also Petry is a goner with him signed.

So far, our vet depth chart:

Edmundson Petry
Romanov Savard
Schuneman Wideman

I think Harris is definitely ready. But Hughes said he wants to have vets in place in order to ensure the rookies (Harris, Barron, Guhle, etc...) aren't rushed. I still think if Petry is traded, we sign another vet RHD.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see MSL go with:

Edmundson Barron
Romanov Savard
Guhle Harris
Wideman, Schuneman

At worst, he gets sent to Laval or traded to another team. I don't see why the 2nd year is bad. Probably helped lower the AAV by 50-100k or so.

Rookies are prone to hit a massive wall at some point, so I think Wideman serves as an insurance policy in case one of the young guys looks like he is actually regressing and needs to be taken out of the lineup.
