Also he likely would have waited to hit the open market if we didn't give him the second year. Many teams need a depth dman who shoots right. At worst, he gets sent to Laval or traded to another team. I don't see why the 2nd year is bad. Probably helped lower the AAV by 50-100k or so.
I like Schueneman and think he has potential to be a regular NHLer but it seems a stretch to call him a vet considering he has a grand total of 24 NHL games to his name.So far, our vet depth chart:
Edmundson Petry
Romanov Savard
Schuneman Wideman
I think Harris is definitely ready. But Hughes said he wants to have vets in place in order to ensure the rookies (Harris, Barron, Guhle, etc...) aren't rushed. I still think if Petry is traded, we sign another vet RHD.
I still wouldn't be surprised to see MSL go with:
Edmundson Barron
Romanov Savard
Guhle Harris
Wideman, Schuneman
There's always this assumption that because we signed a guy they will be a regular and it's not true. Wideman is more then likely the 7th D (Who will play 50-60 games because of injuries), there's no risk involved because if he can't handle that role he can be scratched or sent down with no cap consequences. At worst, he gets sent to Laval or traded to another team. I don't see why the 2nd year is bad. Probably helped lower the AAV by 50-100k or so.
Romanov should be playing with Harris. Romanov is not a rookie anymore , he's a young vet with playoffs experience also. Savard with Guhle would make more sense. So far, our vet depth chart:
Edmundson Petry
Romanov Savard
Schuneman Wideman

Will be interesting to see how many points he can get in a full season.Worth noting, after MSL took over Wideman finished just outside the top 30 for points by D during that time with 17 points in 32 games.
For under a million a year, it is a very solid deal for the team.
I'm not a big fan of Schueneman. In this case I consider a vet any player that we don't have to worry about burning out (i.e. throwing to the Wolves) because they're too young and green. If Schueneman can play a regular NHL shift now, when will he ever be able to?I like Schueneman and think he has potential to be a regular NHLer but it seems a stretch to call him a vet considering he has a grand total of 24 NHL games to his name.
Bergevin had a tough time, operating the habs while in Montreal...........no way he could do it from out there!!Is Bergevin operating the Habs from Los Angeles?
keep an eye on Wideman being flipped for two 2nd rd picks at the 2024 deadline
Exactly, it's a nothing move. There is nothing good or solid about this move. It's a nothing move , just a depth guy to have on a roster as a 7/8 D. But hey if you have to go outside the organisation to replace Wideman you might aswell keep him . At least they already know him and they know what he can bring... as for bringing someone else from the outside , you dont always know what you will get.
And if he gets sent to Laval the whole cap hit goes with him. The 2nd year is fine, maybe it gets the deal done vs trying to offer 1 year at roughly the same dollars where Wideman might try his luck on the open market. At worst, he gets sent to Laval or traded to another team. I don't see why the 2nd year is bad. Probably helped lower the AAV by 50-100k or so.
